Do the mattress shops really take an hour?

I'm thinking of trying a mattress shop. It says they can take up to an hour. Is that right? Is it long and annoying? Do you have to ask them lots of questions? And how long do the reports take? I'm seeing them bonused to $15.

As an average, I would guess no more than 30 minutes. The absolute lowest fee one should consider, unless they are in need of a new mattress, would be $30. After adding in the report, which can be quite extensive, and the travel time, this type of shop is certainly not a "pot of gold." My last such assignment ran almost two hours for the visit, drive and report, with a stated fee of $38. After submission, the MSC contacted me requesting a significant amount of additional information. I decided to cut my losses and replied to scratch the shop. They finally agreed to accept my report, but with a $10 deduction.
In my experience, it varies greatly. My longest visits were due to having to wait for an available associate. Try to avoid likely busy times, such as the weekends.
I have only done the mattress shops for intellishop. These have taken anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour depending upon how busy the location is and how much time the associate takes in their demonstration and presentation. It then usually takes me about 20 minutes to do the report on my phone in my car when I get done as long as I am focused. I've done these for $40 before, but the last few I have done have been for $62.
I've only done them for one MSC, but I see others posted, including one for, I think, $7, which has gone up to a whopping $10!

These can take an hour or more, depending on how knowledgeable the associate is, how long the "mattress fit" part takes (if you have to do that), and how hard they try to close the sale. The one that I used to do is with another MSC now, I think. But regardless, I wouldn't touch one for less than $30--and that's only if the location is well within a 10-minute drive of my house.

I haven't performed one that didn't take at least an hour.

Shopping Arkansas, Louisiana, & Mississippi.
I have done ones for different brands and different MSCs. The times have ranged from 45 to 90 minutes. Some require the names and prices of each mattress you try, in addition to a final quotation. Some require some amount of bargaining, which made me realize that until they "call" the district manager, you are not even close to the final price. Some are worse than used car dealers. At least used car dealers don't have unique names for each car!

The last one I did took an hour. I told hubby we need to buy that $4000 cooling mattress.
I saw offers for three mattress shops from three different companies! I took one of them with a MAO fee since that MSC's reports are pretty easy compared to the other company for which I've done a few. Figure I'd at least try one and see how it goes.

The MAO company's ones usually take about 30 minutes, and that's with me allowing them to perform all parts of their presentation.

My average time is about 45 minutes in the store and another 15-20 for Marketforce & 45 for others needing more narrative. I know more about mattresses than I ever cared to know. I learned along the way the stores shuffle people around like water, so far I've gotten lucky to not get the same rep.
I did 3 or 4 mattress shops last year, and the amount of time spent in all but one of those stores was about 15 minutes, tops. One of the stores I visited also offered a $25 Starbucks card for testing one of their mattresses (unrelated to the shop), and that took an additional 10 minutes. The reports were very easy to do and the pay was pretty decent ($30 per shop). In many cases, the amount of time the actual shop takes is not what the shop instructions say - some take much less time, and others take a whole lot more time than the scheduler will admit. If the shop fee is decent and you don't mind the travel required to do this shop, it shouldn't be too time consuming.
Be careful because as it was mentioned above they shuffle employees among stores. If you sign up for more than one try to do all of them the same day.
