Brookstone is (was?) one of my favorite places to get weird doo-dads. Like the USB cable/bottle opener I bought for my computer geek son on my last shop.

Not surprising. There are just not enough people who want to buy the trinkets and overpriced items they market. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of their revenue came from the petty purchases that MSers were required to make. In all many many visits, I never saw anyone else purchase anything. Perhaps they were surviving off online sales.
They did have some great stuff for people who are hard to buy for. Maybe they will just go to online sales. I bought a water-resistant remote speaker from there about 15 years ago that still works great.
I just did a shop there on 7/29 and customers' were definitely buying. When I entered the store both of the employees were ringing up sales. I had to wait in line to make my purchase. I suppose it depends on the mall. The one near my house is upscale and people have money to spend. Many customers wanted to try out the massage chairs, but I doubt they sell many of those.
Yup, mall shopping is not what it used to be. Brookstone is like what Sharper Image used to be. It's sad to see many malls declining. There is one mall, the Hilltop Mall in Richmond, that has really declined in recent years. I had commented to my son that back in its day this particular mall was crowded. Now, since that merry weed has been legalized in CA, that's all you can smell in that mall's parking lot.

It's a huge YMMV when it comes to shopping malls. The shopping malls in Denver marketed towards the middle class to the wealthy are PACKED and any store closures are immediately occupied by a new client. Otherwise, the working class to lower middle class malls are suffering bad and tend to be dead malls sad smiley.

I am sad to see the 2 Brookstones in my area closing. There's still the ones at the airport, but still.

Shopping the Greater Denver Area, Colorado Springs and in-between in Colorado. 33 year old male and willing to travel!
The one near me closed earlier this year and it is in a decent area. I didn't see many customers in the store. I did see customers sitting in their massaging chairs though. Unfortunately I think that's the trend for the future now where many of the stores are going to close that are in the mall.
