Which shopping scenario do you deserve an Academy Award for?

I did a Big and Tall shop 2006ish. I told the salesman that I was shopping for my brother and went on and on about his size etc. After we left, my husband said "I did not know that you had a brother" My reply was "I don't"

Once upon a time doing an upscale retail in Beverly Hills, I played the part and said I needed clothes as I was taking a trip to Europe for 3 months. I played the part, and enjoyed it...leaving without buying anything was a bit awkward....

Portraying my Nissan as my daughter/son's car because mine is an Acura/Lexus/Porsche/Infiniti/Mercedes/BMW. The scenario should warrant two Oscars since I have none of the above.

Like Irene I did a Beverly Hills handbag that costs $5,000. Although I stuck to the truth for part of it...my brother really does have an apartment in Paris (and a french wife), my daughter was not getting married anywhere let alone in Europe for which I was shopping for a new bag as mother of the bride. And the lowly Coach bag I was using as "my everyday bag" I purchased at a thrift shop for $35 but of course I did not mention that.
Great idea! I might have to borrow it.

Whenever I do an Assisted/Independent living shop I trot out my good-for-nothing brother who can't be bothered to help me decide where mom wants to live. And then when they follow up I'm AMAZED that he actually decided to have Mom come live with him.

Kathy, it works so well since there are so many Nissan dealers near the others. "Mom" is taking the car for service because "I paid for it and somebody has to take care of it," which is followed by a big eye roll. It usually elicits a chuckle and knowing nod from the sales associate.

I could get "Best Actress in a Mini-Series" for all my repeating performances in wireless shops... "I'm looking again" and when the same rep shows up at a different location... "I moved"... I can't think of a single "Oscar moment" it just seems that I am trying to do my best and become whatever I need to be for the "starring role" of the day hehe.

I literally bought my son a $25,000 watch for his high school graduation. I was quite proud of his acceptance into USC's film school. Such a good kid. I did this 10 times at different stores. I got a lot of credit card perks that year.

In reality, he was in 8th grade that year. Even better, when he graduated, he asked if I had bought him a watch.

I am going to call my mom during her break to ask what she is sending in this box. She is a teacher, so I can't call her.
Sort of true. She was a teacher. She died in 2003. I probably won't be calling her...

Did a fitness shop. Asked the usual questions about membership, type of fitness goals, equipment at one location. Was scheduled to do another in another city. Oops- had the same associate from the first shop. Explained that I was looking at which location I would prefer going to on a regular basis.
When I was a brand new shopper, I had to call a furniture store and then go visit the store. I was scared they would recognize my voice when I entered the store, so when I did my phone call, I grabbed my throat and pressed hard on my vocal cord so that I sounded like an 80 year old woman. tongue sticking out smiley I used a strong southern accent and they had to have me repeat what I was saying because they had a hard time understanding what I was saying. When I got to the store, the salesman said, "Did you call the store?" sad smiley I interpreted that as he recognized my voice but he was just asking a generic question. smiling smiley
I can't give different names to the Best Buy I seem to be working at. weekly, and since I have evaluated everything, they know my face, and one remembered my name. I say I'm looking for computer , laser, camera (doing the leg work) for my two college grandkids who don't have time. I have bought my own stuff there through the years, so feel comfortable, and have a rewards card...anything I say, just goes in one ear and out the other.
They see me as a good customer, and it helps having bought so much from them through the years.
Today is office suppiie's right next door.....will use same senerio.

Last month I was doing an apartment shop at a certain location. Last night, my twin brother shopped the same random associate at a different location.

In January, I was purchasing a $2M home, which I could easily afford as I was a very successful financial adviser. When the agent said that she was looking to reorganize her finances and make retirement plans, she asked if I was taking new clients. I said that I was not as I already had a full schedule. She then asked for a reference for somebody in the industry. I recommended a financial adviser I had shopped recently for a different MSC.

Hard work builds character and homework is good for your soul.
Why would a single woman in her 60s buy a home with 5 bedrooms (including 2 master suites), a three car garage and a nanny suite over the garage? Simple: I am so proud that my daughter has been awarded a grant to spend two Antarctic summers (winters here) doing research there. While she is gone, her sons, ages 12 and 14 will be living with me, and will stay here through high school so that they do not have to move during that time. I will use the main level master suite and when my daughter is here for the (local) summers, she will have the second floor mater suite. As a senior analyst for (some big international organization) I often travel so there will be a nanny who can keep everything in order, oversee homework and, when necessary, provide transportation to sports and social events for the boys. The sales agent for that roughly $3 million home exclaimed, "How wonderful. Like my mother-in-law, you are part of a whole new demographic that is co-parenting their grand children." I liked her way of putting that so much that I used it to "introduce" this persona when I used it all up and down the I-95 corridor over a 3 year period. For my daughter, I used the name of the mother of my godsons and used the godsons for the names and interests of my "grandsons."

Doing two banks in classy neighborhoods tomorrow, but Wales story is too involved, so, being my age and wanting to buy a 2 million or so dollar house, will go something like this: I am selling my beautiful condo, which is paid for, as my daughter is getting divorced and needs help with her children. She will be moving back in with me and selling her home as well. I will take care of my grandkids, and we definitely need more room, as I'd like an in-law space in the back, needing privacy and i have looked at models being built with in-law space.

I'm sure in the L.A. area two millions dollars doesn't go very far :-)

Nope, but you can get a nice home in some subs for 2 million, just not in the city....my town has beautiful 5 bedrooms for a couple mill, even under. I did a new home development near me that start at 800,000 and you practically build it yourself, picking the lot, floors, landscaping and all which adds up. They have solar heating which keeps bills low and excellent schools but have mellow roos, which is about 500.00 monthly and goes to the school district. Location is what determines price, of course living far away from the city always gets more value for the money.

I recently did a college housing shop on the campus of a well-known university where I was looking to be the co-signer on the lease for my daughter (a transfer from another school), along with two of her local friends that just happened to be current students. The thing that the leasing office didn't know at the time was that my daughter is 15-months old, and her two friends are both currently 14 & 15-months old as well. One of the objections that I gave to the assistant manager was that the room could only fit a queen-sized bed, when in reality, my daughter is still in her crib.

I was just apartment shopping for her 17 years early.

Luxury watch shops. I'm shopping alone trying to pick out a watch for my boyfriend to buy me for my birthday. Boyfriend is older and works in finance and owns many of these watches himself but this will be my first. Hence why a semi-clueless young lady in Louboutin shoes but not wearing an expensive watch or other expensive jewelry would be browsing for $5-15k watches.
I am really enjoying reading these! Keep them coming! grinning smiley

Well let's see now. How about a back story for why I arrived to shop for a $120,000 Porsche Cayenne, driving a PT Cruiser? You see, my late husband and I bought a large RV and were about to retire and live in it while traveling North America. When he became ill he made me promise that, somehow, I would carry out the travel dream. I have sold the RV, and want to buy a Cayenne so that I can travel alone, in comfort and safety, staying at hotels instead of RV camping. I will need to carry a 4 season wardrobe with me, since I really will be living full time on the road until I discover where I might want to buy a condo with a view!

No, I will not trade in the Cruiser. That was going to be what we towed behind the RV. I will give that to my daughter.

I have several variations on that story and hit about 14 Porsche dealers all over the Northeast,e Mid-Atlantic and Mid-Southeastern US without any one thinking it at all odd. Brought a tear to some SAs' eyes, I must say.

During my one and only Porsche shop (for a used car) I told the associate I was going to partner with a friend who bought and sold antiques in her spare time...in between our charity luncheons and volunteer activities. I volunteered to be her delivery person. My husband wouldn't think of me driving anything that wasn't luxury, so that's why the Cayenne on the lot was perfect.

Amazingly enough, when the associate followed up I explained that my friend had decided to loan me one of her extra vehicles for a while.

Did a $2M home shop as well. After telling the SA that I have my own business (I was divorced with two kids and looked 30), I looked at her and said, "Divorce settlement" with a wink.
I don't know about an academy award, but I certainly deserve something for putting up with my non-existent wife who so tightly clutches the purse strings that "I just can't buy anything until she has a chance to come in with me when we both have an off day and take a look at what I'd like to get." Smartphones, furniture rentals, DirectTV service, cars....I just can't make any decision until I run it by her first.

And amazingly, only one salesperson has pulled the "be a man and make a decision for yourself" card. He was kind of a jerk anyway, though.
I did a dealership and said I'm having a mid-life crisis, so instead of going to Fiji and finding a gorgeous beach boy, I'll settle for a Porsche, wouldn't you......my ex has one, why shouldn't I, the salesman laughed.

I often feel like I put on an Oscar-worthy display. My favorite has to be "my better half finally said I could paint the kitchen any color I want, as long as it's green. Can you recommend a green that won't make me feel like a Christmas tree?" (I'm a redhead.)
You all are cracking me up! My story is so lame by comparison. My best acting job was when I did my first non-bank and non-restaurant shop. I had to shop a welding supply store. So... what was a 50+ year-old woman doing looking for welding equipment? Well, my son, who was in high school, was very artsy and had gotten into welding in industrial arts class and wanted to set up a shop for himself at home so he could create sculptures. So I was shopping for a portable welding unit, helmet, etc., for him for Christmas.

The only thing that was true was that I had a son in high school and he is artsy. But he doesn't know which end of a hammer to use, let alone a welder. Good thing I knew a little about welding equipment, having worked for an industrial supply house eons ago. And I mean a "little bit." The salesperson actually bought my shtick. I think. smiling smiley
