It can take a bit of moxie for sure, BirdyC. Moxie can however be cultivated for those who are not quite so outgoing. A tube of lipstick or a change of clothes can often do wonders. Although not for every assignment, I sure do consider what I am going to wear for some shops. The Pretty Woman shopping dilemma was real, but it can be overcome.
I'm normally not overly outgoing or assertive. But if I'm shopping and want to buy something, or I'm doing a shop that requires an active employee interaction, I make sure I get assistance. I almost always leave the dressing room when I find something that *I* think fits and looks good on me, but I'll hang out in front of the mirror on the sales floor, and if a salesperson walks by me, I'll find a way to get their attention. "Excuse me, I like these, but not sure they fit right; what do you think?" "Do you have these in another size/color/length?" Do you have a jacket that goes with these?" There are any number of ways to force an interaction.
I'm lucky, in a way, that I'm short and usually take a petite or short length in pants. Asking if a pair of jeans comes in a short length is always a good way to get an associate to engage. I did a Maurice's shop a few months back, and when I asked about wanting the jeans in a short length, two salespeople went looking. I got great service and great jeans! (You had to buy an item for this shop, but between the fee and reimbursement, they only cost a few bucks, so I was able to buy from their "better" line, and they're really nice.)
I learn something new every day, but not everyday!
I've learned to never trust spell-check or my phone's auto-fill feature.
