need a second part time job

I love mystery shopping and will keep doing it but really need another part time job that I can do from home if possible. Data entry, customer service or anything like that would be great but so many scams. Has anyone looked into this and found anything worth while?

You certainly need to look closely at any of the opportunities that find you rather than vice versa. I know a gal who does medical transcription. She formerly worked in a doctor's office and made her arrangements herself. She had the terminology already as well as the typing skills. I know of folks who are seasonal tax preparers with the storefront return preparation places, but it is probably way too late to get the classes to do that for this tax season. I know of folks who scour Goodwill and the thrift shops for treasures to sell on eBay. My sense is that business there has gotten very slow. I do know a couple who paid a lot of money to set up a website to do drop ship sales. They lost so much money they now seem to spend their time pointing fingers at each other. And then there are the folks who sell Avon, Mary Kay and Tupperware. I frankly have no idea how they are doing these days.

As an extension of mystery shopping you might want to consider merchandising. Check the NARMS.com website.

I would be wary of any jobs for at home work shown on Craig's List and Career Builder. You may want to consider what your own skills are that others admire in you and find a way to market that. For many years my former sister in law did weaving using natural materials and dyes. She did a couple of craft fairs and after that had enough standing orders that she couldn't keep up. Several of her customers wanted her to make the fabrics into finished garments, so she branched off into that as she was a competent seamstress. Pretty soon she was making custom garments from commercially available fabrics and hardly weaving at all. One of my sister's friends set up a business cleaning up new homes once the builders were finished so that they were move in ready. She branched out into house cleaning between tenants on rentals and house cleaning and staging on homes for sale. She apparently has grown it into a full blown business with about 40 employees, but it started as a favor to a builder friend. For many years I ran a very profitable home typing/editing/ghost writing business. It meant I could be a stay at home mom with my kids and I found my niche was statistical typing and scientific notation. Luckily my kids took long afternoon naps until they were ready for school so I always had daytime hours to get my work done. The mass availability of computers such that anybody could produce camera ready copy pretty much put me out of business.
start branching out... remember the internet is full of scams... and nothing will get you rich quick short of the lottery or inheritance... when something promises you large returns its bogus... or asks for a large upfront payment or even a small one...

look into mturk.com, clowdcrowd on facebook, or inbox dollars for small tasks

opinionoutpost.com is the best survey site i have found that pays cash...

www.fiverr.com is good too... if you have small items/tasks people want done

i have signed up with care.com and sittercity.com and i am assuming they are legit...

unless you are really popular or want to sell to your friends i would stay away from avon, marykay, tupperware, quixstar/anexter, american income life, cutco, or the pamperedchef... all these companies are legit but they require you to sell to your friends... which chases some friends away... but if that is your idea of a good time then by all means have at it...

shopping north west PA and south west ny
I say definitely do surveys and sign up for mypoints.com... I have redeemed mypoints several times. All you do is click on an email or you may chose to buy something at a great rate and get points.

The natural extension from being a shopper to needing reliable work is to move to editorial, I think. Keep you eyes peeled for openings with any MS you have a good relationship with.

Flash mentioned medical transcribing, but I think that's a shrinking industry as well. When I was hiring editors a few years back, I got a lot of them from the medical transcription field, since they had great great typing skills and attention to detail. It was a comfortable move for them to go into MS editing, though they pay was significantly less.
Certainly my concern with medical transcription, envelope stuffing, 'processing rebates', website sales and a whole lot of these things is that they are pretty scammy email solicitations to get you to purchase lists and 'how to' instructions and other garbage. Everybody wants to make an easy buck from home is the lure and even if a few folks are successful in making them work, the vast majority of folks who attempt it will just be out more money. It is why one looks hard at one's own skills to find a profitable niche that frankly you research and build for yourself.
