The good old days and what I miss as a 60 yr. old woman.

Sesame street songs are huge. I love Rubber Ducky & I Love Trash; those 2 never get old.
Can't spell it, but manamana rocks my world, old version.

There are days, when babysitting 3 (2 in diapers) small children seemed like the hardest thing I did all day. Never occurred to me when I was all of 13, babysitting the family across the street would be the best job and relatively speaking the easiest.
Making a PB/Fluff/Banana sandwich and doing the dishes, was the easiest thing in my day. All for $1 an hour.

edited because I will admit, I almost miss washing the dishes.

I did a ton of babysitting as a teen. I really liked it after the kids went to sleep and I could do my homework while watching Saturday Night Live. My parents never let me do homework with the TV on.
OP....I do not (DO NOT) miss washing the dishes, I love cooking, but hate cleaning up, always forget to put my gloves on, and usually chip a nail....rather be working...yep!!

I miss good ol' common sense.

*reaches for the nearest Mark Twain*

What does common sense have to do with liking or not liking doing dishes...just askin, and trying to make sense out of above post. Where is Mark Twain when you need him...smiling smiley

MA Smith, I am definitely in your age group although I only claim to be thirty. Those are also my favorite songs from SS. Just had the great experience of taking my grands to see Sesame Street Live, which I also took their mommy to see when she was four. You must go if you get the chance!
I only was allowed to babysit for my big sister and wasn't allowed to take pay, she paid me with wacky socks! I used to love if she stayed out late because then she would get me some wacky toe socks! I wonder if any shops pay in wacky socks, not the cheap, printed ones they have today, the really nice ones from the early seventies!

And, no I don't do dishes. The only perk from breaking my back a few years ago is that I can't really lean over the sink to do dishes!
You got $1/hr babysitting?? I think I maxed out at 75 cents.

I miss scrounging around in my bug trying to find some change to buy a couple gallons of gas.
Yep mostly I got 50 cents an hour. But I loved getting that little extra income. I started when I was 10 (people just across the street) the kid slept the whole time. Probably a good thing since I had no clue how to change a diaper so I would have had to call Mom to come running over. Did anyone start younger than 10?

What's done is done. An egg cracked cannot be cured.
There are 3 kinds of lies. Lies, Damn lies, and statistics.
I know they are, (obviously), 1.00 ...I'm talking about today, I'd watch a cute baby for a few hours for 8 bucks,
and give him back....price's went up unlike our industry.

Live consciously....
I would not watch a cute baby for $8! They are only cute when someone else is holding them, feeding them, and changing their diapers. Or when they are sleeping.
I miss kids playing outside until dark, folks talking on the front porch, board games and dominos, ice cold beer after hauling hay, shaking hands meant keeping your word, people talking to each other instead of staring at a cell phone, the ability to agree to disagree and not attempt to ruin the lives of anyone who does not agree with another persons opinions, and many other things. Most of those things still exist, but on a much smaller scale. I'm not talking about the forum. Social media has many pros, but sometimes I think the cons far outnumber the pros.

You may be right on this one...smiling smiley

LOL! I remember a few incidents where relatives insisted that they should pay me for babysitting their children. In order to fend off WW3, I took the money. But it was not necessary for them to pay me for having fun and playing with my nieces and nephews. That was like a whole other world, all those years ago. Now, their children are growing up in a very different world. The others have summarized that nicely.

Babysitting was .50 h back in my day. Other girls were going to .75 after midnight, I didn't and got all the work!! My most exciting, was watching the premier of the Mary Tyler Moore, IN COLOR!! Oh man, I was sooo stoked!! Bragged and bragged to my Mom.
Sunday night was the only school night we stayed up until 8:30 so we could watch Bonanza in black and white on a 18" TV with rabbit ears. Good times, lol.
Slightly off topic, but as a fifty year old woman who just returned from a vacation, I miss my stamina and strength. I realize, the older I get, the more money it might cost me to travel. Dragging your own luggage through NYC a few blocks to get on a train requires strength. Walking through European old towns with cobblestone walkways is hard on the knees and back. Walking miles between attractions is convenient right now for me, but not always for my traveling companions.

So, I miss my flexibility and strength from my younger days, and will be mindful to try and maintain as much as I can. Or else I'm going to need to be very rich to pay people to carry my luggage everywhere!

Evaluating and mailing packages since 1994
RobinMarie, your post made me chuckle and picture how an old lady might work out with luggage. Maybe our knees do not plie, exactly, but we can do a little something. We can lift the extension handles up and down and work our arms. We can hoist our legs to the top of the lifted luggage handle and stretch, as if we were at barre. We can do a modified plie. Fingertips on top of luggage handle, and, "plie"... and, "plie"... and, "plie"...

Or, not.

Slightly off topic here, but, this is exactly what I used to help my at-the-time 20 month old granddaughter (turns 2 next month!) grasp the concept of "up"/"down"!! She had fun lifting the handle up and down, and really did get to understand the concept....and I got my arm workout....ha ha!!!

My knees are shot. (not enough for surgery) Tonight, I put some items in my frig that has a freezer on top. It was all I could do to get myself upright. Physically, I'm strong, my knees on the other hand have been an issue all of my life. & they are the bane of my existence lately.

I started for my brother's kids at 11...they never paid me, but I babysat for a customer of my dad's, and only charged 25 cents an hour...(this was in the 50's)....By high school I had several jobs, and none of them paid by the hour...they'd come home from a night on the town and just hand me a wad of cash...then the husband would drive me home....(dui's weren't enforced as much back then.) Thankfully, we never got in an accident...(one of the dad's was a cop, but he wasn't drinking)....I had a good thing going, and seldom had any newborns except for relatives to sit for...
Too bad the shop pay hasn't risen any since I stopped a few years back for physical reasons...food prices have shot up, but shoppers pay doesn't go anywhere....too bad...
Allow me to add going for a huge bag of fresh-popped pop corn at a market in the summer, and having a large dish of vanilla ice cream - also in the summer....lol...no wonder I was overweight as a kid...oooooh but that popcorn was so darn good!
What I miss as a 60 year old + woman isn't babysitting.....rather, friends that have gotten ill, and I've lost to health I miss good manners. I miss my daughter as 20 years ago we used travel together and see much more of one another, her career has taken over (I'm happy about it), and her travels with friends and for the Univ. she works for takes her far away. Just returned from Thailand. I'm happy for having learned the computer, as she sends links of jobs she does and I can see and hear her seminars, last one for The New York Times, where she and an Associate spoke to staff about Emotional Intelligence....their writing an article about it, I'm happy I keep up with the times, but miss my music and thankful i can still listen to it, brings great pleasure. Miss having Grandkids (I think), not sure about that one, but it would be sweet. Enjoy my time without anyone telling me what to do, fun to come and go...the spirit always remains, I feel 40, figure that out....still enjoying life but with a new awareness.....

What I miss most is being able to eat anything I want....age has taken that away, poor body says, no sugar, less carbs, less red meat, no milk, but now drink Almond or Cashew milk and like it better, everything made fresh, hardly any packaged frozen foods, too much sodium....veggies and fresh fruit work...I had a free pass when younger, everything caught up.

Understand your pain. A large pizza with double toppings was mine and only mine.
Don't even think you might get a nibble.

I can figure out how to deal with the big belly. Don't have a clue of how many towels I own for the night sweats and hot flashes.

My biggest complaint with the big M is no sleep. I can be deep, stuff happens & I'm up for 72 hours. It would be fine if I could concentrate. I have AR issues with my crafts and no sleep begets frogging or picking out stitches.

I sleep like a baby.//7 to 8 hours every night, sometimes a 20 minute nap. I've figured out the food, thing and am o.k. with it now but miss real ice cream and a few things...could be worse. Couldn't live without my sleep, I have a way of putting stress away, but miss my daughter and holidays are tough. Never had night sweats....anyway life has it's challenges...as I always say, "When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping".

I escaped hot flashes but I was getting really moody there for awhile. Things seem to have settled down in that area. MA, if you can't sleep, try diphenhydramine (generic Benedryl). You can buy a bottle of 24 at the Dollar tree for a buck. Just take 1, not 2. It's for allergies but it makes you sleepy. It's the active ingredient in Zquil. The millennials just don't know that and pay more money for the Zquil. Anyway, it won't make you groggy the next day but generally will make you sleepy within an hour or two after taking it. And if you have allergies there's that bonus. Of course you need to check with your doctor if you are on any other medications to make sure that there are no contraindications. I think some heart medications or cholesterol meds might be a no no with it, not sure.

I use the purple stuff from Walgreens. It's the part of Benadrlyl that makes you drowsy without the antihistamines.

Hot flashes, I could set my clock when they would hit. I haven't had bad ones for years. Well until this week. They are the nasty ones, last too long and start migraines..

I started the month off with a cold. Haven't had knock you off your feet cold since August 2002. This one only lasted 3 days, if you don't count the coughing factor. That's gone on all month.

Two days ago , I started the rip the sheets off the bed hot flashes. Blasting the shower on cold , not working. Towels are piled on the bed. Animals are getting kicked off the bed. Migraine is trying to push in.

I get it. being able to bring life in the world, girls may have to put up with garbage once a month. What I don't understand is why, when we girls can't make babies anymore, why we are still punished., I'd almost go back to the 7 days of massive pain as a trade off for the new stuff that goes on every single day & every night.

Well that just plain out sucks. I am so sorry to hear that you have to go through it. For the cold, have you ever tried that stuff Airborne? It was invented by a grade school teacher to ward off colds and flu viruses. My husband and I swear by it for kicking out crud from your lungs and sinuses. It's got lots of vitamin C, zinc, Echinacea, etc. to help bolster your immune system. As far as the rest of that crap goes...well...good luck.
