10 Genius Ways to Save Big When Shopping at Publix

Here at ALL YOU, we know that your favorite supermarket is more than just a place to pick up groceries. Whether they have amazing produce, let you stack coupons or hire friendly cashiers, there’s a reason why you shop where you do. We’re highlighting different grocery stores (and the readers who shop there) in our new Why I Love My Grocery Store series. Interested in being featured? Join Reality Checker Central and head to our Smart Shopping campaign to tell us where you shop and how you save.

This week, we chatted with Davionne Dobson, an ALL YOU Reality Checker and Publix shopper originally from Miami (“where my love for Publix began!”), now living in Tucker, Ga. Davionne started couponing after becoming a full-time caregiver for her mother, a breast cancer survivor. “She’s the inspiration behind all I’ve learned in terms of smart shopping,” Davionne says. Here are ten of her best tips for saving money at Publix:

1. Stay plugged in. “I follow different coupon blogs so I know exactly when to shop and what to shop for,” Davionne explains. A few of her favorites: truecouponing.com, couponmom.com and southernsavers.com. “The pre-sale alerts they share help me plan ahead for each shopping trip and stick to my family’s super-duper tight budget.”

2. Download the right apps. Davionne uses Favado (“it’s a lifesaver, especially when you’re out on the road and haven’t done any comparison homework”) and the Publix shopping app (“handy for when you’re in-store and need to load digital coupons to your membership card”). To earn extra cash back for her purchases, she uses Shopmium, Ibotta and Checkout 51. “There are lots of hidden treasures available on these apps if you take the time to find them,” she says.

3. Register for mailed coupon booklets. “Sign up for stockingspree.com and bestmealsathome.com,” Davionne says. “These subscriptions will provide you with valuable mailed coupon booklets and printable coupons that can only be redeemed at Publix.”

4. Know your local competitors. Because Publix accepts competitor coupons from other grocery stores, do your research ahead of time to source these additional savings. “To my friends in Florida, Target and Winn-Dixie will be your best friends,” Davionne says. “While you can’t stack competitor coupons with Publix and manufacturer coupons, you can stack the one or the other. The competitors differ from store to store, usually within a five mile radius. So if you shop at more than one Publix, know their different competitors—you will be a much richer camper!”

5. Go BOGO. Publix is famous for their BOGO (buy one get one) deals, so use them to your advantage. “Even if you don’t shop for anything other than BOGOs, you will have won big with just these deals alone,” Davionne says. And if you have additional manufacturer or store coupons, your out of pocket expenses will be even lower: “A sale at Publix is good. The same sale with BOGOs is great. But BOGOs and coupons on top of the sale and manufacturer coupons? Jackpot!”

I love when people think this is a forum about shopping.

I'm a Harris Teeter and Lowe's girl myself, with a bit of Whole Foods thrown in.

Harris Teeter and Lowe's double coupons everyday, plus have Super Double or Triple coupon events once a month. They also allow you to "stack" digital coupons with paper coupons.

How does one person have 3 posts, but when you click on "see all posts" only one shows up? Is that because the other 2 were removed?

Yes. Normally that is a good indication they only post spam.

ALL YOU is a website about shopping. It is spam. I flagged it a couple of days ago noting the 3 posts but only 1 showing. Apparently the mods think this is a useful post or not spammy enough.

ALL YOU is also a magazine.

Either way it's just SPAM. The same stupid article was on AOL news earlier this week. IDK why someone would post this crap here and disappear unless it's just to get more hits on their website.

I didn't know it was a magazine. I googled ALL YOU and it directed me to a website.

Know how to really save money at Publix? Sign up to be a shopper and get a $18 minimum to shop there! ($10 reimbursement, $8 minimum shop fee.)
I don't subscribe to All You anymore, but they always had good coupons in the magazine. It was definitely the best magazine by far for coupons.

I guess the original post could be considered spam because it's not from a regular poster.

However, it does have some great information. I don't have a Publix nearby, but my local grocery used to take competitors' coupons. I was able to save well over $500 a year just on the competitors' coupons (not counting manufacturers' coupons, printables, etc.) until they discontinued it. It's worth asking your grocery store if they'll accept competitors' coupons.

It's considered Spam because they are using someone else's forum for free advertising.

Stepanuk, you can get a free 1 year subscription to All You on RecycleBank... you just do a couple "green" pledges to earn points, like "I will shut off the water when I brush my teeth, then turn it back on to rinse" and watch a few videos on conservation. Or link your trash/recycling account to it, and earn points for recycling. I was surprised, when I signed up, to realize that I'd already earned over $75 in points and hadn't even known it, just because my recycling company was already a participant with RecycleBank.

That's the only way we do magazine subscriptions. We currently subscribe to Field & Stream, All You, Fine Woodworking, and Better Homes & Gardens. All free through Recyclebank points. You can use it for giftcards and products too, but we do it for magazines and giftcards.

The best deal I have ever gotten from Publix was *WAY* better than a shop fee there.

Publix has what they call "The Publix Promise." If an item rings up for the wrong price at the register, you get the item FREE!

I went on a thursday morning when they first opened up with the new flier taking effect. This was right before a holiday and they had put out a good selection of huge rib roasts that were marked at the wrong price!

I went through them and picked out the largest one in the display. ($42) When I asked for them to honor the Publix promise at the checkout, the store manager called the meat manager to the front of the store to show him what he just gave away before he turned the key and removed it from my bill. I think the meat manager had a bad day from the expression on the store managers face.

I took it home and boned it out into Ribeye steaks and vac sealed them in the freezer.
Some of the things I have gotten for free over the years with the Publix Promise are mozzarella cheese, sausage, apples, cat food, and my personal fave- Condoms!
