Photo Quality Question

I have a little Nikon L26 camera that I use to take my pictures on site, i.e. business verifications and on site inspections. I have no problem with the quality of the pictures except for when I have to get a shot of a locking door. If the door know is silver or gold colored, the glare always produces a crumby picture that looks like I moved so it isn't as sharp and clear as I would like. How do you overcome that? Is there a setting in the Nikon that I could change?

Sometimes I don't take a direct angle shot. I go off centered a bit and so far it works.
If you can get away without using a flash, you can adjust the colour balance later. If you must use a flash because it is too dark. a sheet of paper over the flash on your camera will diffuse the light.
