awful day for our family

hubby went to work this am at X salary. came home today at x salary -.8x, and added 2% comission. "economic woes." this is nuts. we were doing okay, nothing great, and certainly not for the cost of living here, but now were are 8K beneath the poverty line for here. this stinks.

I so understand that! My SO has had his hours cut from an average of 44 hrs per week to 'don't put in more than 32.' Against all fair labor practices he is being told to keep a separate sheet of hours required over 32 to get the work done and they will work out 'comp time or extra vacation days'. He is much too understanding about it because he recognizes it as an effort to keep him employed rather than laying him off. Meanwhile he is looking elsewhere and it certainly is an employer's market.
Yea, it sure is an employers market. They were like, "Well, look at it this way...you still have a job and benefits." but he would get more than 20% of his old pay in unemployment. I think they are just trying to get people to leave on their own, but all the co's here in his field are cutting staff and so there is no where to go.

It seems highly illegal what is being asked of your SO. Has he called the labor board to check?

He is one of those pig-headed people who complies because "They have always been so good to me I am willing to help." Like sure . . . when he needed to go in for back surgery earlier this year they allowed him to use his sick days and his vacation days for his recovery. That was a big favor? At least they did put him on 'Medical Leave' as they are required by law to do, but what they verbally told him was the time his job would be kept open was two weeks shorter than what was in the legal paperwork. But those are his decisions to make and interestingly I have noted he started job hunting on his computer and a few possible employers have called here already plus he has been out on a few interviews.
Lets hope something comes through for him, At least he seems to be getting wise to their tricks. We are trying to figure out all our options, which include at last resort relocation from HI to ?????

My husband lost his job of 26 years due to his company going bankrupt. Two months of knocking on doors and submitting online applications, and only one call for an interview, which didn't result in an offer. Thanks to networking, he took a job 2500 miles from home. We set him up in an apartment. He flies home once a month, twice if we can swing it. We're going to sit tight for 6 months or so and see what happens before selling, moving or making any major change. It stinks, but we feel fortunate.
Wow. 2500 miles plus a monthly airfare. That's tough. It must be difficult for all of you. At least he found a job, though. I know we either all have to go, or no one. We could never afford 2 apts. :-(

Times are bad and people are willing to do what ever it takes to hold down a job. The employers are quite aware of this and certainly take advantge of the situation. Hopefully at some point in the future things will get back to normal. I don't think that it will be anytime soon.
Yes, not for a few years, unfortunately, if we don't implode and crash and burn like the Soviet Union did a while back.

I just discovered this thread. I'm sorry for all the woes you all are mentioning. It just means we all have to work harder. "A little sleep, a little slumber. . . " and poverty rears its ugly head.
