I Need Dirt

A coworker gave me a snippet of his office plant. I put it in a cup with water and it has roots. I want to pot it. The garden stores only seem to have big bags. I need a few handfuls. I take the train to work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks adobe!! I always forget about the dollar store.

Oh, at first glance at your title heading, I thought you meant, I need dirt on someone. Ha-ha.
catgranny, I was being a bit DavePi-ish!

FrugalCat, I don't have a green thumb, so when my philodendron clipping grew a big root, I got excited. I bought the pot a few weeks ago, but everyplace I looked either sold big bags of soil (thank you for the clarification) or wanted an astronomical amount of money for organic soil. I thought about digging up the park, neighbor's yard, etc., where the free stuff is, but figured I would ask here. adobe gave me the perfect answer.

Yeah, you don't want regular dirt...might be insect eggs and weed seeds in it, and possible toxins, yuk. I too remember seeing small bags of soil at Dollar Tree.
Not so sure that dirt is free either. The bank holds a hefty mortgage on my pile of "dirt" -- LOL!

My first thought was dog poo.

That's organic fertilizer.

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

Honny, you can go to places like Aldi's or Ace Hardware and purchase potting soil for something ridiculously low in price. The larger stores such as Home Depot or Lowe's will have them higher. While Aldi's is a grocery store, you'd be surprised at what they have in the sections that are located within the middle of the store.
I love Aldi's. That is where I bought my mattress, in the middle aisle! They would only have soil if it was a weekly special.

Thanks for the tip! Are the grounds fresh or used?

True, but I would be transporting it to work on the train.

The grounds are right after I make my fresh coffee (used).
The plummer said not to put coffee grounds down the disposal, so I found a new use, and it works.

Thanks Irene. I use k-cups at work. I can use the grounds as fertilizer. How often do you use them?

When I worked in Monrovia, a sewer inspector cam to the plant trying to trace coffee grounds in the sewer lines.

I use them every morning after making coffee, and then watering potted plants, mine are not put in the ground.

I put the used coffee grinds in front yard and sometimes in my backyard. I've got fruit trees in the back yard and it helps them. My grown kids informed me that when we had the kitchen pipes cleared by a plumber, the plumber explained not to put egg shells or coffee grinds through the garbage disposal since the egg shells will damage the pipes or the coffee grinds will clog up the drain pipes. Now then, what is the point of having the garbage disposal if you can't put egg shells, coffee grinds or parts of fruits/veggies that we cant' consume?
catgranny, I think it's very small items that are already ground up. They do more harm than good, I guess. Nothing has to go to waste. There is always a way to reuse something. The items you named would make great compost.
