I was shopping a grocery store a few years back, just before the holidays. Needed to pick up a pound of jumbo lump crab for a holiday crab dip and thought the shop would be an easy way to reduce the cost.
I entered the store as the manager was walking toward the entrance, by coincidence. He made eye contact with me and greeted me warmly, and I knew at that moment I was made. As I browsed through the produce area, I could see him at customer service watching me. No matter what aisle I was in, employees walked past me and greeted me. No less than ten employees "randomly" approached, greeted and offered assistance. I even observed the manager or other employees standing at the end of aisles I was in, just watching me. It was actually a bit creepy how over the top they were.
I went to the seafood counter to get the pound of jumbo lump I actually went to the store for and the employee there had been clued in to who I was on his headset as he was equally over the top with his greeting and the attention he paid to me. Unfortunately, the store did not have the pound containers jumbo lump I sought but the seafood manager offered to give me a two-pound container and said he would have them charge me the price of the one-pound container. Are you kidding me?! I told him it wasn't necessary but he was insistent. Who was I to say no? He said to just tell the cashier that he had okayed the price change and to call him if they needed confirmation.
Needless to say, at the register they did not need the confirmation. A front-end manager was there to bag my purchases and they did not question me when I told them of the highly unusual price change for jumbo lump crab. After the shop fee and bonus, price change and competitor coupon I used, I got two pounds of jumbo lump, plus some other groceries, for about $5 total. Fantastic haul.
While the shop company never implemented any rotation restrictions, I voluntarily stopped shopping that location.
