Carding at bar shops?

This has been bugging me, and I guess this forum is a great place to get feedback on this...
I have come across several bar/restaurant shops that all have a similar question, something like, "Were all guests in your party carded if they APPEAR to be under 30 years old?"

I'm 27, and my husband is 28, and how the heck am I supposed to know if we "APPEAR" to look under 30?

I never get carded, so do I just look old as dirt? How would you answer this question?

I would reply with your ages and say you believe you look under 30 and were not carded.

Krissy, I do those bar audits, and yes, now your supposed to card everyone that looks under 30. This is a tough call, who really knows another's age, but just guess if someone looks 30, they need to be carded. My trick (for myself) is not to do these shopw during happy hour when it's crowded. I do them either at lunch or 3:30 when bar has just a few customers, and usually not under 30. I really don't want to get the Bartender in trouble, so am not unbendable, if they look 30, fine... Living in a college town would make this impossible....by the way KRISSY, 30 would not be considered "old as dirt" in my world.

I know it isn't! But how do I know the 18 year old server doesn't feel that way about me?!
Krssy, Krisssy, my daughter is 36 and hopefully she is proud of it....oh, to be 27 again, what a great age and who really cares if the younger Bartender thinks you look older......just keep moisterising....smiling smiley

Hahaha Irene you crack me up. I don't have a problem with my age. I have a problem with the question being worded the way that it is. If it says "Are you under 30 and were you carded?," obviously the answer would be no. But it says "Do you appear to be under 30..." and I would like to say yes I do appear to be, but that's subjective, right?
I as well would like to say I look under 30...NOT! You just say you look 30 on a bad day.....not subjective, all in the beholders eye.

I would simply respond with your age and that you were not carded. For us oldsters it is always a thrill when some young whippersnapper who looks too young to drink themself cards us. People just don't have a good sense of age except in their immediate peers. The point of the shop is that they are required to card anyone who appears to be in the first third of their life expectancy and expected to err on the side of caution.

im 27 and do alchohol and tobacco compliance audits all the time... i think i get carded about 1/4 attempts... as to you looks... i dont know but honestly i doubt beauty is on a persons mind when they serve... perhaps if you look rich maybe they will expect a nice tip... and as long as your partner thinks you are beautiful that is all that matters...

be who you are and the people that care dont matter and the people that matter dont care...

It was actually funny that I bought this up, because I did a bar last night, and the bartender tells me, "I know you're both old enough, but secret shoppers come in here and I'm not going to get in trouble by not carding you" hahahaha.
I just came home from mine, and all four folks were in their 50's, got off easy this time...I know I didn't get carded,(haha), but was offered their new seasonial beer called "Nitwit", got a laugh out of that. They are so nice to me including the Manager, makes you wonder.....the reports have gotten longer and longer.
