A matter of "style"

Here's an essay from the chronicle of higher education about people who love words, how they become upset by incorrect usage of them. Worth a look, IMHO, YMMV.

I know this is an old post, but I just saw it and I really liked the article, so I thought it would be worth a *bump*. It makes me crazy when different companies want specific punctuation and grammar when I know there are different options and it's not my writing style. It's hard to remember exactly what they want sometimes-and I wish I could send them this article! smiling smiley
Do/don't refer to employee by name. Do/don't describe ethnicity. Do/don't use present/past tense. Do/don't time in minutes/seconds. Do/don't comment objectively. My all-time puzzler "Please use standard English next time".
I especially love the latter when it was written in less than standard English...

I recently received two different ones:
"don't forget to capitalize associate" ???
and "do not use contractions in your narrative".
Now, I'm smart..but math and science smart and for the life of me, can't remember what a contraction is (blush). Dont laugh..im vulnerable. I know, I could just look it up.. sad smiley

Well, I am a product of the WA school system....
Don't instead of Do not

Guess I should've (should have) watched Schoolhouse Rock more...
Dually noted...
