Audits

I'm currently in the midst of doing some revealed audits and am curious to know anyone's thoughts on this type of shop. Do you like them, and what do you think is fair pay?

I'd previously done two price audits, both covert. One was okay, but the other was an absolute nightmare!

It depends so very much on the type of shop and what shape the location is in. I did a quick reveal today that was more of a shop than an audit. It wasn't bad because the guy did an excellent job and took the reveal quite well. I do some gas station reveals and they almost always go smoothly. I have been less comfortable doing rewards shops where there is a reveal whether they win or lose. Although there are appropriate ways of stating that they failed miserably on common courtesy, I always figure that through the nice, upbeat words they know that is what I am saying. Where it is a straightforward reveal (you call ahead and make an appointment) I am absolutely comfortable with it.

The main thing I am cautious about is that I will not do a reveal in a location I mystery shop. While I think only Maritz has come out and banned shoppers from sites where they have previously done a reveal, I personally won't do it even if I am not forbidden to do so. Down the road if I see staff changes that would make me not be recognized as the shopper I am likely to mystery shop a location again after having done a reveal, but some locations I did a reveal 5 years ago still have the same personnel. This boils down to pure economics. 1 reveal at even $25 is not worth eliminating future shops at the location.
This store is not mystery shopped, so no risk of blowing a future opportunity. The best way to describe the type of audit is inventory, although it's not exactly that. I'd estimate that it takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
If it works for you, go for it!

I see some pass by that would work for me if they were with a different company. The pay is not bad but last job the check never came and they claimed it was sent and although they could see it was not cashed, they wouldn't do a stop payment. I asked again for payment once the check would have expired by date and they told me they would 'take care of it'. Unfortunately taking care of it did not result in payment.

Life is too short for that kind of nonsense for $15 to $20.
Ah, but you think that $15-$20 is okay, if the company is good and pays on time? This is an unusual situation, with a certain amount of guaranteed work every month.
The 'surprise' reveals, I don't do. The announced reveals, or audits, are fine with me. Fair pay? $12 and up, depending on what's involved. The question and answer reports are easy.

45-60 minutes, for the "inventory" audit, $20 minimum, unless there are issues, then the fee needs upped in proportion to the issues. But, when you say "guaranteed" work, perhaps you are moving into merchandising, and I wouldn't know the going rate.

Are we in the ballpark, nicelytwicely?

It totally depends on whether you are comfortable with it. You are indicating you feel you can perform the job in 45-60 minutes. I assume that is your 'on site' time. Can you work it in with other jobs in that area or are you likely to have to make a special trip? Do you have any idea of how long it is likely to take to do the report? If it becomes a routine job, is the time flexible or fixed? I have an excellently paying job every Monday morning between 9AM and 11AM. If it didn't pay well I would not make the commitment long term. I would be willing to do it for less money if it was a 2 hour slot of my choice during each week. But what you are talking about falls, it seems, more in the category of merchandising and that I haven't bothered with.
Flexible times in all respects (date and hour). The store knows they're being performed, so the only surprise is when someone will show up! It's the audit that takes time. The report itself is very easy, really just transcribing the findings onto the form. It's not merchandising, I just report what I see.

$20 is in the ballpark, yes. There's also a small reimbursement, so it brings the fee up closer to $30. However, even though I'm always going to be buying something I can use, it's not necessarily going to be something I NEED. So, I really view the shop as being closer to $20. And I wonder if it's really worth it. In short, I really don't know what the going rate for an audit is, so this information is helpful. Thanks!

The only "going rate" is the one with which you are satisfied. I have done car dealerships where the pay is $25 and others where it is $150. Both require roughly the same amount of work. I am satisfied with the going rate of both, despite the discrepancy in pay.

I suspect, that you are not satisfied, hence your seeking of affirmation. If you feel your time and effort can be better spent and/or rewarded, you have your answer.
lame1, what you say is true of all shops. However, I was/am trying to obtain a basis for comparison as part of my "is it worth it equation".
All my experiences with audits have been okay. I've been paid anywhere from $20-$70, depending on the level of involvement. I did have one audit where the manager was actually insulted that he was being audited--and I was really nervous to do the shop because he sounded irate over the phone, but when I got to the audit, he actually was pretty friendly.

Has anyone gotten the message from Gapbuster for the electronic store audits? They pay $130 per audit, but you have to pay for your own drug test and background check--which winds up being like $60. Has anyone ever done those audits?

Didn't GFK previously have those? IIRC, they were very time consuming and consisted of an inordinate amount of data entry.
Unless those shops are moving from GFK to Gapbuster (and they are still actively advertised by GFK) she needs to check again. GFK reimburses for the drug test and background test after the first successful audit performed. Naturally if you don't pass the tests you won't do a single audit, so there would be a chance it would be out of your own pocket. Good reason not to go for the testing if you don't think your background or drug test would pass.
Yes, you were both correct, it was GFK. I got the G right, at least. Lol.
And Flash, obviously it would be silly of me to pay for my own drug test if I knew I wasn't clean. I was just wondering if they were worth the investment. I think Lame1 answered my question pretty aptly--that they require a ton of data entry--though even if it takes up an entire day, $130 in one day isn't too shabby...
GFK paid for mine upfront. If I failed, there would have been a charge back...winking smiley

Shopping Bama and parts of Georgia.
I'm still learning 24/7.
I think I *know* these audits. I took four of them, the first went haywire - since they were out of a lot of items. I got lucky on the last three, they were fully stocked and the items numbers seemed to match up on the audit sheets, so I didn't have to write them down each time and I knew where to look.
I'd pick them up again, and the people that I worked with were very nice.
Easy peasy 15 bucks and most locations were close to me.

To which audit are you referring? The one I started the thread about, or something mentioned further down?
