Barneys New York - I now own a pair of cashmere socks!

I fit the 18-34 demographic and self-assigned a $100.00 reimbursement plus $30.00 bonus assignment. $138.00 total shop

After having to purchase an accessory for my girlfriend as a guise, I purchased and now own a pair of cashmere socks. It was the least expensive item in the department I was assigned.

You can bet I’m going to make sure I don’t loose them when I throw them in the wash. Or do they warrant gently hand washing?

NICE!

Handwash and no dryer.

So the reimburse was 100, why go for the socks? I would go for the most expensive item just under 100....or maybe in that store that is the socks? LOL Anyway, glad you enjoyed it.

It's very hard to find an item that just cost $100 at Barney's. The cashmere socks are a good idea. I would love a pair.

Uh, that/those were the socks. Really.

Just for clarification, the socks were $103.00, exclusive of sales tax; least expensive item at Barneys’ accessory department with the exception of a Barneys branded sun visor.
Just....wow.....that is 51.50 a sock.....just....I can't even.

I foolishly grabbed one of these when the department to be shopped was Women's fashion, which meant I could only buy from there, no accessories, no shoes, no housewares. I ended up buying a sweater for my sister that was $160, and just considered the reimbursement and fee to be a discount. It was actually a fun assignment. The young man who helped me was hilarious.
I'm glad they have a shopping program. Do they treat customers any better? I left there and went to Saks, and was treated exactly the same at Saks -- a piercing stare down that aristocratic nose that implied I should be in J C Penny's.

Never shopped at either store again.

Strangely, did not run into that attitude in Paris or London, at the luxe shops. Only in NY.

(Apropos of absolutely nothing, back in the day there was a story Jackie O fired her maid because the maid refused to handwash Jackie's delicates. I think that would include cashmere socks, if ever Jackie wore such a pedestrian item! LOL!!!)

I shopped Saks way back when.....90's? And boy did they need it. My experience on the Barney's shop was fair. I found a luggage tag for my assignment. Seriously, it's too nice to use.

I've made purchases of fancy leather goods in Europe and never met a snooty salesperson.
Your washing machine should have a gentle cycle, but no dryer, put on a towel to dry, and lucky you.

Did you get my flaked shop? $30 bonus? I had the Madison Ave location assigned but had a personal emergency and had to cancel. I really wanted to do it.

I live across the street from a mall with Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Lord and Taylor, and Bloomingdales. A few months ago, I went into Saks and was not dressed in anything special. Nobody helped me. Last week, I went there wearing a very nice St. John coat and a Gucci bag, and they were tripping over themselves to help me. They will judge you. Harshly. This is in NY also.
Back mid last century my dad used to buy all his pants from Barney's. He purchased the same exact pair every time..same color and everything which meant he never needed to go to a store to try things on. I do not think my dad ever bought from an overly expensive store. He was a complete practical and frugal type so I don't imagine at that time it was high end, just good quality for a decent price point. Times have changed. There is a once a year Barney's manufacturers price pop up store near my house. Maybe I will go look for cashmere socks...clearance is probably only $90 a pair.
My sister worked in Couture at Saks Fifth Ave (union square) San Francisco, it was and remains high end.
She started at 19 and retired at 80....for those that think being dressed well shopping there doesn't matter,
especially in a big city (not the subs), please, I heard the "behind the scenes" conversation between the Saleswoman". Wearing a Louie Vuitton purse and nice shoes (as Niner says) brings the Salesgirls to you, while thongs or beat up clothes has you wandering around looking for help. We used to go to the fashion shows (invitation only) and shopped there after Thanksgiving for the sales and my sister's 30% discount. Believe it or not, I still have a few of the clothes, they are classic and still in great condition. I might add then they weren't made in China, but in Paris, Italy, etc. I still have a beautiful leather jacket from Italy, but times have changed. Where would you rather shop Kohl's or Saks, just asking......the good news is, now you can go to Marshall's (my favorite these days) and buy a gorgeous Micheal Kors handbag for half the price of Saks.....

Barney's has always been a high end retailer. They do have sales like any other department store, there's always exclusions of course.
Years ago when I was barely grown up I went to a jewelry store looking for a gift for a girlfriend. The salesperson was the snooty type, certain that I was in the wrong store. I found a necklace, asked to see it, and ended up needing to cover up my sticker shock. So I said, "Well, thanks anyway, but I was really looking for something a little nicer than this" and left her standing there with her mouth hanging open.
PG - Barney's is my happy place. When I was in my 20s, me and my girlfriends literally LIVED for the Barney's warehouse sale. I still have a few sweaters and items that I scored at 90% off - 20 years later.

And you have sort of blown my mind, not about the socks or the shop - but that you are a 18-34 year old MALE. I'm sorry but I always imagined you as this middle aged woman!
Loving your socks.

I have a pair of of beige cashmere gloves. They are the warmest gloves ever with exception of my hard core ski gloves.
I place them in a small zippered mesh laundry bag and machine wash. Air dry flat. I have had them for 6+ years and they still look brand new.

I'd be okay with that. But, what makes you sure that because I was shopping for my girlfriend, I am male? Also, I'm on the top end of that demographic. What constitutes "middle-aged"?

Yes - after I wrote it I realized that it was an assumption (at least about gender). But if you fit into the 18-34 age group, even if you are 34 years old, you are not middle aged. Average life expectancy is 80 for a male and 84 for a female - so you still have at least six years before you can be called that... and really it isn't "polite" to call someone middle aged until 50. I don't even think I am middle aged yet.
I bought a nice pair of Lanvin sunglasses for this shop. I've never really cared for shades although I live in very sunny state. But these shades are fabulous! They were not the cheapest pair even after the reimbursement and promotion but I favored them over all the others. l

I never got the snootiness from the associates there. They were more bored than anything else. It was also an extremely small store to shop for at least 20 minutes in an even smaller section of the department store.
The only Barneys I know of in L.A. is in Beverly Hills, not even our great mall in another sub which has every shop except Barney's. I'm with Mickey, my happy place as well.

I will also add I have never experienced condescending sales associates. Some are agressive due to what I suspect is paycheck related i.e. commissions.
You can put cashmere in the washer? I thought that was a big no-no, like, I don't know, decaf?

I put my very delicates in the gentle cycle with cold water only and nothing has happened, google it.
How else would you clean them, other than sending them to the cleaners.
