What is your excuse...

I am completely numb to feeling uncomfortable about asking for a receipt when the pump doesn’t provide one. I smile, make good eye contact & ask for the store purchase receipt and then quickly ask for the receipt for the pump # X.

I find it funny and slightly challenging to ask for $2.00 of gas at a full service site without cracking a smile. I just say confidently, “Could you top off the tank with 2 bucks of gas for me, please? They always confirm the 2 bucks and I just smile and say, “Yup!”

Just control your situation and be confident.

I even had one of those jobs thru a temp agency where I was the person who had to go thru copies of photos of a few pocket fulls of crumbled receipts to reimburse an employee for a business trip. It was an interesting experience...not just the few dollars of gas receipts but the difference between one employee with the same allowances for food who regularly had a cheapo meal at Mc Donalds or bought something to eat in a 7/11 while the next person literally ate up the max of $50 per dinner in a fancy restaurant every night.
I hate going inside asking for a receipt when I pay at the pump..

A while back I filled up my gas tank and I got $ 3 worth and it did not print a receipt.. I went inside and I told the cashier, I need my receipt on pump # 5 please..

He gave it to me no questions ask..

Sometimes I tell them, that I like to keep up with my finances. But not all the time..

You need the receipt because Dave Ramsey trained you well to keep all receipts. You think something is wrong with fuel line or whatever is mechanically plausible and you can put this in Excel at home... And, if you can play dumb... " "is there an app for this fuel line thing?" You are driving someone else's car and they don't need you to replace all the gas, just some of it. You want to show partner/accountant/whomever that are not such a wastrel with the credit card.

Most people - myself included - would have to google "Dave Ramsey" to know him. Best not to name drop.

True; I have no idea who he is or was.
I don't have an excuse because they don't care.

Seriously, nobody cares that you're offended.
I don't care one iota if someone looks at me funny or thinks it odd that I need a receipt for a small purchase. I just ask for it and it doesn't bother me if they think I'm weird. I've had way more embarrassing circumstances occur in my life than that, especially when I was younger and used to party all the time... the things I've done and said while drunk, oy. Anyway, it's none of their business why I need it, but sometimes, I think it sounds more natural during certain interactions to explain a little, so I say, "I'm trying to keep track of everything" with a slight air of annoyance as if it's a pain in the butt for me, too. But it's very rare for me to do that because the employees don't really care.

What city are you working in where the $5 shops are being taken so quickly?
That's the reason I provide for needing a receipt. Trying to earn more points. Now that the gas purchase is at $2, I still cringe when the pump doesn't provide a receipt.
