The amount of water required to make 1 burger.

So the water needed to make one 1/3 lb burger patty, from growing the cattle's feed/drinking water to the processing of the meat, is roughly 700 gallons of water. 1 pound of beef requires 1,800 gallons of water. According to some calculations that I've done, a 1/3 lb patty is equivalent to keeping the shower on for 5-6 hours. (2 gallons/min that a shower uses) To put it in perspective, the average household of 4 uses 400 gallons of water a day(https://www3.epa.gov/watersense/pubs/indoor.html) .

I learned about this a while ago and thought it was pretty interesting. Can the environment sustain the huge consumption of water required in the meat industry? Even though learning this, it hasn't changed my eating habits, however, it might change yours.

The 100 gallons of water reference is over how many days, weeks, months? Is there a teenage girl in the household? That 100 gallons would be about 2 showers for them. A load of wash is a huge water guzzler too.
I wonder how many gallons a tomato plant "officially" takes. We are having a very hot stretch and I am watering 1/2 gallon per plant daily. I do have 2 huge rain water barrels, so I am cost effective/ ecologically friendly that way at least.
The problem with the math is that you aren't using an entire bull to make that 1/3# burger.

I assumed the 1800 gallons would be multiplied by the weight of the cow. It has been so long since I've read any articles, but if memory serves the water is also not just what the animal drinks, it would include everything used from birth through the time it hits your plate.

It is generally known and accepted cattle for beef consumption is by far the worst for the environment. Reducing consumption helps, but IMO cutting back by individuals won't be able to keep up with the waste via the FF industry. Something I heard years ago disturbed me. At least at that time, cattle raised for food were not always the same as those raised for leather. Another case of waste. Ideally we should be doing as our ancestors and utilizing every part of each animal.
