Do you count "study time" in your hourly wages?

The thread I thought she was referring to was about Marketforce and she was JGS there. But she might very well be spicy and putting us on, who knows but how sucky if so...why would anyone want so desperately to be part of a forum where mods and/or the owner gave them the boot? I wouldn't.

Ah. So you ARE Spicy. Welcome back Spicegirl.

Actually if you read her post earlier in the thread she references going to bat for johnb in the discussion we were talking about and their reply to her. That conversation was as spicy. She basically just admitted to being spicy. So yes, it is her.

It seems to me she was fairly transparent about being the same person. As she has replied in this thread and not denied it I can only assume it's true.

I just signed up for 5 of the same shop. The prep/study time for the first one was about 30 minutes and then I read over them again and created a checklist in my phone then texted it to myself so that I can look at it as though I’m looking at a text. The prep time can be divided up amongst the number of shops, and from what I understand, these shops can be done again next month. I’m going to say the prep time on this is well worth the shops.

I dont include prep time. I want to be a good shopper so I prep out the wazoo.
If JGS was spicy wouldnt she know better than to stick up for johnb? I think she would.

When I did airport shops (I have probably done 1000), I created a template on my notepad. Then I cut and pasted the template to new notes. Concession 1, Concession 2 etc. Then when I got to the concession, I changed the # to the name and just filled in the blanks.
That is an excellent idea!!

Just catching up on this thread after being away for awhile.

I'm not sure why or how anyone took the OP's question to mean that she wanted to know about asking for more money to do a shop because of the prep time. To me, it seemed clear that she was simply asking about factoring it into the shop pay when deciding if a shop is worth it or not. I thought it was a good question for a relatively new shopper to be asking. It's crazy to do a $12 or $15 shop, especially if you think you won't be doing many more of the same shop, if, for example, you have to spend 1/2 hour reading guidelines and surveys, 1/2 hour physically performing the shop, and 1/2 hour doing the report. If you only think of the time spent doing and reporting the shop, that fee may not sound so bad to some folks. But if you've never done it before and need that 1/2 hour of prep time AND it's a shop with a long rotation or one that just doesn't come around very often, that makes the shop pretty low on profit. Especially if you have to drive more than 5 minutes to get to it. smiling smiley

but don't ever create any threads of your own also.

I've read this same type of comment on several threads. I don't understand why credibility would be tied to creating threads. By the time I joined this forum I had been mystery shopping for over three years and video shopping for one or more. It seems I have created several threads in General Chat, but if I have created any in other areas they were few and far between. After this long I rarely need to ask questions about the business or shops. If I do have a question I ask on an existing thread.

Of course you should include prep time. In the end, you consider the complexity of the shop and if you can skim over your guidelines and still successfully complete it. At the same time, as someone else mentioned, you consider if this is a repeatable project. In other words, the more times you do it, hopefully you become more and more efficient at it improving your hourly rate.

In my freelance business, I often have to do research before writing something. That time has to be billed to the client, not just the time from when I sit down and start typing! Otherwise I'd be short changing myself tremendously.

Yup; I hear you. I once had a very good client of mine ask why it cost him so much to have me write a half-page product description or a small ad or a three-panel brochure. I explained EXACTLY what I had to do in order to produce that copy and that inputting the words was the least time-consuming task in the entire process. I think I told him that I don't sit down at my computer and receive divine inspiration so that I could just start writing. He got it and never questioned my billing again. I was already giving him preferred rates because he was a steady client. He'd have had a cardiac arrest if I'd charged him industry-standard rates!
