Roadside Assistance

Has anyone done one of these? They appear to be i the $40 range, but I am hesitant because my ins. covers 3 or maybe 4 service calls a year. IDK what would happen if I exceeded that number.... I'm wondering if the svc calls count towards the yearly max.

Yes. I have done 2 so far in the last year.
I have AAA and supposedly, there is a cap on service calls with just the basic plan. Do you know if the the shops you performed count towards any max you may have? They look simple enough and with decent pay. thx.
I've done two of these, and I'm pretty sure they count toward your yearly cap. I did one in January of this year, then I needed a real service call in March. I had to have two tows just recently, so I was concerned that I was already over my max, but when I checked my account, neither of the earlier two showed up, probably because they were in last year's membership year.

Unless the MSC and AARP have worked out a way to expunge those calls, I'd be leery of taking one if you have a car that's not very reliable.... They're great shops, though, and the MSC is super to work with.

Thank you, BirdyC! I have been ok with the cars, but didn't want to leave myself high & dry over a couple of shops. I'll likely check to see when our Auto Club term renews.

This may not be the same shop I've done, because these are never for AAA, at least in my area. Maybe they're regional as far as where AAA gets done and where other plans are shopped.

I have seen shops for Auto Club, State Farm or Farmers, and I think USAA - roadside assistance shops....

The ones I've done are for Allstate, which is who AARP has theirs through, and for some other services that come with a new-car purchase. Those may be Allstate, too; I'm not sure. Mine were AARP.

I have AAA, and yes they count toward your total of 4 with the basic plan.
The MSC seems to be doing competitor shops, so there would not be any way to delete the service calls. If you make the call, they will count. Recently, there have been ones for people who have extended warranties. Apparently, the extended warranties often include roadside assistance that is handled by a company that does this for multiple auto companies. I decided that it was not worth my time to even figure out if I actually qualified.

These are easy shops and pay well. I'd do more than one per year if I weren't worried about exceeding my plan's limit of just three calls per year.

Thanks, Bird!
I am now convinced to pay more attention to these. I recall that one scenario was to lock my keys inside, but it is actually impossible to lock my "key" inside my car. I learned that by accident when I forgot the actuator inside and thought that I had locked the door by touching the door handle. Came back, no actuator in my pockt. Then momentary panic until I realized that the car was smarter than I was.

LOL! I "realized I locked mine in my trunk after I unloaded my groceries and didn't see that they'd fallen out of my purse." And of course, I'd already locked the doors. And my husband has my only spare set on his keychain. Apparently this isn't unusual; the guy didn't bat an eyelash.

The ones I saw that piqued my interest were for "no start" type calls, where the guidelines suggested loosening the battery cables..... Although intriguing, I don't see my self doing these until the weather dips below triple digits.

LOL -- that's the other one I did, a "car won't start" scenario. It was indeed cold out, and I made the call from the parking lot of my grocery store. I'd dressed for the occasion, so I didn't freeze to death....

I'm going to try and snag at least one of these this fall, before our coverage rolls into next year's and when the weather isn't center of the sun HOT. Thank you for your valuable input.
I do these quite a bit — the pay is decent although I’ve found MSC doesn’t pay as quick as they claim (they do pay — but it’s closer to 4-6 weeks than the 2 they sometimes market). I usually pick these up for the app ones where they reimburse for the fee — and doesn’t count any caps. There’s also another MSP who regularly does these too; they were paying $65 last year smiling smiley

The AAA 4 per year isn't just for the basic plan. I have the highest level plan and to my shock, it's 4 per year also. I used three in 24 hrs. due to a bad battery and misinformation from the service driver. Last time I used my roadside assistance it was unlimited but no more than x times in one day-or something like that many many years ago.
Other than the 100-200 mile distance the "premium" plan will tow, why would someone even pay for it? Unlimited service calls used to be the big advantage of that plan. Well, no actually the BEST advantage of having Auto Club is not having to step foot into DMV for most transactions. That makes it worth every penny.

That really depends on the state you live in. AAA in Pennsylvania can do registration renewals, but not title transfers. I think you can renew your driver's license for an additional fee, but you still have to go to a DMV Photo Center, and I could do the same online without a fee. In Delaware, AAA can not do any DMV services at all. DMV also seems to have a monopoly in NJ.
