Advice for long winded salesman
Once he started rambling on say well this has been very helpful but I am getting one of my migranes, gotta get up early, anything. You cant let them waste your time. I have used the pick up kid from school excuse for long winded car shops. You just have to set a limit to protect your valuable time.

^ That being said, my advice "for" long winded salesmen would be for them to not be long winded. If I were allowed to say that to them during a mystery shop.

I can't believe that an in-home sales shop would only pay $20. I would definitely have cut him off, made an excuse, and not worried about losing the $20 shop fee.

3 hours...I didn't speak that much to my ex in 17 years...lol ... way too long, I definitely would have thanked him and said I'll think about the info. you gave me. Could he have been flirting? Not boring, this isn't the laugh factory.

I think ceasesmith's advice is excellent for getting the salesman back on point and I don't have anything better to offer than that. However I do have advise for the salesman. Good salesmen don't dominate the conversation, they listen 80% of the time and gather information. If they are fortunate they will pick up the prospective customer's hot spot and complete the sale.

You need to start a thread on what we *wish* we could say during an instance like that while on a shop. I can't count how many times I have had to bite my tongue.
I had a similar in home shop for windows at my house. The salesperson asked about my life history, my kids, my wife, etc. After about three minutes, I clapped my hands twice and said, "Well, we're here to talk about windows. Right?" He left about twenty minutes later. I was able to see and hear the entire sales pitch and complete an accurate report. This was exactly what I would do in a normal situation, so I didn't feel badly about it.

I had an in-home flooring salesperson a few weeks ago. Although he made conversation easily, he was business minded. My fear was that he wouldn't leave until I agreed to the sale. He was insistent, even asking me why I scheduled the appointment if I wasn't going to buy today. He was very upset with me for wasting his time. Because of the change in his demeanor, I wouldn't ever consider the company. And I am in need of new carpet.
The fee was $20. I honestly don't remember exactly how long he was here. 45 minutes? But no gas spent and I was curious what I could expect to pay. Overall, it sounds like it could have been worse.

I was thinking about doing one of these for windows. The fee was $80. But, if you hand in a bad report for them, they know where you live and who you are. It did not seem worth it in the end.
