Bathroom photos

What is your opinion on companies requiring photos of the bathroom interior? Isn't it illegal to take photos inside a bathroom. It feels creepy to me.

Why would it be illegal? Companies want to make sure their restrooms are being kept up.

Worse yet, SeeLevel now requires a "restroom photo" for their FF shops. But the guidelines don't mention what they want in the photo! I'm just waiting for a report to be kicked back to me because I didn't capture the required elements.

So, hey, MSCs, when you want photos, please, please, PLEASE tell us what elements are required!

I'm not at all bothered by rest room photos. However, I usually go into the restroom and I'm the only one there.

On the rare chance someone is in there or comes in, I go to the other stalls and check for tp and supplies first, then take a pic when the person leaves or is in the stall with the door closed
The gas station bathroom pics are the ones I cringe at having to do. It's always a gamble as to how clean they are and I've had to walk right out of a few of them. It's hard not looking weird in a bathroom that has multiple stalls because you have to dodge people and strange looks. The only thing we have working in our favor nowadays is that nearly everyone always has their phones out and are taking pictures, etc. If I'm alone, I try to get a panoramic pic so the whole bathroom is included. If I don't have that kind of time, I take multiples, especially if I see anything that's an issue, and then do a collage in Publisher and save it as a JPEG to upload. I'd rather them kick it back to me and say I need to only upload one pic instead of not having what they want and that being the only pic I have.

As for the legality, just be super careful to not get people in the shots. Nowadays everyone is so litigious and it's just better the play it safe, even if it adds time on to the shop. I Googled your original concern and it seems that in some states taking pictures in a bathroom could be concerned "obscene," so who knows.
Just take the picture when you are alone in the bathroom. Or, if the bathroom has people in the stalls, take a picture of the sinks/trash.
Yep, for gas station audits if there are multiple stall bathrooms and someone in them, I take a photo of the sink and say in the report that the stall was occupied. It rarely happens though. I'm usually alone in there.
It would be a definite problem if you took pictures of people in the bathroom. One generally does not have an expectation of privacy in public but public bathrooms, locker rooms, and such are an exception.

I posted the thought before of standing in the corner and pretending to take a selfie to capture an image, assuming that you do not get a free moment. I'd rather be that weirdo.
I did a gas station audit at a truck stop. The manager put an out of order sign at bathroom doors and I had to wait for everyone to get out. It added a lot of time to my shop. I don't do it anymore.
I do a lot of gas stations and don't have a problem taking the pics. I don't do truck stops or stations on turnpikes, which normally have multiple stalls and can be used by several people at the same time. Taking a picture of someone in a bathroom is at best awkward and at worst, illegal. Most of the stations I do are one person unisex facilities and many require a key. Most are on the small side so I normally take the shot standing just outside with the door open. If need be I can take a pan shot.
I do a lot of these, and if someone is in there, I just get in a stall and take a pic in there. I usually remember to silence the camera app but not always haha
I am having this same issue but with convenience stores that have a McDonalds attached to them. Twice the restroom was owned and operated by McDonald's and I was to get photos of both men's and women's restroom. women's is no problem but the men's is. McDonald's told me both times Absolutely not when I explained what I was doing and asked for permission. I can't blame them its creepy. I just took a job with the same company for a gas station that is part of a travel center out in the middle of nowhere and I know the restroom is operated by the truck stop. I called to cancel when I realized what location it was. I can't imagine trying to take photos of the men's room at a truck stop. Gross.
Oh, yeah, I absolutely HATE the ones where you have to get photos of the men's room as well as the ladies' room. I usually corral a manager and have them knock for me to be sure it's empty.
Carry your paper work with you for those shops. If you get questioned, show them the paper work. I don't care if I'm outted as a shopper at this point.
I do a ton of gas station audits and never have an issue with those. I typically am in and out in about15 seconds so there's never time for anyone to notice anyway. There is only one location that is an issue...several months ago the owner was on site and told me that he had had a complaint from a customer who was uncomfortable with the other auditor. I asked him if I could take a picture if I made sure that the door was closed when taking it. He was OK with that so I made sure that the MSC was aware of the request and I make sure that I honor it so I haven't have an issue since.
