bruise remedies

I smacked my shin good while I was cutting the grass today. Other than ice and elevating the area is there anything else I can do to prevent a huge bruise? Any herbal or home remedies?

The only thing I saw researching online was something called bromelain. My spelling could be wrong. It's a supplement derived from pineapple. Otherwise it was the cold compresses, elevation, avoid alcohol and pain killers that could thin the blood.

Haven't used this site before, but here's what they recommend:
Raw or roasted onions cut in half can also be effective against bruises. For even more effectiveness, dip the onion in apple cider vinegar before rubbing the onion on the bruised area.
Can't hurt, right? Write back if you try it!
Cucumbers are healing, brings down swelling.

Chris, the problem with that "remedy" is you are never supposed to rub a bruised area.

If you put a matching one on the other shin, people might not notice due to symmetry.....

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've been icing my shin sporadically, but also took a walk to finish off my 10,000 steps for the day. Not sure if that will make things better or worse :-)

Sounds crazy, .. Use chapstick and rub it over it several times a day. Use peppermint and clove oil too if you have it.
Unless you have a side gig as a leg model I wouldn't worry about it. ;-)
Drink Turmeric tea. It will help with decreasing the pain and inflammation. smiling smiley

Arnica gel or oil works for me every time.

Calendula salves or arnica salves will get rid of bruises.
Wow! I had no idea there were so many options! When I woke up on Saturday I was ecstatic to see that (although there was a tender area about 4" wide and 2" tall) where I whacked my shin you couldn't see a bruise unless you were really looking for it.

Don't get too happy. Not to be a downer, but it's probably a deep bruise (bone bruise) that might take a week to 10 days to surface...lovely green and piurple colors.
No wine?

I'd rather have the bruise! Wear like a badge of honor, and tell a good story.
