Tell or not tell

I get several pm requests asking me who does what, I want to help, but not always knowing where the askee lives, I am not upholding my ICA agreegement, and I am put into a tough spot....so, tell or not tell, what do you guys do?
I ended up giving a very sparce hint.

I don't because you never know who's just trying to get the goods on a fellow shopper and cause problems. That happened at a different board years ago and it got ugly.

While there is no proof, e-mail communication between myself and shopper on that other forum happened about the same time as me being removed from a project with company. I gave out no proprietary information, just expressed my disappointment over some things and commented that I was phasing them out going into the end of last year. They dumped me within 2 weeks. Coincidence, maybe. I am more than willing to help people in public or private, but see no reason to put my business on the line to tell them something they can find on their own if they just show some ambition.

I agree, my gut says no, my heart says, yes....but business wise, I know it's not smart to trust all out there (I would like too), I never asked strangers
who does what, the research I put into learning without benefit of any forum
for the first 3 years of shopping have been to my advantage. Lisa, I had my own negative experience on this forum by bad-mouthing an MSC over their editor,
and received a very low grade for what I said. I have learned (hopefully) to
keep my big mouth shut!!

I may give a hint to a forum member who has been around for awhile and has contributed to the forum in a positive way. If someone who has never posted, who I do not know at all, asks who shops XXXX, I don't even think about sharing anything at all. They are strangers to me and I don't give hints to strangers and I certainly won't break my ICA. I feel that when I signed the agreements I gave my word and that means something to me. I explain the confidentiality agreement, because I figure they probably do not realize they are asking me to break my ICA.
Agrees completely with AustinMom.

Earlier today I emailed a forum member a question. I said specifically don't tell me the name of the company a yes or no will be fine, but is the company XXX, and here's why I am asking? They simply told me it wasn't. We discussed some other things and they gave me some tips. They did not give me the company they were referring to on the forum - and I had absolutely no problem with that.

I hate to say it, but I don't tell new folks with just a post or two the names of the companies. Like you, I want to help, but I want to see some ambition and initiative from them on the forum - before I would even consider giving hints.

I don't know where they live! Jobs are hard to come by and the competition for those jobs is rough in this area!

Not telling. I consider this a case of personal ethics. I signed the ICA and I abide by it. If you have any doubt (of heart or head) about an ethical issue, you must go with the doubt.
