When Management is the associate being observed

Had a Krogers shop this morning. The produce department was being restocked by the actual store manager. I gave him the opportunity to notice me twice and he never gave me a look, so he'll be dinged for that.
My concern, will he likely be embarrassed by his district guy and then go to the tapes to review the interaction (or lack of) and then I'll be outed and ruined for that store? Or, would he be in deeper doodoo for reviewing a secret shopper visit?

I think you're reading too much into it. It's probably like any other produce interaction. If I was him, I would just say that I was busy stocking the section due to the produce guy being absent. 75% of the time, nobody in produce pays attention to me.
I'm pretty sure they lose a few points. It's possible he might review the tapes, but don't assume they really show all that much as they might be quite grainy. The people they are really worried about are the cashiers pilfering or giving sweetheart deals to their friends and family. That's where the most cameras are and that's where they have windows in their upstairs offices to overlook the cashiers, if you haven't noticed.

Been there, done that, and barred from shopping several clients or locations over the years because the managers figured out I was the shopper. I don't know if they even had to review videos.

I don't see why a manager would/should get in trouble for simply checking videos.
I did a shop today and as usual produce person was busy stocking and despite standing near him glancing his way and then doing it again no greeting or eye contact or smile. He had an earbud and was talking on his phone. Seldom if ever does produce person look at or greet me. I prefer them stocking to greeting customers actually. Got my first question last week from an editor about name badge on cashier which was hidden by an apron. If I am ever caught as a shopper so be it. I do everything required and even go back into store if I need to confirm something like dates on milk, I often question if these shops are worth it…the pick ups are so easy…with all the new requirements these are getting to be ones I question doing in the future. A half hour in store is usual to do everything required. I think shop fees should be equalized between the pick up and in store shops. Lots of work for little pay.

Granted it was with the 'old' company but once I had to approach a group of employees in Produce to ask a question. The store manager was part of the group and he answered the question plus led me to a display before anyone else had a chance to respond.
Agree. The only reason why I do them is because otherwise, they won't let you do pickup shops. I predict needing to get deli staff names, cheese staff names, etc. in the future.

I don't see a problem. You put down the name of the person that helped you. Doesn't matter if they are a manager or a courtesy clerk. You put down the name of the person who helped you in that department. The person who answered your question or the person who acknowledged you and greeted you.
There have been a few occasions when I had to ask an aisle associate to help me find an item, and report on whether or not they walked me to the item. Several times the only aisle associate I could find was a manager. On a few occasions, I've had to report that I was only given the location and not walked to the item, and it was the manager who did that. So that's what I had to report. So be it!
Several years ago, I shopped a local, small carpet company. The associate who assisted me turned out to be the owner and he failed to make any of the marks. I would assume that he had some input into how he wanted his business shopped. Not surprisingly, I was permanently banned from that client.
I don't think you have to worry. The time from when you do the shop to when the store actually get that report is about 90 days. Its unlikely they will even have the tapes to review.
A few years ago I did one in a major grocery chain out where I live. I gave the associate at the butcher counter a zero because they were so rude. Two months later I got the same store again and the same butcher associate was there and while not as bad, still didnt score too high. My guess was the first report hadn't been delivered yet, or else they didn't care.
I only do those shops because I can get up $20 worth of free groceries.
It happens that the manager is the one who assists me. I just go with it.

@Koyote1 tapes are reviewed; I've only had feedback once, so no idea how often I've been reviewed.

I had the same exact thought yesterday while completing one of these shops, I wonder when they will want a name and description of the meat counter and cheese kiosk staff. The last company who had these shops seemed to add a question or two every few months, of course with no increase in pay. They know by adding a question or two in "baby steps" that we will still be happy to do them with no increase for the additional observations. They will fly off the board just as fast.
