I don't think this is a secret but -------gcflearnfree.org, is a Microsoft website that teaches an individual how to learn the basic of its office programs. It is also like a refresher course if you need to refresher your memory.
@ceasesmith I'm surprised nobody mentioned onedrive yet. It has online versions of all the microsoft programs for free. I'm sure there are some features that do not work, but what you need for MSing should be in there. I used it to keep track of my shops because I had a Mac for the longest time. There is also Open Office which is open source office products (including excel) that you can download for free. I used to use this but then realized I didn't need the programs on my computer so I went to onedrive. Onedrive is hosted by msn by the way.
I used Open Office up until recently (took over the teenager's Laptop that we purchased 2 years ago with MS Office for her old high school, she had to change to an iPad for her new High School (old one announced a closure midway through her Freshman Year, believe me, I drank a lot that year). I found no difference in how open office and excel functioned so if you don't need to buy it, don't, and you should have no learning curve if you find out you need excel somewhere down the road. For tech learning, maybe contact your local high school and inquire as to whether any of the students need service hours. National Honor Society usually requires yearly service hours so you could offer yourself as their student to learn technology and have them get their hours. Private schools and Parochial schools typically require service hours for graduation so if you have any of those in your area that could be another route to follow.

I thought OneDrive was their cloud where you could store the Office files.

I have a Windows laptop with a host of MS Office programs. My phone is Android with Google Drive, which is also on my laptop.
When I tried to put OneDrive on my phone, it took over and knocked out my Google settings.
OneDrive doesn't consistently sync my laptop files, so I don't have it as my default.
Can you use Excel and Word on a Chromebook, or does it have to be the Google apps?

You just said all the same things that happen to me. I have OneDrive which I have used since the beginning. It sometimes syncs perfectly. More often it does not and I have no idea why. The settings change without me changing them. My phone is also Android with Google Drive which is also on my laptop. The google drive doesnt work and I assume that is because of the One Drive. I am ready to ditch OneDrive. I don't know if you can use Excel and word on a chromebook but I would think you can. Google wouldn't put out a product that couldn't handle major players. You don't have to have OneDrive to have the free versions of Excel and word. You just need microsoft email.

I'm with honny and have Android, one drive does not work, but I put the word/excel icons on and you do have to sign up and pay a small fee, but it works. Apple may be different than Android....not a tech, just adding my experience.

Ceasesmith, my heart goes out to you. I wish I could help you out, I would if I was closer. I am in Massachusetts. Where I live the Senior Center and the Library get high school kids that can help and teach you more about the computer, it is free. If they don't have any of these services try to contact a high school or a college that would be willing to help you out. You are a true soldier, wow. I feel almost guilty, I get 10 to 12 hours sleep a night. You need sleep to heal your body.
I am not mystery shopping much now, but my schedulers would allow me extra time if I requested this. I would say, "If you want me to do the three shops, I will but I can't do the reports until tomorrow. If they know you are reliable, which I'm sure you are, maybe they would help you out. (I am 75 and in good health, lucky me.)

I've had this computer/printer set up for close to 10 years, and the other day I touched something wrong, and my printer started printing and I could not stop it! I didn't TELL it or ASK IT to print anything!!! Papers just spewed out of the printer! Scared me...well, pretty bad. I finally just turned off both the computer AND the printer. Waited a while, turned them both back on, ordered it to print one page, and it worked! I still do not have a clue what I did wrong, just utterly grateful it is now functioning as expected!!!)

CoffeeQueen, I recently got a new laptop. Google Drive is now Backup and Restore, but it syncs like Google Drive. When I open the GD app on my phone, my files are under "computer."

They can sync through a common browser. There are other ways also, like backing files (or even photos) up to the cloud.

I do not sync. For the amount of work I do, it is not necessary. Just now, I am attempting to find out if someone is tracking my phone. If this is happening, they would be doing something illegal, but the damage would be done before I can find out who they are! *sigh*

I dunno. It would be helpful to know that. Meanwhile, I spent a little time rummaging around in the phone and looking for suggested and known vulnerabilities. The good news is that it is acceptable in every way to update my phone. This might help with security. The bad news is that this might have to happen sooner than I wanted it to. Oh, well.

1.Manually shut off printer, not the computer. You don't have to shut off the printer, saves paper.

This month was a lot better but I missed my target because 3 shops had to be pushed into next month/year.
I am not looking forward to my next computer when I might have to purchase an office suite. There were some recent years when some computers came with microsoft office installed as part of the bundle even though they were renting by the month for many new computers. I was about to purchase a new computer and was thinking of the search for one with an office suite included but got excited about finding it in one drive. I use one drive so how do I find the office suite? I am a few years beyond Ceasesmith in my use of computers but still a baby at it.
But now so many say the one drive does not sync well. My laptop finally figured out that I retired after 2 1/2 years and just told me that I can no longer use the office suite I got from work. So they finally caught me and found I am not working there anymore.
The best solution according to my son is to purchase a slightly used refurbished and reconditioned computer as many of them come with free mircosoft office and the key codes for upgrading. Either that or invite him home for a few weeks to upgrade everything.
In my parents day everyone wished their son to become a doctor, lawyer or Indian chief. But now I think it is far greater to have an IT expert in the family!

Sandy - there are many free alternatives to Office. They may not have all of the functions of Excel and Word but enough to run for basic purposes. A quick Google search found this:

I have the Office suite. However, I've used LibreOffice, which is free. I like it because it looks almost exactly like the Microsoft counterpart so it was easy to learn and use.

Yes, they will open Microsoft docs and spreadsheets. Calc is the equivalent to Excel and Write is the equivalent to Word.
