Dead Giveaways

The instructions said to not say or do anything after ordering the burger and wait for the employee to offer the fries and drink. It was so funny because after I ordered the burger, she just started at me; her hand was still on the register. She didn't move a muscle. So, I stared back. I didn't move a muscle. I think it was a showdown, like the ole' west. I was waiting for us to draw! LOL. Finally, she asked if I needed anything else. I was so relieved. She really didn't want to ask if I wanted anything else. It seemed like we stared at each other for 3 minutes.

This one I act uncertain through the whole transaction. I will ask about the size difference between small and medium... I didn't forget about fries, I just wasn't sure which size to get and was taking my time silently contemplating (LOL). Same with the drink, I might ask if refills are included or do they have orange soda or whatever amuses in the moment.

I always find the dine-in Black and White Bear shops where you don't order a drink to be a dead give-away. I wouldn't be surprised if the cashier yelled out "Mystery Shopper Special" right here" when I decline a drink with my spicy kung pow.

I haven’t seen any impediments to asking for a cup for self serve water (grin)

My closest location does not have a self serve drink place so you have to ask for drinks, water, refills or whatever, even napkins have to be asked for. I have eaten there as a reg customer since they first opened up decades ago and have never ordered a drink. I often see others not ordering drinks esp on carry out. I doubt they see this as a sign. But then in my city many carry their own water bottles around with them attached to their arm.
I'm a paying customer, and I expect you to do your job. Check me out, da*m it.

I will wait until they make me use the kiosk, and I am writing that interaction into my report.

One that recently hit me hard was that my trusty truck-stop shops now “require” you to go through the human-check out instead of using the self-check out. The only people who used the cashier are professional drivers of those who are ordering prepared food from the steam table. So I’m standing there for a few minutes with my pack of gum while there are 3 idle self-check out machines not being used.

I don’t think this is a “dead giveaway” or anything like that but the cashier is probably wondering why I’m bothering him or her instead of just paying at the self-serve area.
If I am at a truck stop, and they try to give me lip about the receipt, I tell them this is a business expense, and I need the receipt to get reimbursed, and that the expenses add up after a few days. I did some reveal gas station a few years, and one of the shops didnt want to give me a receipt. I got hateful, and I said that by refusing my receipt, I'm not getting paid, so you are refusing me my right. This company fined the brand when it refused the shopper. He gave me my receipt.

Love's is supposed to give you $1.00 if they do not offer the receipt. I've been given a dollar on more than one occasion because the kiosk didn't issue receipts.

Whenever a anyone comments about why I need a receipt, I tell them that I use the Fetch app to collect a few pennies per receipt. Many admit that they do also. [BTW, I do use Fetch as well as CoinOut, Merryfield, and Pogo.]

I've got to look into those things....
When they say they already had the shopper that week. I respond, I'm sorry, but I found this job on a job board. The other shopper must have forgotten a photo, and it was rejected. Just be nice, and they will let you do your thing.

As for the gawking managers, you must have been acting suspiciously in the car. Some high-crime areas are on alert.

I did a gas station revealed audit not too long ago and the cashier told me they had already had their secret shopper a few days before. I asked how she knew and she said she saw her take a picture of the pump before she came in. Another gas station/C-Store I did a revealed was very on guard and slightly aggressive when I came in because he’d watched me sitting in my car on the security cam several minutes doing paperwork or checking on jobs (or who knows what i was doing, i just didn’t put my vest on and come in right away). They were alarmed and all the managers had to come out and find out what I was doing. That was a weird one, but yeah, watching you on security cam doing stuff other than coming in or getting gas on camera, and taking pictures of the pumps were the giveaway.
I've heard that chime and announcement at my local Love's.

I do the truck stops by me regularly - usually a couple visits a month for the past 4 years (unrevealed shops) and I'm pretty sure they all know who I am at this point. Usually within a minute or two of me entering the store, I hear a little chime go off inside the store and they'll announce that it's time for a courtesy check.

Luckily, most of the ones by me are in good shape and wind up with good reports, so we all just keep doing our thing.
You can get hidden glasses from Amazon for $35 to $50, depending on the brand. They use them when they do the BK video project, and some use them for storage shops.

@Momomomo wrote:

@viv0412 You brought up using glasses for a car wash shop. Do you have a pair of these glasses and use them on your shops? Are they the Metas or are you talking about a different brand. The Metas have a feature with a light that blinks from the time you start recording until you finish that makes it clear you are recording them. Apparently Meta does it for privacy issues.

Asking the gas station's store hours seems like a giveaway. Besides shoppers, who else is asking this question? Too many times the cashier thinks that I am asking what their, the cashier's hours are, and I have to quickly explain, no the store, the store hours. Plenty of gas stations don't have uniforms or maybe a backcourt t-shirt, but in most of those cases no nametags. Asking the cashier's name can seem aggressive and put them on guard. Why would a customer need to know that? Doesn't asking them for their name put them on the defensive and think why is this person asking this?
That game is the best part for some store clerks.

hmm, I've never seen a truck stop with a self check out. And I go to a LOT of truck stops.

The dead giveaways that are no longer, are the stupid questions we used to have to ask at grocery stores. How to cook a piece of meat, when it's obvious that the child behind the meat service counter can't even boil water without help. Or asking the same employee in the deli four different times how to order something in advance.

Most gas stations finger out that you're the shopper because you come inside to get a receipt for $4 or $6 worth of gasoline when the pump doesn't print it for whatever reason, and asking for a receipt for a piece of gum that you paid for with cash in a C-store. But most are going to reveal themselves anyway, but it still seems stupid to play the game first.

Most of the ones that I think I would be revealing myself if I follow their rules, other than gas stations, I just don't do.

Sure. Its one of those things that would make you stand out as a customer though...something that we're supposed to avoid. I think the OP was asking about the times when the guidelines make you stand out.
I cover pharmacy questions like this by claiming it on my "mom" who has a bunch of health problems and medications she takes and asking if this will interact with them... I just keep a random piece of paper with a bunch of meds written on them as a reference.

I think it's important that we always do our best to be discreet and present ourselves as a regular customer.

However, the clients and mystery shopping companies set up the guidelines. They tell us what we should do, what we should observe, how we should order, what pictures we need to take, etc. They let us know if there's a rotation or a waiting period, and they assign the shop to us based on their guidelines.

If those guidelines are obvious and make it easy for us to be recognized, then that's not our problem. That's the problem of the client and the msc. So my suggestion would be to do your best too be discreet and anonymous. But don't go above and beyond the guidelines to try to be anonymous. We are being contracted and paid to follow the guidelines of the evaluation, no more no less. Just do that and do the best that you can.

I feel like filming an entire car wash and being required to capture the crew members faces (requiring the shopper to move their cell phone position as the crew members move) is too obvious.
As Viv said, you can get some relatively cheap glasses with a camera, but you will need to move your head slowly.

You can also use your smartphone. Just put it in your shirt pocket. With very little practice, you can get the target and smartphone video quality is excellent these days.

If you will be staying inside your car while video recording, proping up your smartphone in the cupholder or against passenger seat works great (also works great for drive-thru shops).
I just checked the new guidelines for BJ. You have to ask the host for a different table. They are going to start figuring out who the shopper is right away.
I think my picture is posted and all of my local five guys locations ha ha ha.
I think my picture is posted and all of my local Five Guys locations ha ha ha ha ha ha. It’s like going into Cheers where everybody knows your name and around here they’re always glad I came!! Much different when I’m traveling and I visit a non-local Five Guys.

I will say one time I was at a Mattress Firm and while the agent was assisting me, I was still on a mattress. He went over to check something on his computer. I glanced over there and I actually saw my picture on the computer! I had been at another location earlier in the day so apparently they had shared the information because I had the same clothes on. Just act natural.
What about one of the shop requirements is to take a picture of the display case where the hot food is?

I have done a few shops in the past, where you have to take a picture of the display case.

I believe some have said that you have to take a picture of the display case at Jersey Mikes?

Is that a give away when you do that?
"a picture of the display case at Jersey Mikes? Is that a give away when you do that?"

Noticing anyone taking photos is above the Team Member pay grade. No one notices or cares.
I’ve only had to take photos of a pizza display before. At JM’s, you need to take photos of something else.
I used to think they would care about me snapping shots at JMs....
but they could care less as it turns out

Life was passing like a hand waving from a train I wanted to be on
I mail a lot of packages. To keep stating that I'm mailing for my mother and don't have a clue what the contents are would seem to identify me at this point. Or mailing a forgotten lithium laptop battery. Even if they don't recognize me, personally, they have to remember hearing the same excuses.
Asking for the entire Mellow Mushroom menu to be photographed isn’t obvious giveaway. I’m sure this was why I was banned.
Guitarzan, nope.. taking pics of the menu is not what got you banned. I know this because my son and I do Mellow Mushroom shops and we don't have any issues taking pics of the menus. And we haven't been removed the from project or deactivated.

There are a LOT of folks that take pictures of their food and the menus to put on the internet, specifically on Google. My son is a local guide on Google Maps, he takes pics of menus, signs, and food and posts them on Google maps. If someone asks why we're taking pics he tells them about that. And sometimes they give him free stuff or big discounts on the food. Some folks justs take pics to post on Faciebutts, or Instagram. They really don't care about folks taking pictures.
