Kroger Downsizing

It was announced today that Kroger will be doing cost-cutting measures like closing stores. I suspect the mystery shop program will be the first to go.

It would depend upon the new labor contracts since mystery shopping results are part of the process. Kroger's earnings were below expectations for the 1st quarter this year so they are belt tightening.

Do not read so much, look about you and think of what you see there.

Several Kroger stores in my area have rats and there have been news reports. Rodents were eating through the bread, pasta and marshmallows. Some were found in the sushi area. The health department came in and shut one store down for several days and when they came back to reinspect, they found more. I know a lot of people are not shopping there now. Let’s hope the new shops aren’t “count the rodent pellet” audits.

Did the rodent make eye contact, smile, and verbally greet you?
I read that 60 stores nationwide were closing and in the same year they are opening 30 new locations so this is a net 30 less stores and they will still have thousands. In my neighborhood there are two Ralphs stores just 3 blocks apart. Why 2 a few blocks apart? Long story.
The article said they typically close 30 underperforming locations per year and open others but they put off closures of old stores during their several year attempt to merge with Albertsons so now they are catching up from that lull in closing stores. This does not mean they will not shut down their mystery shops but the bottom line is they are still making big profits.
I've seen many locations get renovated. One built a new store across the street from it for expansion. The old location was already big with gas and pick-up, but the new location is the size of some superstores. Its layout in the actual store is similar to Whole Foods.
