GMOs...Your Opinion?

What do you think of genetically modified organisms and why?

I'm for them for many reasons, but I'll give my top 3:

1. Reduced pesticides - some plants have natural pesticides. Those genes can be be spliced into organisms that lack this. Over time, they grow to resist pests. This is significant for industrial growers and has a widespread impact for air, water and waste.

2. Hearty plants - strong plants can withstand more extreme temperatures, low light and water, and pummeling (can't think of the scientific word). This results in longer storage and transportation times. This allows produce to be sent to areas that previously would not have access, and a lower replacement rate fr those who do have access.

3. If a virus or some other epic incident wipes out an entire species of plant, genetic modification can bring them back into existence.

So what are your thoughts?

It has been proven in lab tests that it causes organ damage in animals. In recent years we have seen dramatic increases in chronic illnesses in humans. That is why you should not change God's creation, if you do, it will become an abomination and wreak havoc upon society.

I'm against them because there is still a lot of debate on whether they are causing heavier use of pesticides and herbicides along with the ongoing research into Roundup killing bees and butterflies. Not to mention many organic heirloom varieties of vegetables just taste better. How we handle our food directly impacts how it affects us such as studies showing cows, chickens and pigs allowed to eat what they should are significantly more healthful and tastier to boot. I will also admit that after finding out studies indicating how bad trans fats are for us was actually known as far back as the 1960's and hidden from the general public for over 30 years, I'm not inclined to trust agribusiness and their claims.

This is a misconcieved notion and spreading this misinformation is immoral.

GMO crops are designed to with stand Roundup, a herbicide which is sold by Monsanto, a leader in GMOs. Farmers heavily use this herbicide, but they have to increase it's strength year after year as weeds and bugs have grown resistant to the herbicide. As excess herbicides leak into underground water sources, it is polluting our environment. Note that Monstanto is a large corporation so they're mainly interested in profits.

Here's something that may be a fun debate topic for your next cocktail party. Currently there is a lot of discussion about the world's wealth being concentrated into fewer and fewer hands. It might make one wonder the result if the basics such as food and water were similarly controlled by a small group of people or companies.

Nature modifies organisms. A plant thrives or dies because it has adapted. Nature does not create tomatoes that are "designed" to be shipped across the country without bruising in transit. They have no flavor, but they sure look nice. I would rather not have a vegetable the has frog or jellyfish DNA. Other countries make anything which contains GMO's to be clearly labeled as such.

Great, now I'm thinking about Triffids, that's going to make for some sweet dreams.
I support voluntary labeling. That way, those who want to purchase goods based on a lower price can choose GMO while those who want to purchase based on quality can choose non-GMO. Or any combination thereof. The problem lies with pollen drift.

I shop at Whole Foods only, except for when I do my mystery shops. I buy strictly in the natural and GMO free aisles.

What's a Triffid?

My preference would be mandatory labeling first, voluntary labeling second. Consumers have a right to know what is in their food and the opportunity to vote with their pocketbook. I remember when items like organics, cage free, etc., were always crazy expensive. Because of consumer demand the prices are getting much closer.

Lisa, you are right. The price gap is closing, but it's still wide.

I'm always on the lookout for 4 pound whole chickens because they fit perfectly in my crock pot.

Farmers' Market - $18 (GMO free, certified organic)
Aldi - $4 (GMO free)
Kroger - $5 (brined)

Lol, I googled Triffid last night after reading your post and that's where I landed. Now I have to go see if my library has a copy of "Day of the Triffids"
Honny, I am fortunate to live in an area with a wealth of grocery options from great local chains who have been pressured by the arrival ten years ago of Trader Joe's to carry many more options to locally owned butcher shops, ethnic grocery stores and a wide variety of farmer's markets, including one in the city that is over 230 years old. It cracks me up how the Midwest is considered by some to be a wasteland. St. Louis in particular is quite foodie oriented.

Lisa, I lived most of my adult life in Los Angeles. I frequented the farmers markets for produce, grains and fish, and a local butcher for meats. Trader Joe's is headquartered outside of LA, so they had a significant presence in the Southland.

Then I moved to Maryland. Food prices were moon high and TJ's was a very bad joke.

I used to live in Kansas. That's where I learned to appreciate steak!

Also GMOs remind me of the show Full Metal Alchemist. Where the protagonists of the series, brothers Ed and Al, tamper with life and try to resurrect their mother from the dead. By committing one of the biggest taboos in the world of alchemy, It resulted in an abomination: a homunculi who feeds on philosopher stones(powerful red stones created by the killing and transmuting the souls of large populations). In addition, it caused Al to lose his body and thus Ed used soul transmutation to fused Al's soul with a suit of armor. After understanding the truth about philosopher stones and after a long journey attempting in getting their mom back and Al's body back, Ed understands that he can't fix everything with Alchemy and he gives up his alchemy abilities in exchange for his brother's body back. Nothing ever good comes from playing God.

I am not for GMOs.GMOs are responsible for tumors in lab rats.I believe GMOs create allergies and cause weight gain and other bad things.Farmers have sued Monsanto about contaminating their crops with GMO seeds.Monsanto really needs to be run out of town on a rail.
