Driving woes

I spend a lot of time on the road doing this thing full-time and sometimes, I can't help getting steamed at how some people drive. Here are a few examples:

1. Why do taxis *always* have to drive straddling 2 lanes? Do they not see the lines on the ground like the rest of us?

2. Why, in nose-to-tail traffic, do some people insist on leaving 2-3 car lengths between them and the vehicle in front of them? All that does is cause others to butt into the vacant spot, slowing the slowpoke down even more and causing me to have steam coming out of my nostrils! Follow the car in front folks ~ it's not that complicated!

3. Why are people still talking on the phone and driving? It's illegal here. You can always tell when someone's doing that because they're usually in the left (fast) lane, going way too slow and swerving like they're a bit drunk. Get off the damn phone or park the car!

4. I love living in a multicultural city. However, I really think that we need to bring back mandatory driving lessons for everyone, particularly new arrivals. Driving like one still lives in the desert with no road rules is not a good idea in Montreal, especially since we're known for having the craziest drivers in Canada.

5. Don't get me started on people who burn red lights, who think Stop signs are optional, or who forget that their car came with turn signals!

That's about it. Thanks for letting me rant a little and feel free to add your own driving woes to this tale winking smiley

Yes, unfortunately phones in traffic are still allowed here and it is always fascinating to see those with a phone in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other cruising down the road pretty much oblivious. I once watched a gal combing her hair with a cell phone going 10 miles over the speed limit. Guess she was driving with her knees.

We have a law that makes it legal to make a "right turn on red after stop." Of course the notion is that if you stop and there is no traffic coming, you can turn. Duh. It seems to have become a God given right to turn right on red whether cross traffic needs to come squealing to a stop to avoid you or not.

At considerable expense cameras have been installed at many intersections to catch 'red light runners'. But the first few cases taken to court have had a challenge to their constitutionality. If there isn't a cop on site to verbally swear he saw you run the red and stopped you promptly to make sure you were the driver, the photos of driver and tag are not sufficient evidence to prove you did it.
I can't help but think of a certain few senior citizens here in Podunk USA who believe that they have the right to make their own driving rules. When they drive on a walking path around public buildings, clearly marked PEDESTRIANS ONLY NO MOTOR VEHICLES. Or when someone parks kitty-corner across striped yellow lines in a parking lot, making a parking spot where there was none intended. It goes without saying that they have been known to drive the wrong way up the ramp to the interstate and wonder why "all these crazy people are aiming right for them". Of course you have little TW's talking to their friends in the car, texting, putting on eye liner and eating a McD's while driving. Naturally, they then swear at you when they cut you off.

They will be closing the 405 to rebuild a certain area, total freeway will be closed for several days.....this will be next month, nightmare.....will not go close to that area. I got a $535.00 ticket last year when they put up camera lights throughout my town, caught many people, a cop at Starbucks told me they have a 2 second delay, (knew it), said I went left on a red light, the light was yellow, but I couldn't get out of it, even after watching video where light was blacked out....had to pay before I could go to traffic school. Now city of L.A. is saying those lights are not legal, and might have to take them out, bad timing on my part. They claim it is illegal to use these lights for making money for the city, and they can only be used for safety reasons, but have been proved not to be any safer than it was before, with just a stop sign.

Live consciously....
In a town near me, they had a special vote and the townspeople voted the red light cameras out. Aside from drivers being ticked off, the cameras' presence also impacted the businesses along that very busy stretch of road as people took alternate routes to avoided the cameras.
