The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Just saw this at a matinee, which was PACKED with baby boomers and others. A large theatre. Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel from Slum Dog.
This is a delightful, charming and thoughful movie, with beautiful shots of Jaipur, India. Not one car crash, gun shot or superhero. For you film buffs out there, this is not an edgey perfectly crafted film, but in my humble opionion well worth the experience. The producers of this movie are making buckets of $ and I cannot believe that others have not jumped on this demographic bandwagon.
Other suggestion? Waiting for Wes Andersons' Moonrise Kingdom. I think that I have the title right.

On my flight to London last week I ended up sitting next to Dev Patel. I was probably the only one in the cabin who had not seen this movie, since everyone on the plane kept complimenting him on it. Now I feel obligated to go check it out.

Steve, wrong, My friend and I have been going to the Lalemme in Encino for 30 years, and they opened a huge one in Woodland Hills 15 years ago, same as the one in Santa Monica, and closer than the city, and easier, The Galleria in Sherman Oaks (Cheesecake Factory) has Arclight (didn't spell that right)... my town is devoid of culture, total bedroom community, makes the Valley look like a city...well almost!! Calabasas is a groovy place, where I lived for 24 years, and has brought some great stuff along with it's growth...just a throw away from Woodland Hills and the Lalemme.

Yes, they all live out there...we built our home there 32 years ago, before it became famous, it is a great place, we got there due to bussing in L.A., they have their own school district. Now all the biggies live there, but I still have my old friends that are normal. The town has grown leaps and bounds due to Kardashians, Justin Bever, Britney spears. Gated and horse property and out of L.A. is the draw. Kardashians put it on the map.

They put in on the map and I thought they would have lowered property values, LOL!

You know I'm kidding (mostly) about the valley, Irene.

For those who haven't spent time in LA, we have a specific geo-social snobbery toward those who live on the valley side from those who live in LA proper or the westside.

Steve, I remember moving here in 1970 when the entire L.A. had no culture, or a threat of where the city actually was, lousey restaurants, and not much of anything, so we've grown, but compared to New York, we still have a long way to go...problem being you have to drive everywhere, so, get a bit lazy. The Valley still has no culture except for a good movie or two, I have eaten at a few good we restaurants, but we tend to entertain at home around the pool, bbq's, and such. The "celebrity" lifestyle takes over here, well, lets just say, there not college degreed, but look hard enough and you'll find a bit of everything.
I've settled since my San Francisco days,not saying that's a good thing...")
I had a chance but didn't move back, I'm comfortable with this easy lifestyle.

Oh my friend, when does a thread ever stay on topicsmiling smiley I am glad for the review as the ads make it look like a lot of fun. Since going to the theatre is not my thing it will go onto my Redbox listsmiling smiley

Yeah, I know. I guess I was just feeling left out. Hoping for a movie deal. But yes, of course, the thread going wacky is a good thing.

Redbox is a great idea. I forget about it since I married the cable guy and get all the stations for free. We do have a historical theater in our small city. I volunteer there and in return, a guest and I can watch the movie and get free drinks and popcorn. However, I don't think this movie is one that's on their radar. And I don't know if HBO, Showtime, or any of those will pick it up or when.

Silly curiosity...is there any dancing? I LOVE Bollywood style dancing and bellydancing. I've taken some bellydance classes and my favorite Zumba dances are often those. smiling smiley

Dancing, some Not as much as Slumdog. I do too. So joyous. Lucky you with the cable guy. would like to hear more re the historical theatre. What kind of films?

Almost always contemporary, second run movies. Sometimes they do play classics like It's A Wonderful Life every Christmas. Saw Wizard of Oz but it wasn't remastered. It wasn't The Palace running it but another charity group so the film quality wasn't great, which is too bad. I really was looking forward to seeing it on the big screen.

We also have a theater in Niagara Falls that runs $4 second run movies. They might run The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel as they have a larger audience market.

Are you in Buffalo? Or Rochester. I know about the Rochester theatres, Eastman and the Little as I recall.

Neither. I'm in a little city in Niagara County. East of Niagara Falls and mostly north with a dash of east from Buffalo. I think we're west of Rochester. Or northwest.

There's also a historical theater in North Tonawanda that's pretty. I've only been there once, maybe twice. I love that The Palace has balcony seating. Since volunteering, I always watch the movies from up there. It's private and darker as they keep some back lights on but dimmed downstairs, which drives me nuts. It's also a unique experience that people don't normally get to experience. I take my kids with me all the time and we all love sitting in the balcony to watch the movies.

The Palace has a website and they're on Facebook. I'm just not totally sure what the address is offhand. I believe there are photos of it on there. It's a beautiful old theater that they're in the process of restoring.

Are you in the area or just familiar with it?

Just familiar, friends in Rochester. Sounds fantastic. I am in Toledo, NW OH. They tore all of ours down years ago and they were beautiful, but I understand too expensive to maintain. Makes me sad though. We only have the major Rave complexes now w/ the stadium seating. No indie theatres, although I correct myself one old theatre had been renovated and they have some interesting, but expensive entertainments there. And a few classic movie nights, which I keep forgetting about. You are lucky.

Absolutely! Terrific, terrific movie. Another more offbeat film I liked from last year is "Beginners". Fantastic performances by Christopher Plummer, who won an Oscar (every bit well-deserved), as well as Ewan McGregor.
