what do you do with your shop purchases?

I first usually do not take on work that i cannot use the purchases. I use those i cannot use as gifts or donations, but i don't claim them for taxes. Never return them or it would compromise your future work.

The Best Buy shops require purchasing something for a dollar...good luck, as a coke is 1.89+tax, and I refuse to buy candy which is up to 2.50. I have done many of these shops, they are close to me, I've learned a lot, however, standing in line and spending any $$ of my own is a bummer. Taking a photo of the outside gives them the address, do they really need the receipt to show which store you were at....

Irene, yes, unfortunately because people cheat and lie about shops. I had a scheduler tell me that some shoppers don't complete the shops at all, just take photos off the internet. So the receipt is "back up" proof, as is a Geoverify code, names and descriptions, and detailed timings, so the client can pull the security tapes and check on you.

I did a big box store last month, and got ONE question back from the scheduler/editor: Did you do this shop alone?

Well, of course I did. But I'm one of those people who are not very good at standing in line, and I DID chat with people in line with me. And sitting in my car, waiting to return my purchase, a couple came out of the store and I struck up a rather long conversation with them. They were parked beside me, in a car identical to mine (same make, model, year, color, etc. -- 20 year old Buicks!). We had a long chat about, of all things, our cars! We both have 300,000 miles on our cars. The couple, a man and a woman, were about my age, and had bought their car new. I explained all that in my reply to the scheduler. I'm sure it could very well have looked like I was with one of the people I chatted with in line.
I was complaining about the cost of the purchase, why don't they reimburse the full amount...can't Best Buy afford coughing up another dollar?

Remember, if the item is reimbursed and you keep the item for personal use or sale (as opposed to discarding or donating it) the reimbursement is taxable income.

Well, not according to the MSC: "1099 earnings include Shop Fees and sweepstakes prizes. 1099s do NOT include travel, reimbursement, or special fees."

Just because something is not reported as income does not mean that it is not income.

I have three boys, a daughter and a husband. I can usually find something that at least one of us needs.

If not, and I have to buy "bangles and baubles..." a bracelet or some such, I will think of who would like it and use it as a "gift topper" to make the gift seem more expensive, beautiful, whatever...

Which is why we, as Independent Contractors, have the responsibility for keeping exquisitely detailed records.
I always keep in mind that I have to pay taxes also on all items I purchase and keep for free. You aren't allowed to return the item for any I shop. I keep a gift box where I put all items I get and try to gift them.

If the purchase is required in order to complete the assignment, the reimbursement is NOT taxable income.
