Coffee filters are closer to the size of the mask itself and would make a great inner layer.
The lady who is making these at home and dispersing them to vulnerable folks has made an insert in each one.
She's recommending a sanitary pad for the insert.
As for microwaving, if you're making them yourself and you know there's no metal, I don't see why it wouldn't work. But plain old laundry strikes me as best.

I personally don't want stuff like that anywhere near where I put my food. I'd rather just use boiling water to kill the virus and let it air dry. I like the idea of metal top border since it form fits better to the face with no gaps. I would also be afraid that the washing machine would screw it up (and again, I don't want to risk it contaminating my other washables.).
I have read that microwaving scrub pads and sponges isn't always completely effective in killing pathogens. Putting those things in the dishwasher is way more effective, according to sources I have read. So, again, not going to trust the microwave (even if there is no metal in the design).

I was just thinking that a Michael Myers type hockey mask with a filter sewn inside could keep people at a distance and also help keep viruses out.
Thank you for mentioning the three kids. How old were the kids? Were they too young to be at home alone? I wonder how easy or difficult it is for parents with young children to place their children with babysitters or relatives when practically is under a stay-at-home and shelter in place orders.

If you microwave anything to disinfect it/clean it, such as a sponge, it has to be wet first. That being said, I would not recommend it because there are so many recommendations as to how long that some may be wrong. Plain old soap and water kills the virus. Put the mask in the washer. I made mine, with a pipe cleaner as a metal piece to form around my nose, and I've washed it like 4-5 times and dried it in the dryer, and it's fine. I've seen some handmade ones who didn't back-stitch over the pleats and they don't look like they would hold up to a washer. I used flannel as my filter.

When this happens to me I just start coughing, non-stop, until they move. They usually move pretty quickly. I don't have to say a word.

I have always had a pet peeve about people standing right next to me with only a few inches between us, even more so now.
I transferred all my prescriptions to mail order, except one as the mail order doesn't have it.

I have read multiple times about families continuing to pay their babysitters during the stay at home orders. I am in Los Angeles so I assume many of these are the rich and famous or at least rich enough to able to afford to do so. My daughter worked for a family for only 5 or 6 weeks before the outbreak. She has not been there since early March. They did not offer pay at first but a few weeks later, I presume after reading stories of people paying their "staff" who are not working , they got in touch and offered to pay her.
My pet peeve...the shoppers in the grocery store who pay no attention to any social distancing rules even tho the store itself is doing everything to keep people safe except they do not go into the aisles to reinforce the rules. I think grocery stores should make the aisles all one way in alternating directions. People can bring along a red tipped stick and hold it up while looking for something in a narrow aisle and it can be a stop light for those wanting to pass.

Guy Fawkes masks are pretty creepy, LOL. But you think people will possibly recognize you if you are in the MM mask?
Albertsons has put down large red arrows and one way on the aisle floors.
I was in there early this morning and people weren't paying any attention to the arrows. But there was only 5 cars in the parking lot, so only a few people in the store.

Dang, suac. May I ask what state you live in? I personally am in Ohio. I have no idea what it's like inside of stores currently since I have been using the other services offered for several weeks. Nice that people are being careful where you live.
On my first day in a floor sign store, I completely missed the directional floor signs when I arrived. I was looking up at the aisle signs that hung from the ceiling because I needed to know where to find what I needed. I noticed the floor arrows after I obtained what I needed and was on the way to the checkout area. At least I did not pester an employee with a question that I could get the answer for by myself.

I live in Idaho.
The last time I was in Costco they had taped directional arrows through the chilled produce department. The room is always a zoo; I wish they'd make the arrows permanent.

It's likely that many of the changes made will be semi-permanent, if not completely changed forever. I don't think it's a bad thing.
JAS, when I was ordering new masks I saw a steampunk bird one with a beak that if I had an extra $35 I would totally order and wear around with pride. A hockey mask would be nice, too.

But how do you maintain social distancing and other safety measures within sports? Let me count the ways...
1. Sack the quarterback from two yards away by landing a thrown flour sack over their head. Six points!
2. Hire three hundred transpo units to move players, coaches, and cheerleaders to and from away games.
3. Convert former fan seats to locker rooms.
4. Institute automatic time outs between plays during which time players change uniforms, sanitize bodies, and take power naps. Meanwhile, fifty cleaning crew members sterilize the playing field while spaced every two yards.
5. Install 60 ft. screens to show cheerleaders working six feet apart from each other in another stadium.
And this is just for American football.....

I have heard of this but I wonder how people are supposed to breathe throught the plastic liners that pads have.
