Yes, couponing can get you some really good deals. Unfortunately most coupons are for ultra-prepared products, but there are still some good ones out there. To combine a BOGO on shops at a store where they will honor one manufacturer coupon and one store or competitor coupon on each of the items will often result in being paid to take the stuff out of the store. If you have other items and your total is a positive number, they don't notice that on the $3.29 BOGO item you presented a total of $4 in coupons.

My all time favorite was a cookie deal I could not resist. BOGO at $3.29 and I bought 4 packages for a total of $6.58. I presented 4 $1 off manufacturer coupons and that got it to $2.58. I then gave them a competitor coupon where you buy 3 and get 1 free. I was buying 4, so they took off the $3.29 for one package. They paid me $.71 to take 4 packages of cookies out of the store.
I've been trying to utilize some coupons, but like Flash said they are usually for highly processed foods. With some diligence I have come across some for various pantry staples like mayo and my soy milk. Where I excel at couponing are for places like Bed, Bath & Beyond, Ulta and office supply stores. Thanks to an app called CardMobil I am constantly signing up for rewards programs which have saved me some money on necessities and treats alikesmiling smiley

My stores don't pay me because the States I shop in have sales tax. After an item hits the free point, that's it, there's no credit to me. I'm required to pay sales tax.

Most of my stores will sell one item of a BOGO at half price. That $ can usually be negated with a coupon.

To add to the fun, I pay with a cash rewards card. And, of course, it's a shop with reimbursement to cover my out-of-pocket :-)
My stores are adamant that on a BOGO you pay for the first item whether you take the second one or not. We don't have sales tax on food, but there is on soda or most hot food from the deli. It is nuts. If I buy fried chicken hot in a box it has tax, if I buy it cold (exactly the same stuff) in a plastic shell it is the same price but no tax, but if I buy a rotisserie chicken hot or cold it is no tax.

I usually pay with a credit card with bonus cash back that month and have begun buying gift cards during the months that offer 5% cash back at grocery stores to use during those months when the deal isn't on. And of course my shops then reimburse . . .

The gift cards on non-bonus months is a most-excellent idea!!
It is sort of 'acts of quiet desperation' in an environment where a savings account is paying .05% :-(
Here we pay sales tax on food, but it is reduced from 8% down to about 3.5%. I have also shaken my head at the items that are on the high tax list, such as rotisserie chicken. To me it can be very cost-effective and offers someone without a lot of time (like a working mother) a healthy alternative.

I eat lunch at Ryan's restaurant. Costs me $5.72 including my drink as a senior. Then I buy a go box for $6.50. While I eat my lunch, I stuff that box full of baked chicken minus the bones and skin. I can get 10-12 chicken breasts worth of chicken in that box. Then I use the chicken for everything from quesadillas to pot pie! Saves me loads of money and time and I eat tons of veggies for the lunch. Wish they were shopped. What a deal that would be!

All the store here ring up BOGO at half price. I have been couponing for years and yes many coupons are for processed foods. No one eats those daily but I still buy them for the teens who want a quick snack. This month while the coupons are good, I will stocked up on canned vegetables, pasta, hot sauce and powdered sugar for the year. I love it when there's a store coupon attached to a product and I have a manufacturer's coupon.
Wow, Ihad no idea that there are states that charge sales tax. How long has this been going on?

OK that comment was truncated. I meant sales tax on FOOD. Did not know.
Cyn
At one time in Missouri the sales tax on food was the same as any other retail purchase. I don't recall when, maybe 10 or 15 years ago, it was reduced on most food items purchased in a grocery store.
