Hot Hot Weather

But there are members of this forum that believe in global warming and by association they would be considered nuts. Regardless, preventing big business from poisoning the environment is crucial whether you believe humans cause global warming or not. I was calling out the fact that the article you put forth was written by someone for political purposes and his organization is as radical as the "alarmists" he talks about.

I heard something interesting the other night. We are all taught to believe government is bad, government screws up and never gets it right. We don't need no stinkin' regulations.

Remember there were times when government got it right. We no longer have child labor, women can vote, blacks don't have to ride in the back of the bus, many diseases that were killers a mere century ago have virtually been eradicated. It wasn't all that long ago the Bald Eagle was practically extinct, some lakes and rivers were once considered "dead" and the air over many of our industrialized cities was not fit to breathe.

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

yes, and those regulations were and still are necessary because big business will rarely change on their own. They need to be compelled to do so. Deregulation is rarely to the benefit of the public. Anyone who thinks no regulations are needed is in a fantasy world. I could point to 5 issues without even thinking for a minute with deregulated industries and relaxed regulations...

However I see protecting the environment(which I am widely for) and the global warming issue as two entirely different topics.

Climate change and protecting the environment are seperate issues and I think you are trying to combine them under the same banner, and that is where our disagreement is.

We agree on enviromental protection, but disagree on climate change : )

So Tech, do you have any empirical evidence or white papers that you would recommend in order to justify your position?
So glad to hear your reasonable views on deregulation, and agreeing w. Lisa, who so articulately made the point.
Still do not get how regs do not exactly relate to climate change. I.e. EPA stuff like all kinds of pollution control. If there is not a climate change issue, than why the regs? In other words, if you agree with most of the regs, that are based around the danger to the atmosphere than what? Hey, by the way, I do not want to discuss just to be right. I believe that this is a very important discussion and I am glad to be having it.
I don't even listen to Hannity, but I thought that was a very rude statement. Ad hominem attacks are totally unnecessary. "My way is right, my way is right....your way is stupid!" is not a way to get adherents. Facts and just the facts work. We can show how our opinions come from the facts without attacking. Even if statistics are a little off, I'd rather evaluate them than listen to the rants. Civility is a part of civilization.
Thanks for clarifying techman. It's heartening to know you have the same opinions regarding protecting the environment and big business being incapable and unwilling to regulate themselves!smiling smiley

We had a huge surprise yesterday. The forecasters had been saying we might have some pop up showers and not to expect it to do much good. Around 3 the clouds moved in and I could actually smell rain in the distance. Within an hour the temp dropped from 101 down to 93. Around 4:30 the wind kicked up for a 10 minutes or so and once it died down the rain came. I was totally expecting it to be fast and furious so it would all run off. Instead it was a really good rain and lasted about 2 1/2 hours.

It probably got down to about 75 and was beautiful sitting outside. Even when the sun came back later the temps only rose a few degrees.
Today we are back to triple digits and some of our famous humidity has returned. Long range is showing a cool front late Sunday with rain and temps back into the high 80's and low 90's, in other words, normal.

Oh, I love those days Lisa! Sitting outside on the porch while it rains; watching the lightning in the distance, hearing the thunder!

Despite being a total sunshine girl, the cool rain actually put a spring in my step! It was weird, because it seems like weeks since I'd even seen a cloudsmiling smiley

Lisa: I am so jealous and I can smell the rain. Unfortunately it is an illusion as it is dry as a bone. I would pay for a soaker, Everything goes south and north of here. What happened to cloud seeding? Guess that did not work. In the past I have always waited for summer with great anticipation. Now I am just waiting for fall.
Pop up severe thunderstorm here this afternoon. The guts of the storm only lasted 10 minutes, but the damage was extensive. Lots of huge trees down and therefore large power outages. All in 10 minutes. Never saw anything like it.
Ugh, can't take the heat with blazing sun anymore. It's been close to a week of over 100 degrees everyday. No rain, just hot sun. I want to go grocery shopping, except I've been out once today and don't feel like getting back into the heat. (Heat index is still 106).
lisams; do not know where you are, but the (cold )front is heading across the country and should be in your area if you are in midwest, Sunday or so. Then in the 80s all wk.
Weather update from the MS weather hotline.
Not light-weight or soft-sided coolers, but my best cooler is needed for grocery shops. It's record-breaking hot in the Carolinas.
I'm sitting at my kitchen table looking at the sunny yard while the rain is pouring down and the thunder is a booming. The cold front that is supposed to break the back of this heat wave arrived right on time. Here's wishing the rest of you lots of rain and no storms.

All I'm gonna say about the hot weather is that I am sick of it:-) Get in your car and almost burn your hands on the steering wheel, work up a sweat every time you get out of your car between route shops. Come home feeling depleted. All I can be thankful is that our air conditioning still works. Four friends of mine have had air conditioners die ($7000 to $10000) and then have to wait about a week to get an appt. with an AC installer or repair person. Also, at least I'm not living in VA,MD, or WV where many won't have power now for a few more days to a week and haven't had power since the storm hit the east cost!!

Too hot to debate global warming:-)
No rain in L.A., only over 100%, although today is very humid 85% which is unusual for L.A., as we have dry weather. Storms in Baja cause this, but
very uncomfortable. Difficult for me to complain as my kid lives in Chicago
where humidity abounds, never visit in summer, prefer winter to humidity.
I believe in Global warming as well as recyling, we all need to do our share
in keeping this world clean for the next generation. My complex recyle's, and
they are cutting out plastic bags in super markets, encouraging paper or bags used over and over, every bit helps.

Live consciously....
Still waiting on rain here. The 100+ heat broke some and now we just have lower 90s heat, but with the no one single cloud and full sunshine, it's still hot. We have a slight possibility of rain on Saturday, but that is the only day within the next 10 days that has a chance of rain. The grass is so dry it literally stabs your feet through your shoes. We have a burn ban here, however many neighbors still go on about their constitutional right to light fireworks before the 9th of July, so a few yards, parking lots, and garages have caught on fire.

The central air went out last Sat. Luckily maintenance fixed it by 7pm that evening. It was our hottest day though and around 4pm the temp. in my living room was 93. I've been swearing that I will never complain about cold weather again, but I know in Jan. I'm going to be singing a different tune.
Yes! Maybe some rain Sat/Sun. You are right. Watch this forum in Jan. The post will be cold cold weather. Although if it is like last winter we will not have much to complain about. But I'm sure we will find something.
Oh nuts, The meteoroligist here just pushed the likeliehood of precip down fron 70 to 40 percent.. Also said unless we get some tropical weather to come up from the south soon, we will have to wait for a seasonal change. I guess fall, Oct?.Also saying the worst widespread drought since the dust bowl 1930s. That is not going to help the economy.
That happened here too. It was supposed to rain last night and then into today.

Nada last night and the sun is shining right now.
Thunder in the distance which doesn't always mean we'll get rain but since I have a dog meteorologist and from the velocity of her panting and proximity to me (chin on my knee, tail curled directly behind the roller of my computer chair--I'm trapped,) looks like she'll be cutting off my power strip just before the storm hits:-)

This was not predicted by the weatherman, either.
Oh thank heavens.. I thought I was the only one with one of those big ole' babies!

Proud To Be A Soldier's Mom
Not even a drop this weekend. Climatologists now saying largest drought since the dust bowl (1930's)
We ended up getting a downpour for a few minutes and then that was it. The grass is still white straw and it didn't really do much as far as helping a drought. Temps are back up to the high 90s, low 100s.
Poured down rain for about an hour this afternoon. I feel so bad--almost guilty-- for everyone stuck in the drought and triple digit heat. Of course, all of this can or will change in a heartbeat. Wackiest weather I can remember in my 52 years!
Talked to my friend from Bulgaria last night and it was 100 yesterday, also in Greece and Spain. So it is wide spread.
Very good chance of major rain and thunderstorm am and pm. Let me know if you get any.!
