I learned that last Saturday both Hubby and I were in a room with someone who eventually tested positive for COVID. We immediately quarantined ourselves, and it has now been 10 days with no symptoms for either of us. On Monday we're supposed to fly out to California to see family, so our plan was to get a test today just to be sure we weren't positive. Learned that all of the chain of urgent cares we would use had reached their daily testing limit by 9:30 am. Tomorrow we will be joining a line at 6:30 to make sure we get two of those coveted tests.

I sanitize my hands regularly. I find it hard to not adjust my mask occasionally, though.

I have doubts that workers are that careful. Hard to know. I just know as a teen and college student, I worked with lots of "less than responsible" individuals in retail and hospitality jobs. I assume some may not care as much as I'd like them to and just try to do my part and get in and out of stores efficiently. I don't even go when it's super windy or in other weather conditions that make spread easier. Like a squirrel storing nuts away for later, I stocked up for the winter and probably won't have to go out much (likely will use curbside if need be).
This was interesting, by the way:
Hopefully, out-of-control cases changes behaviors for the better.

Dr. Michael Osterholm, a coronavirus advisor to President-elect Joe Biden, said a nationwide lockdown would help bring the virus under control in the U.S.

He said the government could borrow enough money to pay for a package that would cover lost income for individuals and governments during a shutdown.

“We could really watch ourselves cruising into the vaccine availability in the first and second quarter of next year while bringing back the economy long before that,” he said.
Feel like we should have done this a long time ago the right way. Use soldiers like in Australia - lol - to enforce quarantines. $10,000 fines like Germany for non-mask wearing. Bail EVERYONE out (a la Europe) during this time. Squash the virus. Disseminate the vaccine next year and be off to a brighter future.

I just got back from visiting my mom in Rockland county. They have 19833 covid-19 cases.
I got home and was tested negative.
Now I'm home and stocking up on tp and necessities!! We have 140 cases in my county!! Please be careful , wear your masks and wash hands often. I have cancelled all travel plans. Governor Cuomo knows how to take care of New Yorkers! NY Tough. Lol smiling smiley
[www.yahoo.com] Grocery store purchase limitations are back (including, ramen). Some states seem to be flirting with new "lockdown"-type ideas.
Today our county executive will announce a “safer at home” order. Staring next Tuesday, for four weeks people will only be able to leave home to go to work or school, exercise, seek medical care, or shop for goods or supplies. Bars and restaurants will be closed to inside patrons. The maximum number for any kind of gathering will be from the current 49 to 10. Occupancy limits go from 50% to 25%.

Today, I was thinking in a covid-preventive way about next year and then found myself in my druthers. If I could cherry pick my gigs, I would choose...... or at least consider.....

- tasks that do not freak out my back. a frozen back makes everything take longer, which means less money and pleasure for a given time frame.
- tasks that i enjoy, even if they stress my back a little bit (but not more than a little bit!). some of them pay so well i could do them and take a few weeks off for the three r's: reading, relaxation, and rummaging in closets in hopes of finding useful stuff or at least something that can go away and free up some space.
- tasks that match weather conditions: no roaming about outdoor spaces that are icy and slippery when it is possible to do the gigs later in the year when it is safe to walk about the various places.can you say, fair weather shopper?

Working in this way would involve fewer days in mask-mandatory world and allow me to reduce the number of PPE units I use for the year and the costs of those things. No use-y, no buy-y. This leaves money for something else. So far, I like it. But will any gigs be available, anywhere, next year?

Btw, have you considered tutoring English online? This mom makes $5,000/month doing it from home:

. . .Stevens saw a post on Facebook about teaching Chinese kids English via websites like VIPKid, which pairs English-speaking teachers with Chinese students for 25-minute classes. Teachers pick time slots at their convenience and the company provides the lesson plans. The typical pay for each class is $7 to $8.50, she says.

She signed up and started teaching within a week.

Now, five years later, Stevens is a tutor for both VIPKid and GoGoKid. She also interviews and trains new teachers for the platforms, consults, and runs a YouTube channel about her teaching endeavors. That combo effort helps her pull in $5,000 per month.

Google says it knows best times to visit places like coffee shops, pharmacies, grocery stores, restaurants and parks if you want to avoid crowds.

The data is pulled from Google Maps, which can already show you how busy a place is before you visit. It’s pretty general and will vary depending on where you live and the store or restaurant you’re planning to visit. But, here’s when Google says is the best time to visit certain places if you don’t want to be around a lot of other people:

PUA is for those who don't qualify for "regular" state unemployment insurance. It covers gig workers/independent contractors/self-employed, such as shoppers.

If you're wondering whether it is still available, I believe so - UNTIL Dec. 31, 2020. ALL COVID-related benefits expire on that date, unless there is an extension.

So, the key date is: December 31st.

One of the most disturbing things I've seen (on CNN): [www.youtube.com]

Lots of dying COVID patients in their last breath still think the virus is fake and that they must have something else. sad smiley Yes, it's real. A quarter million Americans are officially dead from it as we enter a tough winter.

The test positivity rate from the past week for these states is off-the-charts:
Idaho: 40%
Wyoming: 45%
South Dakota 58%
Iowa 51%
Missouri 23%
Alabama 25%
Pennsylvania 23%

You want to be in the low single-digits.

Looks like Dec. 26 is the last day for PUA. I was wrong. I could have sworn I read all COVID-benefits expire Dec. 31st. Maybe some expire before then and all (whatever is left) expire Dec. 31st. No matter. Here's what CNBC says about PUA and PEUC, specifically: [www.cnbc.com]
@ wrote:

Without a deal, federal funding will lapse for two key unemployment programs on Dec. 26 because of deadlines written into the CARES Act in March: The Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program, which extended unemployment benefits to gig workers and freelancers who don’t normally qualify, and the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) program, which provides an extra 13 weeks of UI to those who have exhausted their state’s benefits.
If it's like the benefit that $600 weekly benefit that expired in July, it could be that there is an expiration date of Dec 31, but to meet that deadline the effective last date is Dec 26.

In July the $600 expired on the 31st, but to meet that deadline certification had to be wrapped up the week before. People then got their $600 payment the following week, usually on their regular day--as long as the state did it by July 31st.

Maybe.

That might be it. smiling smiley I'm seeing another CNBC article saying broadly that UI is gone Dec. 31st.

A bit confusing from the different dates and b/c there are different types of pandemic-related programs: enhanced unemployment, PUA, and PEUC. People have been shifting between them as one expires...they go to the next. My understanding is that ALL COVID-related benefits expire Dec. 31st without Congressional extension. Your explanation could be right too.

eviction vs. mortgage foreclosure moratoriums are also separate:
December 31, 2020 is when eviction moratoriums expire. Thus, January 1, 2020 is when evictions can be filed. Without an extension on the ban, some estimate up to 6 million Americans could be evicted in January.

March 2021 (end), on the other hand, is when mortgage foreclosure moratoriums expire, as you're given one full year (which would be from March 2020 when COVID began) to meet your obligations. That's when foreclosures can begin.
The last reporting week of UI ends 12/26; benefits for that week, as usual, will be paid the following week, as I understand it.

Okay, so last filing date (26th) vs. last receipt of benefits date (31st) could be what they are referring to?

Either way, end of December will be key if we don't get extensions. smiling smiley
According to Yahoo Finance, new jobs have been created. Their numbers fall short of the projected figures for the time frame.

1. Woot! There are new jobs.
2. Was the projected number spot on, too low, or too ambitious (even without the covid-19 factor)?
3. The economy can still support some new jobs.

I wonder how many people are "preparing" in the covid era to switch to one of the new jobs. Who is rarin' to go? Who needs a little more time to make a change? Is anyone too scared to go? Inquiring minds want to know.

We are frustratingly and sadly out-of-control in the U.S. (Australia, for example, has 6 new cases of COVID and 28 straight days of no cases at all):
