I think the person who doesn't replace the toilet paper roll has to clean the bathroom for a month....

Hmm, I typically don't replace, because I feel like it's the employee's job. Is this thinking wayyy off base and culturally ignorant of me? sad smiley
Hahahahaha! Love the topic, Jill. And it's not whether you replace the roll, the real question is if you faced it the right direction.

Completely agree! It has to roll over the top smiling smiley

But...replacing the roll is a big issue in my house with 3 teens....

It's the employee's job if you have people to clean your house, lucky duck smiling smiley

But at my house, I feel like it should be the job of whoever uses the last frayed piece that is glued to the almost-empty roll.
I thought we were talking about restaurants, lol. That was the subject matter in the thread this thread got spun off into.
Should the last person in the kitchen do the cleanup? I do everything as I'm always the last person in any room.

I have always seen posts as a conversation and enjoy when they meander all over the place. I do not think the person who begins a thread "owns" it. The rules of the forum must be followed, not our personal preferences.

Who ever uses up the toilet paper puts on the new roll. I do not care which way it is hung. My husband cares, but for the life of me I can not remember that meaningless detail, so I stand there contemplating which way it should go. Then think well, 50% chance of getting it right and just put it on. Either I have been getting it right or he has given up. Haven't heard about it in a long time. I am also old enough to remember great debates about it in Ann Landers column. LOL

I am also not that interested in toothpaste caps or how the toothpaste is squeezed. We each have our own toothpaste now. Simple marriage saver. lol

Drinking water from a cup intended for POP (what is soda? lol) is stealing. But I have the opposite problem. I hate pop. When I am required to order pop - because it must be on the bill and I have to say something about the carbonation, I put in a small amount and when that is gone I return to the machine and get water. I am always glad when I don't have to order a drink. I just drink my own water when I am in the car.

Smoking is bad. Inside any room even worse!

A huge factor when deciding to put the TP on the roll over or under is whether you have cats in your household. If you do, under is a must. Unless of course you like cleaning up miles of toilet paper strewn around the housewinking smiley

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

LOL the cat has never done that!

I agree. I have to assume that when the original toilet paper roll patent was granted in the 1880's, I think, house cats were a lot less common. But in the absence of house cats, the right way is definitely over the top! lol

In our house the bathroom door stays shut. The furballs get to explore only when a hoo man is in there.
@prince,

I also don't like pop very much....and I call it "pop," too, most of the time lol
I can't believe you turned this into a topic.

Husband and 1 stepson would leave the cap off of the toothpaste. It drove me nuts. I started buying the toothpaste with the flip cap.

If you have paper towels in the kitchen and they hang horizontally under the cabinet, does the TP directional role rule apply?

I respect that opinion. Agree that no one "owns" a thread and certainly a forum's rules supercede the desires of those participating in it, prince.

The main counter-argument for why it would be a good idea (at least, sometimes) to keep threads on track (whether by official moderation or friendly, peer reminder) is simply that they are professional resources. I'm part of numerous academic, religious, and job forums, and there are many of them (not all) that moderate in this way, because so many people come in there to seek help, perspective, and advice on topics that commonly come up for other professionals or students in the group.

If someone, for example, wanted to know the best timing to do a medical "volunteer-ship" in undergrad for pre-med or, say, wanted to know the culture found at Cornell Law School for minority students, and there was an existing thread on that, they'd be disserviced by forum members who took the conversation in a lengthy and heavily unrelated direction. That's why these forums separate out "Social/General Chat" sections and more professionally-specific types of sections for posting. The social sections aren't moderated in this way and anything goes (not just with topics, but even behavioral expectations, where people can "fight" sadly), whereas the professional sections do have discussion corralled back on topic (by the moderation team) to keep the forum a neat & tidy helpful tool/resource for students and professionals in the field.

That's where I was coming from with my logic and past experiences. But, to be critical of my own thread in question, the topic was more of a "rant" thread, so it was not the best example of a thread that would benefit the most from on-topic discussion. smiling smiley

As for "owning" a thread, I think that might be a bit too strong of a way of putting it. It's more that at certain forums, people who start the thread tend to direct the discussion and there is a kind of unspoken leeway given to the thread starter as to which direction he or she may wish to go.**** It's not fixed in stone and there is some grey area to it, but there's sometimes an unspoken understanding of this. At Physics Forums, this very specific "problem" was actually the co-topic of a thread debate not too long ago (i.e., how much leeway is there for a thread starter to direct discussion). I probably should not have brought the original point up, because I was actually thinking of a different type of dynamic where that might apply and this issue of "directing thread discussion" isn't so much an issue here at MSF. I think I was mentally confusing some things. But, I just brought it up again as a point of reference for how some forum dynamics are elsewhere. What is the norm in one place, I realize, is not necessarily at all even considered at another place. So, we have to learn each forum's dynamics, which is what I'm trying to do here.

****And that's why I acted the way that I did in this forum. I think I had certain expectations of how things might/should go, but did not take into account different culture and dynamics.

I enjoy posts that meander. I enjoy posts that stay on topic. There are times when a post goes off topic and I'm really bothered because I wanted to talk about the topic. I guess I just go with the flow however that may be....

I understand, @shoptastic, where you're coming from and that's why I splintered off with two threads. The first was to just answer a question that someone asked me that would have been lengthy and VERY FAR off topic. I didn't want to answer the question/have any discussion like that within the thread, so I moved it to another...and that other thread was really just about what was going on in that very moment within your thread...didn't have to do with the major amount of "off topic" that was going on, which was noted....

So I made another thread smiling smiley

I don't care what people do with the thread.

I just tried to think of things that could be sorta funny and facilitate discussion between members. I really like getting to know all of you here.

But, to answer some other posts on this particular thread, now...here goes:

@HonnyBrown... my teens leave the caps off their toothpaste. Even the FLIP TOP caps come off. SMH. I don't understand them at all. And they waste so much toothpaste that way...it gets hard and covers the opening. And they squeeze any which way. It sometimes drives me nuts, too, because I'm a pretty frugal person. I replace the lid all the time and I even practice the "Squeeze from the bottom and flatten it as you go up...." lol. I will even lay the toothpaste down on the counter and squeeze every bit out. I'm the same with liquids (cut my container of lotion open and dip fingers in when it's too low to be pumped or squeezed out...etc)

@eveb...VERY good question! I think paper towels hanging horizontally still apply to the over the top rule smiling smiley But sometimes it's easier...with wet hands...to reach UNDER the roll....what a conundrum! smiling smiley

@Irene_L.A., me too! I'm last in a room and always grab the trash, dishes, etc that everyone else leaves behind. I think it's just a matter of people who like things super clean (I do) and people who are okay with varying degrees of disarray...maybe?? IDK. I just know that my own persona theory about my "stuff" in my house is that I always want it to look as good/new as possible and to last as long as possible. Things don't look good and stay intact when they are laying on the floor, etc. And dishes left with food on them are gross and they attract bugs, etc. So....I just do it. Meh. Maybe I'm just "Setting a good example" and one day these munchkins in the house will copy me....

Thank you all for responding. I really like coming here to chat with you all.
And yet again, the reason we are still in the other thread is for a second time this thread is not addressing the actual issue we were discussing there. And the answer to the toilet paper question is "However my wife tells me to do it" thank you very much.

Well, I just started this thread as a sort of funny thing, to talk about the moral implications of things...and to include the one with the soda/water cup thing, as listed in the title of this

If anyone wants to talk about that (the issue that was derailing the other thread; and that is a blip in this thread), go right ahead

Or someone can start another post to talk about that, in a more specific manner.
@Jill_L...I agree, my daughter was raised in a very clean (put stuff away) atmosphere, with us not only setting an example but just wanting our nice home to reflect us, with my ex being super neat. What happened was she grew up and out does us, when I visit, everything has a place or she doesn't want it, on the verge of OCD, but not. I now feel like I'm never neat enough, as in my home, I have my messy places like where I work and the garage, but dishes left over is a no no, and TP has to be over not under, and my living room and dining has to be perfect, but the family room where I work, is another story...shall I start a messy thread?

Funny story, I shared a room with my 9 yr, older sister growing up who was a neat freak, remembering putting a blouse on the chair, she came home opened the window and threw my clothes into the yard....when she married at 20, happiest day of my life, got the room to myself....moderation rules.

Live consciously....
I think that water cups are for water. Sometimes there is soda water available and I have taken that, but it’s not common. I do think that taking soda in a water cup is a minor form of stealing. I would not do it, and certainly wouldn’t try it on a ms. I also think that it’s not something that one is likely to be prosecuted for doing. I don’t like soda, so I like it when I don’t have to get a drink, or when I can get a lemonade or a beer instead.

I like it when threads meander unmonitored. I enjoy the conversations that come out unexpectedly.

Obviously, toilet paper should go over the top.

How you doin' out there? Ya ever seem to have one of those days
Where it just seems like everybody's gettin' on your case?
From your teacher all the way down to your best girlfriend?
Well, ya know, I used to have 'em just about all the time
But I found a way to get out of 'em
Let me tell you about it!
Sitting in the classroom, thinking it's a drag
Listening to the teacher rap, just ain't my bag
The noon bells rings, you know that's my cue
I'm gonna meet the boys on floor number two!
Smokin' in the boys' room
Smokin' in the boys' room
Now, teacher, don't you fill me up with your rules
But everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed in school
Checkin' out the halls, makin' sure the coast is clear
Lookin' in the stalls, "No, there ain't nobody here!"

Nowadays, "Smokin' In The Boys' Room" has been replaced by "Vaping in the Gender Neutral Washroom". Doesn't have the same ring to it, huh?
I suggest that toilet paper-over people are right brainers and toilet paper-under people are left brainers. Then again, I may just have too much time on my hands, and have fallen down a rabbit hole.
@FrugalCat, that just made me LOL. My 17 year old son (soon to be 18) wants a vapor thing for his bday....I can't even remember what they're called. He also has a man bun :eyeroll:

@panama18...you may really be onto something there. It's all about perception and that is guided by LB/RB....
So either I am a whole brain kind of person, or a no brainer because it just goes on however I happen to pick it up.

Based upon other people's painful experiences and their sometimes successful adaptations, it would seem that the body knows best where and how to place the toilet paper. The brain just complies as needed.

OTOH, woe to the one who forgets to point the t.p. at the hotel before an eval...

Vaping can lead to cancer. My husband's high school had an assembly for the high school kids, to talk about the dangers of vaping. The nickel and cadmium over time can cause liver and kidney cancer. These are the heating elements for the vape.

Anyway, toilet paper over the top.
