Auto mechanic shop - they screwed up my car

I had already filled out the report (MF) for an oil change when the next day I noticed the engine smoking. I pulled over to find that they had forgotten to put the oil cap back on. I was stranded for 2 hours while I waited for them to deliver me a new cap and some replenishment oil. Not sure if I should send MF an e-mail or not. Don't really care if the garage finds out I'm the MS. Not like I'm ever going to ever have my car serviced with that company ever again. Matter of fact I would like them to know it was me so they know how bad they screwed up. But not going to jeopardize status with other MF clients. On the other hand, at this point, I don't know if MF would add it to the report after 2 days.

I would mention it and let them decide. They may amend the report, or they may just mention to the client as an aside.
That is awful! It would be so helpful if MSCs could leave the reports open for these types of situations. I had something similar happen with a brake inspection shop.

I have let the scheduler know of issues, such as getting food poisoning from an undercooked burger and a large puddle of oil under my car the day after an oil change. Both times they said they would let the client know.
If I follow your post correctly, then you called the client and they rectified the situation. They understand that they screwed up, regardless of you being a shopper or a regular customer.

I have been in the car business a long time. Your situation is rare but not unique. It happens much more than you think. In very rare cases, the car owner ignores the smoke or puddles and the engine is damaged.

In your case, sounds like you have oil splatters on the underside of the hood as well as in and around the engine compartment. The shop should be responsible for cleaning the fire hazard up.

I'd let the MSC know and let it go after that. They can decide what they want to do with the info.

Shopping the South Jersey Shore
I know someone who had their engine get destroyed because of that happening. The place replaced their engine. How is your car?
Car is fine now. They did rectify the problem, but I had to sit around in the rain for two hours and they quoted me an hour.
Yes, let them know. There is supposed to be a second person who does a visual check of the work before the car is released/finished in most of these companies.
". I was stranded for 2 hours while I waited for them to deliver me a new cap and some replenishment oil. "

HA! ONLY 2 hours?
It took my husband the better part of a day plus the next morning to figure out the problem with our car was NOT the air vent damaged during the oil change but a hose that was left disconnected. And I had been so proud of myself to double check the cap was replaced properly before I left the location.
