What would you do if this happened to you during a shop?

Yesterday I did a drive-thru shop for coffee. It required two drinks, one an energy drink that I would not drink and the other a coffee that I like. The pay was high enough to be worth tasting and discarding one of them. When I reached the pay window, the barista said that the person ahead of me had paid for my order! It was close to $15. No receipt, no pay. What would you do?

That was nice of them to pay for it.. What I would have done is take the drinks and told her That was nice of them or something that effect.. I would have left and then about 5-10 minutes later go back and get the require drinks.

If she asked what you were doing back just say A) My friend just called and they asked for me to pick up these two drinks.. B ) You could say that theses are so good that I decided to get two for later.. Even though you didn't like one of them

You could have pay for the person behind you but chances are they might have order the require drinks..

What did you end up doing

I would redo the shop a few minutes later as well.
To the best of my recollection, I have experienced someone paying my bill at three eateries; all were shops. Due to being unprepared for the first courtesy, I bungled my reaction. For the other two, though, I merely informed the MSC and was paid my meager fee. Each was extended to me as a veteran.
I would of asked for the receipt and submitted the shop.
I'm with Mr. Stone, tell them that you need your receipt to prove that you bought the correct items. You don't need to tell them who you need to prove it to. If they refuse, hand them back the drinks and say you can't accept them. I'm really weird about paying my own way, I don't accept items that I don't pay for. Call me a weirdo if ya need to.
"Could you reprint the receipt, please? I need it for business."

The downside is that you have now made yourself memorable, usually the one thing you don't want to do.

Do not read so much, look about you and think of what you see there.

That happened to me on a McDonald's shop years ago (where we had to do a drive-thru AND inside purchase). I explained why I only had the inside receipt on the report and was reimbursed the full fee plus the inside amount. I looked at it as not having to wait a month and a half for part of my reimbursement.
Thanks for the suggestions! I didn't think about requesting a receipt, thinking the person who paid for my order probably had her order on the same receipt. This shop was a long distance from home...the last stop on a route...so I couldn't go back much later. I finally drove through about 5 minutes later and ordered the same thing, saying that since I didn't have to pay for the previous order, I wanted to repeat it and take the extras to a colleague at work. The shop required specific drinks, so I had to order a second energy drink and waste it.
Service, there are options for the coffee (only 2 or 3 though), but not the energy drink. There is one of those coffee kiosks in the nasty little town near me, I will not do the shops because of being required to buy the energy drink.

Who, there is that, but I have rules for me.. it has nothing to do with shopping. I pay my way. I just got into a huge fight with my sister a few months ago, she continues to tell me that I'm a charity case and I'm always begging for money, but I haven't asked anyone for anything, in 40 or more years. I borrowed one of my mother's cars a couple times before that, and asked for help with a phone bill ONE time when my now 46 year old son was still in diapers.
Just tell them thanks but your order is reimbursed by your company and let them pass the money on to the next order. You don't have to say it is a mystery shop, my boss sends me to get lunch every day and reimburses me.
I had this happen when I was doing a grocery store shop and was at the checkout. I had already talked to all the employees in the assigned departments. I took all the groceries that the other person had paid for and put them in my car. I just went back in and picked up more groceries and just redid the checkout portion of the shop.
A little off topic, but this is such a weird practice to me. Why do people do it? If you want to perform a random act of kindness, why not for someone that needs something?
They call it "paying it forward." It's just a way for folks with more money than sense to feel less guilty.
If someone intentionally chose someone with a need, then it wouldn't be random.

so, the whole definition of random is for it to be random.

I just attempt to smile, wave, open doors, help someone reach something, let someone go ahead of me in line, allow other cars to pass....any little thing I can to lubricate the constant friction that is living now, here, 2024.
Far from perfect and don't remember all the time (usually lost in thought) but there's always room for more.

I still don't get paying for a luxury item for someone that is already paying for it. You can randomly help someone in need.
Any act of kindness is still kindness. It does not need to be for only someone who is obviously "in need." Nice is nice, period. And sometimes someone could be having a hard time or something they are dealing with and it can be serious and not obvious to the onlooker. So, it does not matter if they are buying Starbucks and can "afford" it. Just like anyone who has much can still be grateful, another good trait to possess. You do not need to be down and out to be grateful. And you do not need to be down and out to be treated kind.
my personal belief is we all are in need of kindness...anyplace, anytime, anywhere
This happened to me. I submitted photos of the drinks proving what I received, and explained the situation. The report was accepted.
It happened to me on a credit card job. I was sent 3 live credit or gift cards and I had to try them in a specific order. None of them worked so I was required to pay and get reimbursed for anything that couldn't be restocked. I left to get my personal card out of the car and another customer paid thinking I didn't have money. So embarrassing!!.
