This only applies to me, but I know for sure some jobs are taken at base rate.

That's because I used to take them. smiling smiley

I don't know, but I do know a thing or two about this MSC. Am I supposed to believe they offered it to someone else for a bonus before putting the fee for a measly $1? Or more likely, 50 cents. It's a reimbursement only shop for $5 so any fee would be an improvement.

I have gotten drive in shops from them at $65 when they were still on the board for $6.

Good! Then you will not read about my goof. I think everyone will at first laugh at me and then a few might pity me...

So I accepted distant assignments at the listed price which I, in a hurry between jobs, read as one hundred and something dollars per shop. As it turns out, the fee for each assignment is the something.
Oops! I think I can salvage the day with a little of this and that along a major highway. But still... I should have been careful and asked for more money. Live and learn.

I just find it interesting to hear what others make. It doesn't make me feel good or bad; it's just interesting. And sometimes someone drops a nugget that helps MY bottom line!

And yes, disability now allows one to work. The rules were loosened about 20 years ago, when some smart person actually figured out that it helps the disabled feel like they are contributing members of society (I'm speaking only of social security disability).
Along the way, I have encountered only a few people who did not know that disabled persons are to be respected. I believe that as time passes and they meet more people, they will become accustomed to the many variations in personhood and ease up a bit. I hope so...

Hi there, I do not take offense to the poster. I agree with the concept of what was said. I really do not think anything negative was meant by the wording of the post. As Ricky Gervais has said, offence is taken and not given. It is important that this forum allow people to speak freely. Thank you.

No offense taken here, and certainly not meant to give any, either. I was just giving info to a poster who asked if a person can work while on disability.

Ooops. I think I meant "may work" while on disability.

Yes. Some can, some can't. If wages exceed a certain amount, benefits may decrease. Income from independent contract work is considered differently because it is/is like a business and involves expenses and different time frames which wage jobs do not have for employees.

Not that I owe ANYONE an explanation, but... First of all, I don't get SSI (welfare disability-means you did not work and pay into the system). On SSI you can make $100 a month and after that, they take every other dollar. I get SSDI, which means I worked and paid into the system and am drawing my own money back out. I can make up to like 750ish a month with no impact what so ever on my disability. I did not renew my food stamps because I felt I made too much money now. Not sure what they would have said because I did not even try to renew. This was over a year ago. Grocery stores etc. I use to buy things to reduce expenses, like toilet paper, bath soap, etc. since reimbursements are not taxable income.
Now as far as being disabled, IF you were in my shoes I doubt you would try as hard as I do. I can not stand for over 10 minutes straight. (Well maybe a couple of more minutes in a pinch). Both of my knees need a total replacement surgery, my left knee the meniscus is completely shredded and irreparable. My veins in my legs are not that great, I have venous insufficiency, which means that my blood "sags" on the return trip back up to my heart. Every single time I do a long road trip I come home with my left leg swelled up twice the size of my right leg. I have a problem with my back which means that I can not walk a mile, without my lower left back locking up and having to sit down to get it to release. The only place I can exercise for any significant length of time is in a pool of water. I am obese, with asthma. When I do a gas station I do the interior, go out and do the pumps and sit down in my car to complete my evaluation. When I go back in to give them the cure sheet I take the time to answer questions, even when I'm hurting. Sometimes when I get back to the car I am sweating and strained from the pain but I do the station correctly and fairly. But this is how I survive by doing "short bouts of work" followed by rest by sitting in the car driving to the next location. Medicare bought me a $6000 power wheelchair. When I got my car, (not this car, in 2007). I gave up the wheelchair. The last repo yard I did I could not possibly walk the fence it was just too big, in 98-degree heat. ( It did not look that big on the satellite view). I got permission to drive my car around and check the fence. I did not chicken out, quit or any other such rubbish. I did what I could according to my limitations. I checked every single section of fence and got out the car to check one section that I needed to honestly say I saw it.
I don't know and I don't care what other people would do in my situation. I am trying to get some money to buy some tax liens and get some properties to rent out as cheaply as possible. I have never in my whole life owned any property. When I'm hurting and in pain, I remember my dream, my dream of owning a swimming pool, of having passive income so that I can be self-sufficient. I don't know when my disability will get cut off I will continue doing everything I have to do overcome poverty and impoverishment. One day and one shop at a time until I get there.
I hear ya, F&L. Been there, done that. Now that I'm over 65, my SSDI switched to retirement, so I no longer have the income restriction. But when I first went on disability in 1989, the rules did NOT allow us to work. The thinking then was that if you were disabled, it meant you are 100% unable to work, therefore, if you can work -- even 6 hours a week -- then you are not disabled. So, no working.

Fortunately, about 2000, that rule was changed.

I cannot walk two blocks; can't stay on my feet more than 20 minutes. So I know EXACTLY what you're talking about.

Best of luck to you.
In my "best" year, I earned slightly more as an independent contractor than as an employee. It was always interesting and usually frantic. I am still catching up on sleep, projects, etc. Every day, I help someone with their job. I am not free to do much more of other work in my compressed free time. Mind you, I like this. I work extremely early, need no wardrobe for this, get to view critters (who do not notice or care what I wear), and listen to whatever good stuff I want to hear. This is not for the glamorous or the faint of heart.

That's why calendar apps don't work for me. Because of the intense flexibility required, I need to be able to see the entire week simultaneously and still be able to edit on that exact same page. Many, many, many times I've had to either swap routes throughout the week to make deadlines or move all routes that week to other days (push backs) because someone needs something done "today" or even "tomorrow".
Must disagree with above post as to "this is not for the glamorous or faint of heart". I believe this is for everyone that wants it and knows how to make it work. Disabled, retired, supplementing income, working full time and all the rest. I have done many "glamorous" jobs in Beverly Hills including high end dinners, Rolex, most of the high end stores on Rodeo drive, so, liking to dress up and play the part works as does rural living and not dressing up ,looking for the critters Shop-et-al speaks about. No limitations makes this a job for all...and I for one am glad I had the opportunity to take part in this sometimes fun, sometimes crazy work we all love to hate.
p.s. having another income for a family is needed, but being alone, not having expenses, needing to feel productive and make a bit without doing routes works.

Live consciously....

I was just thinking-- at a quarter to two this morning-- that if Irene were doing what I was doing, she was invisible. And... I should have put her to work!

shop-et-al,,,I don't get up until 7:30, and sometimes I'd like to be a fly on the wall (invisible).

I vaguely remember waking up at 7:30 am. That was like a whole other life!

Usually, I am napping, cleaning something, or on the way to mystery shops at that time.

A fly on the wall in my house isn't invisible and is soon a dead fly, LOL.

We are in a country with a booming economy and record low unemployment, I hear traditional business cant find employees, but, MS and field service companies still think they have you by the gonads. Twenty five dollar shops are not 17 or less and 10.00 or 7.00. Coupon shops with no return and now you have to see tree different people in a hardware store. If you people continue to act pitiful and work for peanuts you have no respect for yourself.

Youllneverknow,
I get your point, but your delivery of the message is way off! I am glad you have another income, some may not be as fortunate. I would be careful with my words, ever heard of KARMA!

AMORASMOM states--If you people continue to act pitiful and work for peanuts you have no respect for yourself.

Bob disagrees--Some folks are so strapped for money, they may have no alternative but to work for what is available. A scheduler for Trendsourse phoned me this afternoon, offering a PAD pf $10 for a grocery job. As I am not in need of money, I declined but was willing to shop for an extra $15; he refused and the call ended. If, though, I were desperate, I would have gladly accepted his offer. Refusal can easily exit the back door if need enters the front.

Jenny, that statement from the store makes no sense at all to me. If someone is allergic to peanuts and they eat them in the store they will have a reaction. I do not remember even seeing warning signs to not eat them if you are allergic. But duh! if you are allergic you should know that already. Taking them out makes them no more lethal. If you take them out and choose to feed them to an allergic person that should be on you. Not sure how the peanuts taken out could even be traced back to the 5G. They are not branded.
I was the only customer there the day I was there and was eating peanuts while waiting for my order to be up. That was when the manager leaned over the counter holding an empty bag and told me that. I was happily amazed.

@Jenny Cassada wrote:

That's crazy Sandy! Every shop I've been to for 5Guys says not to take the peanuts out because of allergies. One of my problems is peanuts in the shell. I will eat 17 of those boats if you let me and I will put them loose in my purse if I have to lol.

The only time I ever did a 5G the manager encouraged me to take home as many peanuts as I wanted. He even handed me an empty bag to fill up. So I felt I got my fee in peanuts which is my fave nut anyway.
