Only shoppers eat tofu

From the guidelines of a shop for a small chain of Boston-area fast casual eateries: "**Please do not order tofu items unless you are actually a vegetarian. It is not an item that is ordered often and will give you away as a shopper and invalidate your shop."

Is it a flat-rate pay shop where tofu is less expensive? Definitely is sometimes a giveaway when someone orders the least expensive items.

It is a flat-pay shop although I don't think the tofu (which is quite good) is priced differently from the meat. However the name of the chain includes a meat ingredient, which might explain why they don't get too many vegetarians in the door.
Excuse me MSC but my ethnicity is chinese. I was raised on eating tofu since alot of chinese dishes contained tofu.
I am also of Chinese/Taiwanese ethnicity. I eat solid blocks of fresh tofu with oyster sauce for them protein gains. I also eat meat.

If tofu is done right, it's every bit as good as meat! Well.... Almost. winking smiley But I remember the sofritas Chipotle served (still do?). Awful.

I learn something new every day, but not everyday!
I've learned to never trust spell-check or my phone's auto-fill feature.
I had a hotel MSC tell me adamantly that only shoppers order rum and coke at tropical resorts.
Ummm....

Seriously, nobody cares that you're offended.
I eat tofu all the time. If you order it at this restaurant how is the MSC going to determine whether or not you're *entitled* to it?

I love tofu too but only if the chef knows what they are doing. I have had dishes of basically raw tofu with some thick sauce poured over it and put between pieces of bread.
The issue I think is mostly the reimbursement levels and fees on some restaurant mystery shops. If I go to a Steak and Fish restaurant and every time I eat there all I ever order is the one cheaper pasta or chicken dish because after paying for a drink or two, an appetizer or dessert etc there is no money left in the mystery shop budget for the signature dishes of that type of restaurant. If they truly want us to evaluate them they would either give us enuf dough to order bread (many places charge for bread but this is just a play on words I could not resist) or to afford the average bill there. Then we may not be discovered by always ordering the cheapest thing. I have heard several times that msc and clients give us the average amt two people would spend. But that is only if they forget that we are tasked to order so many little other things for big prices that add up like $12 drinks and $8-10 desserts and $14 appetizers.
I’ve done a nice steakhouse where they encouraged us to order their new seasonal items. Tofu was on the list and it was the most appealing to me. Why have items on a menu of “no one but shoppers” order it?! That’s a bit ridiculous!

Doing what I can to enhance the life of my family! I LOVE what I do smiling smiley
It makes more sense to order a tofu dish as a location not attractive to vegetarians if you are also ordering a meat dish. I dragged my vegan GF to hundreds of dinners....and she was fine, as long as there was something on the menu she could order.

That said, perhaps we are the ones who set the "Mystery Shoppers order tofu" assumption....
There are so may younger folks that are Vegan' and eat tofu is....we also have many Vegeteraian restaurants...this company needs to get with the times.

Probably not their main demographic.

Also there's the joke:

How can you tell if a person has run a marathon?
Oh don't worry, they'll definitely tell you.

I'm sure it will be a marathon in the telling as well.

Which two?

Hey, did you read that you can now enter the Boston Marathon in the women's division? You don't have to prove anything, just check the box for female gender. For men who will never qualify under the men's timing, they can get an extra half hour by claiming they're women.

Oh hell no. I have major authority issues there's no way I would survive 12 hours. One does not have to be in the Marines to run their marathon, although Marines do get to sign up for it before it's open to the public.

Interestingly enough it has also gotten me out of a ticket once! I got pulled over, and I swear I think he pinged someone going in the opposite direction. He said I was doing 70something in a 60 and I know I had set my cruise control on 64 when the speed limit changed about 2 miles before. Anyway, he goes back to the patrol car to run my license and when he returns he mentions my 26.2 sticker and asks if I had run a marathon. So of course I told him all about running the Marine Corp Marathon blah blah blah. And he lets me off with a warning!

Not tofu but I just heard a story on the radio in an interview with the CEO of White Castle. Now I live on the west coast with no White Castles but I grew up in the east where they were one of the original burger joints. And now they are adding an "Impossible" burger to their menu. This is a vegan and vegetarian breakthrough for a fast food place esp one like White Castle to offer a real meal for vegetarians rather than a side of boiled veggies and call it a meal. ...Unfortunately word does have to get out to those who prefer not to eat meat that there are such choices at some of these restaurants or they will just not go. Evidently the White Castle CEO is fully behind this move and putting advertising dollars into the decision. Years ago Burger King had a veggie burger but they did not have it on the menu. You had to know to order it. It was around for a few months and then they cancelled it. I bet very few people ordered it because they had no idea it was there. If you build it, and you advertise it, they will come. And maybe sometime in the future tofu options will be more acceptable on menus.
We have a few White Castles left here...what a horrible, dirty place. All of them. Undoubtedly it wasn't menu variety that made the ones in my area go under, it was nasty food cooked in nasty kitchens.
I just got back from our Sprouts, a healthy indoor Farmers market from AZ., and almost everything is non-gmo, and so many choices for Vegan's. Their meat is also grass-fed and they have many choices for folks (like me) that are lactose intolerant, but the prices are high, 5/7$ for a pint of ice cream.....ouch!! Never been to White Castle, not on the West coast, not sure if these healthy Vegan's would choose it for a meal. They don't want food cooked on the same grill as meat.
