How to handle blurry/unreadable receipt?

I went on a shop last night and the printed receipt was illegible, as it was running low on ink. When I asked the cashier for a reprint, citing that I need to submit this for a work expense report, she told me there was nothing she can do as the machine was like that. Since a receipt is such a core requirement, what do you do in this situation to avoid shop rejection? I've tried explaining the situation, but should there be something else done to be safe?

I have had this many times -including no receipt at all. ONCE MF denied me payment, ent no matter what and it was pretty legible.

I'd say screen shot your credit card stating the amount.

Idea 2 if it is legible at all do a high quality scan and darken the receipt to the maximum.
Usually, if you submit what you have with a detailed explanation, it will be accepted. Not always, of course. If there is any very faint print on the receipt you can edit the photo with contrast/ brightness, etc. I think most phones can do that. Haven't had one in a while but I used to use a computer program like Paint or Office to bring out barely-there print. Worked well.

I just submit as-is. Never had a problem.
I had one recently I could not read at all but my camera had no trouble. I just took a photo and it was clear as a bell. My friend used to take a few photos as is of the receipt and then go over the numbers with a pen or pencil and take a second photo and submit both of them. She never had any issue getting paid.
I haven't worried about it much. I take a picture of what I have and if they ask for an explanation I give it to them but I don't worry about it. I have always been paid.
If all else fails, offer to mail the MSC the receipt.
I've had similar happen and the MSC accepted a screen shot of the charge on my credit card account.
I put my quesadilla in the same bag with my receipt. The moisture faded the ink. I submitted the receipt as is and it was accepted. I guess the editors worked their magic.

I had a receipt where part of the left side was there was no ink. (I guess the printer was messed up).. However, it did show the prices of each item on the right side and the grand total at the bottom.

My report was accepted smiling smiley
I often take a plain white paper and write all the info on the receipt on the paper. Then I lay the receipt on the paper, side-by-side with what I've written, and photo that.

Never had one declined, doing this.

Also, I'm a tech idiot, and wouldn't have a clue how to change/edit/lighten/darken a photo.

These are precisely the first two methods I use, only in reverse order. In the rare case that neither works (i.e. a cash payment), I require the cashier to make a handwritten receipt for me. All three of these methods have sufficed for me.
Yeah I recently did a shop where they were out of receipt paper. I just had the cashier write out a written receipt and it was accepted.
I often have to enhance receipts that are blurry or very light by using sharpen, contrast, brightness, and so on. Even if it doesn't end up perfectly clear, it's good enough to be accepted. Never have had a shop rejected or even a receipt questioned.

I learn something new every day, but not everyday!
I've learned to never trust spell-check or my phone's auto-fill feature.

It was not a shop but about the first week in December I stopped at Wendy's on my way to work for breakfast. I asked for a receipt and she said that the printer was broken. (Both the D/T and the front counter)..

Then a couple of days before CHRIST mas I stopped again and she said that it was still broken..

How can a restaurant not have a working printer? I guess with the holidays it has not come in yet? They could at least go to Office Depot and get a temp printer till one comes in or they get it fix?? Unless they need a special printer
I had a retail gas shop where no receipt printed and I simply submitted a picture of the pump showing the amount. As a follow up they asked for a screenshot from the credit card company showing the amount/date/merchant and it was approved.

I included in the report a screen shot of the store's hours (24/7) per the company website since I have had problems in the past with one of the editors. This convenience store was closed when I visited (maybe the employee was cleaning the restroom or on break and I waited a few minutes) with no sign on the door. I didn't want any hassle because one editor once said why didn't you check their hours on Goggle before going when I told them I checked on yahoo. Of course the guidelines did not state that you can only use a certain search engine to verify store hours.

Lucky‼️

Yes, lucky, I suppose. But the way I see it, if they are not going to trust me over a receipt for a piddly amount of money, I am wasting my time working with them.
Although I have never had a receipt questioned, I have submitted ones that were barely legible; this due to malfunctioning machines. Were I to encounter such a situation, I would first attempt to reason with the MSC. My argument being that the problem was with their client's equipment. If my payment were refused, I would terminate my contract. I would not have accepted abuse when I completed my first shop at the age of 60 and certainly would not in that I am now 80.
Where I live I am usually the only one ever asking for a printed receipt. Everyone else seems to use apple or google pay and no receipt gets printed or if they are in a place that auto prints receipts and I am in line I see every receipt ahead of me thrown into the trash. Except for antiquated systems like the post office many places only give receipts when asked and that seems to be almost never these days. Restaurants are the exception but even in some of those they just bring their handheld device over to the table and ask you to sign and auto accept some tip amount you can ask to change if you do not like the percentage they have chosen.
