kindle paperwhite

I got one of these and have started reading 2 books but deleted them. I am not into romance books at all. I started "Craving" and then "Girl meets billionaire"....both very boring. I wanted to read "Hunger Games" and the "Ash Princess" trilogy but they cost money. I see the unlimited has a free trail but then goes to $9.99 a month. Help... how do I get to read a good book that doesn't specialize in vampires, kissing, etc.

VERY CAREFULLY! I love my Kindle and have the unlimited membership and feel it is worth it. It sometimes takes more time to find a book I will enjoy than actually reading the books. Then you get in the trap of finding a free book that you like and at the end find out it is continued but the second one is not free. But..on the other hand, one you start using it and reading, it learns what type of books you enjoy and recommends them to you.
I am going to read my paperback of "Ash Princess" (again) until I can find something decent to read. I wouldn't have bought it if I knew it was this difficult to read on without paying more. I paid $140 for the unit.
I have Amazon Prime and I get a free Kindle book every month.

Another option is to use the Overdrive app to borrow books from your free library. I listen to audiobooks this way.

Oh Honny, you are a honey. I think I will do just that. I get a free book and many other benefits. I will give in and join. Been thinking about it for a while. I buy sooo many things from Amazon now...may as well jump in. lol smiling smiley
Since you buy a lot from Amazon, choose the later shipping option to get digital credits. They can go towards Kindle books.

Overdrive is a great app. Get your library card number online if you don't have one. Download the Overdrive app to your phone, computer or tablet. Sign up with your User ID and password, then connect your library account.

Search for books in Kindle format. Choose to borrow for 21 days and download the book. Then sync it to your Kindle.

I love the library app. Early on my son joined the library in Cal. and allowed me to access that library and I also had my local library. The a couple years later my other son signed up for the Free Library of Phil. That is a wonderful library. Nothing I like better to do than fix a cup of my favorite coffee and "browse" through the library. The app gives you options to place books on hold (if it is unavailable at the time), place on your "wish" list and borrow. They have both ebooks and Kindle books (you can download the Kindle app on to your mobile device). I also load up my MP3 player with audiobooks. I haven't bought a book in years!!!
I got Amazon prime and did get a great book to read for free (I think cuz I signed up w/prime!) and a $5 book credit valid for 30 days. I am reading "The Selection." I think after this I'll read the second one for $2.99.
I will try library app too. MANY thanks cuz I love reading (especially in bed!).
Heather, that's great! You are going to get emails from Amazon Prime. Make sure that you read them because they tell you all the benefits you get, such as the free Kindle book from Prime Reading once a month, new movies and TV shows on Prime Video, and the Deal of the Day on Amazon Shopping.

Amazon has their own studios, so their movies are 4K. I watched an excellent movie called "Love Itself." Highly recommended!

Just do a search for reading books for free. Then play around with the words still looking for something free to read. There is a lot out there a lot of it is good and a lot is crap.
I read that charging my Kindle may take 4 hours with the usb cord they sent me. I have a problem using the port on my laptop so I tried my turbo charger for the motog7 power and it charged in less than 1 hour. I red it will not harm the battery. Yay*
Once you find them, you can use Calibre to sort, read, etc. It's free.

I wouldn't buy a Kindle to read books. I use my iPad or Tablet. Too many free books via the local library. I refuse to pay for a book.
You don't need to buy a Kindle to use the Kindle app. People like the Kindle, or they use their tablets, computers or cell phones. The Kindle app is available on all devices. Amazon makes it easy for you to use it!

I bought an Amazon Fire Tablet and that came with the digital apps preinstalled. It also came with a 6 month trial of Kindle Unlimited. I haven't downloaded any books to Overdrive recently, so I don't know if the app will work with the tablet.

I love my Kindle. I just finished the first book of the Selection but decided not to read any further. I got Beach Rental by Grace Greene for free cuz I have Prime. smiling smiley
I wouldn't buy a Kindle if you paid me to buy one. I got so turned off when the eReaders were first introduced. My first eReader was a Sony eReader and books were free from the library using Overdrive. At the time, Amazon was pushing the sale of the Kindle and then charging for any books you wanted to read. Eventually they gave in and started sharing free ones. Now with the Kindle app, one can still download Kindle format books from their local library. The Free Library of Philadelphia is a great library.

I used to read every James Patterson book that he wrote. Then he started sharing the writing with other authors. As a result is books now are a hit or miss. The only series he has that doesn't seem to have suffered from that manner of writing is the Women's Murder Club series.

John Grisham was good for his first couple books and now they are not so much. I just tried to read his Camino Winds book and after getting through a third of it, I returned it to the library.

That's the other neat thing about borrowing from the library. I can return the book if I don't like it and it hasn't cost me anything.

I tend to stick to fiction. I spent about 10 years as a legal secretary and after proofreading tons of legal docs. I really don't care to read any non-fiction. Since the pandemic came into our lives I find myself leaning more towards what are known as "beach" reads with pleasant endings. And Just finished Thick as Thieves by Sandra Brown.
James Patterson has a lot of books. I read one book because I didn't know where to start. It was good, but I am not a fan.

I got a 6 month trial to Kindle Unlimited when I bought my Fire Tablet. I am taking full advantage of that before it ends in January.

Patterson's early books were the best. I used to buy every one as soon as it was published. Now I'm glad I use the library because a lot of his new books are not so good. I don't know if he is chasing the almighty dollar or as someone suggested possibly giving new authors a leg up.

I stiil can't see buying a Kindle when most of us have a tablet or iPad and can download books free from the libraries and other sources.
I had a Kindle. It felt more like a book than my laptop, phone or tablet did due to the size. Now that I am used to reading/surfing/playing on a device, my size preference doesn't matter.

I have both an iPad (smaller device) and a tablet. Using Libby I access my books on either one of them. I am finding that now that my age-related macular degeneration is starting to rear its ugly head, I am finding the larger tablet more comfortable. I worked with a girl years ago who used to tell me she had to have a real book, be able to turn the pages and feel the paper - that is, until her husband bought her a Kindle for Christmas. She said after she started using it she wouldn't let it out of her hands and loved reading with it. In her case, she and 3 other relatives all had Kindles and to save money on the books only one had a book account and all 4 knew what the password was so they could share the books. Now, of course, Prime offers one free every month and I do have it. I take my free book and have several available to read with the Kindle app on my iPad or tablet. I still; however, prefer the libraries.
You can still support libraries with your iPhone. See the Overdrive instructions above.

I used to think the same thimg about books: I needed to feel pages. I don't recall how my mind changed, maybe with audiobooks, but I haven't read an actual book for almost 10 years.

I also like the fact that I can keep hundreds of books on my Kindle.

I am very happy with it. I have found many free books to read. Now I am reading "The Bend In Redwood Road" by Danielle Stewart. smiling smiley
Two free Kindle books this month from Prime Reading.

I keep forgetting to charge whichever tablet that I am using so that I get tethered to somewhere in the house unless I drag my battery pack with me. But heck I'm old now and the outside air does not attract me like it used to.
Can't sit out front on the stoop because I yell at the kids to get off of my lawn.
I have an hour commute to work. That's mostly when I listen to audiobooks.

I started Bend in Redwood Rd by Danielle Stewart and Russian Roulette by Helena Hawthorn but didn't like either one so am looking or something again.
I saw Russian Roulette in the library. What did you not like about it?
