What do you wear when you shop in #&$^hole counties?

Unless the weather is too warm I typically wear an armored motorcycle jacket everywhere, mostly for fashion purposes, but it could stop a small knife if needed.

Hartford, CT, eh? Instead of shopping you could get some free tickets and go see the Maury or Steve Wilkos show! Maur-ry! Maur-ry!

What you said made so sense but I applaud your effort.

Reading comprehension is hard.

Dave - there are some things that are beneficial to post on a public forum and some things that one should either keep to yourself OR better yet, post in a positive manner, not something derogative. I don't know anything about where you live, but I am sure I could find something derogative to say. I choose not to stoop to that level. The same goes for the people in that area. There are good and bad in every area, but lets not digress to that discussion. Rather than posting the negative and still asking the question, might you ask "what do you wear in a high crime area? This focuses on statistics. Your header negatively focused on people charistics. It's just me. I try to present everything in a positive light, even problems, hoping more people will imitate the positive and not the negative.

The term "high crime" does not shield one. The term xhole, skews one towards negativity. The first describes the area the shopper is going into. The second attacks the peole in the area that the shopper is going into.

I think it's the other way around.

I guess I'd consider a high crime area an *&^%hole area. Yes, good and bad in any neighborhood, but the balance is heavily weighted in one direction or another in some. The comparison of Hartford zip codes (https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ct/hartford/crime) is interesting.

People who commit violent crimes have *&(^hole mentalities. Crimes don't happen by themselves.

This entire discussion is pointless. You will always have hypersensitive people, and people who tell it as they see it. Neither will bend.

I had the pleasant experience of shopping the Bridgeport to Port Jefferson ferry one time. It was great fun.

Liamgrey. I was dressed appropriately today in a semi-high end furniture store 2 weeks ago. All the other shoppers were casually dressed as well as it was a Sunday afternoon. An older male staff ignored me and greeted a couple further away with an engaging and friendly offer of assistance. Would you write that up? I felt slighted, but I don't think it had anything I was wearing. It was a rather nice coat.
My take away from this post is ugly, unAmerican term used by POTUS: " **&&&^ hole countries" . There ARE no "&^^%% hole countries!!!!! What an ugly, unGodly concept: There ARE poor countries, corrupt countries, troubled countries, disadvantaged countries, colonized countries, war torn countries, polluted countries, countries lead by the inept and corrupt-- but last I looked I never saw the word "**&& hole" country" on a map!!! Such "nice talk" from a purported Christian POTUS. Off my soapbox now. Almost.

Saying your are just "calling it like it is" and others are just being too "senstive" is a way to cover an ugly attitude or at least dismissive attitude about a part of humanity PEOPLE live in "&&^^ countries"

This level of hypersensitivity is why the right calls the left snowflakes.
There's a big difference between some random dude on a message board referring to any place as a $-hole and the president, who supposedly represents us all, doing the same. I urge you, if you are offended by the OP's word choice, to not vote for him for president.
Nobody cares that you are offended (Where have I seen that before??).
If this thread isn't shut down completely by the end of the day I'll be shocked.

ShopperFun - Maybe the other couple were older and seemingly more serious. If you are young and single, he may have thought you were more likely to be speculating. And since you said the salesman was an older male. FWIW, I'm 53 and I dress more casually now than when I was younger, especially with hair and makeup!

The situation you encountered might be worth noting if you were there before the couple entered the store.
I think he said counties, not countries. And what he means by that is not clear. High crime? Unfriendly? Rude? Who's guess? If it were the former, I would not volunteer to go there, or I would wear a gun strapped to my hip and a pepper spray canister on my wrist or key chain. I'd probably wear a Go Pro or a PV500 to get it all on streaming video to the cloud.

If it were the latter, I'd wear a smile and an attitude that says, "I'm having a great day no matter what you're doing."

I am yet to see any location with retail establishments in any city where I would not venture during daylight hours. Some areas are poorer than others, but the folks are good folks. As mentioned above all of these "terrible" places are homes to a lot of people.

I would answer. However, I have no idea what he was referring to, and I don't know how crime made it into the picture. Let him tell us what he means by his use of the term rather than offer speculation and conjecture in the dark. I don't see where he said what he meant by the term at all. Why assume he meant high-crime area?

And if by chance he did, it's not a projection or skew to call it what it is. Crimes are commonly mapped by zip code and you can access the Criminal Justice Database, (DOJ) or your local crime maps to see where the hot spots are. They are shown in red and yellow zones and listed by category and date. They list whether it was alcohol, drug, violent, burglary, prostitution, underage tobacco, adult, child, elder abuse, neglect, and so on. It's fact, not skew. If that is what he meant, it may explain the attitudes in the county. Law enforcement gets tough when crimes become prevalent in an area, and understandably, residents would be guarded and less friendly when big bad wolves or tweedle-dumb and tweedle-dumber are prowling around looking for their next victim.

I think the question is, 'What did you mean by that?"

No, I think s...hole describes it quite nicely. It doesn't offend me but then I have not been accused of being politically correct.
to ShopperFun99: Of course, I would write that up as it was an event that you experienced during your shop. "As I was browsing the main aisle of the dining rooms department for the tenth minute, a salesperson walked past me to initiate conversation with another customer who had just arrived to the area." No mention of clothes, but a mention of the length of time that a salesperson had not approached me, and a direct observation without an opinion.

The county I grew up in is in the top 5 in the US for being poorest... I read something recently that said 60% of the lived in buildings meet condemning criteria by national standards and that 66% are piping their sewage straight into creeks and rivers.

I've read different stats on assistance. Some numbers say it's in the 60's and others say as much as 80% of the county receives some type of assistance in some form or another...SNAP, TANF, Welfare, Disability/SSI, medicaid, and so on.

I wear jeans and tanks or t-shirts when I go home and do shops. Most of those shops hit bonus money of $50 -$100+ for the usual $5-$10 type shops although the shops are sparse. Still, makes a nice little boost when I go see my grandparents and folks.
