I am an undiagnosed 50-something.
My 27yo son has Asperger's Syndrome with a mild Tourrette's Syndrome kick.
He was born with a developmental delay.
In his Apgar, he had poor muscle tone.
He has pronated ankles, flat feet, and was born with a wee extra thumb which they called a 'tag'.
They snipped it off before I could get the anaesthetic-filled soother in J's mouth.
He screamed for an hour - the wee thumb had a tiny nail, cartilage and everything.
Boy, I was so mad, I raged up and down that s-o-b doctor until J' fell asleep.
J' still has the little scar, which I've always told him is a 'gift from God'.
When he sees it, he remembers how special he (and He) is.
ASD kids of my generation grew up with the stigma of being any combination of 'obnoxious, cranky, cheeky, unruly, obstinate, stubborn, lazy, spoiled etc'.
Depression is a big part of who we are because of having to grow up/live in a world of constant unacceptance.
" I think there's a nap for that."
