COVID Vaccine Talk/Tracker - 0.007% of Vaccinated Americans Have Gotten COVID (7% of Those Who Did Required Hospitalization)

I had a choice of J&J or Moderna this week and went with Moderna after a relative warned me against J&J (talked about the bad doses needing to be disposed of and how hearing people working for J&J would not take their own company's version of the vaccine - not sure if these two things were related or not) . . .no idea if the recent "cluster" of "weird"/negative news is of concern or not overall....

“The vaccine does not necessarily prevent you from getting COVID. It prevents you from being hospitalized or dying from it,” Dr. Kris Bungay, a Manhattan primary care physician, told The Post. “That is why we all still have to be careful.”

“It was not common in the clinical trials for patients to be symptomatic after getting vaccinated.” Bungay added.

Moderna’s and Pfizer’s two-dose vaccines are 94% and 95% effective, respectively, at preventing new coronavirus infections, according to the Centers for Disease Control. And while it’s more convenient, the single shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine only provides 66% protection.

A coronavirus vaccine site in Georgia became the fourth US location this week to pause its administration of the Johnson & Johnson jab after concerns over possible adverse reactions, a report said.

Eight people experienced lightheadedness after getting the shot Wednesday at the Cumming Fairgrounds, though health officials believe that could have simply been caused by the hot weather, WSB-TV reported.

Nonetheless, what is important is that all 3 vaccines (Moderna, Pfizer, and J&J) 100% prevented hospitalization and death, which is probably what most people care about the most. smiling smiley
Sad thing is we may be seeing a reluctance to getting the vaccine with only one in five having received the vaccine to date. I know when I tried to sign up for an appointment I was originally signed up for October 5th, 2021. One week later I could move the appointment to virtually any time and date after 48 hrs from the time of my log on. Now the same "mega" vaccine injection site is begging for people to sign up. Some of this you can blame on regional Government's inability to orchestrate a properly run logistics operation (The Defense Department knows how to run logistics operations best...I worked with DoD govt reps as a civilian). People are getting tired of the Wuhan virus, the precautions, the protections, the overbearing Government shutdowns and want to return to a "normal" life. Thank goodness the prior administration was able to successfully speed up the vaccine creation via Operation Warp Speed. Now if only the current administration would force it's Teacher's Union supporters to get back to the classrooms so parents can get back to work and make the economy hum again with warp speed without the dithering.

@maverick1: Here, in small town America, we have an impressive little vax program. For the pop-up site, Uni, pharmacies, and oodles of qualified medical/pharmacist peeps have nailed their system. So many people at check in, so many per vax cart, and clear directions for facilities and exits. They even worked out a seating order so as to keep track of who was next and where to sanitize each newly emptied seat.

If teachers can figure out seating charts for their classes, they could declare this a transferable skill and use it to assist with logistics for the masses... and now no one will ever wonder why I never wanted to join a teacher union... just sayin'...

@Shop-et-al: I believe you missed my point. I wasn't talking about the injection site operation itself where you get the shot. That's orderly as you describe (and in my case very low on customers receiving shots count). I was speaking of the logistics of matching demand of the vaccine to the supply chain. It's a major "clerical / programming" error when you move appointments from Oct. 2021 and pull the dates into Mar 2021. That's a logistic-101 faux pas. That means demand was drastically OVER estimated.
I did not miss that point. Teachers could use their collective power to fix that situation, too.

btw, who taught those people math?

Meanwhile, a company in India is not shipping, and some 60 countries elsewhere will not receive vaccines. For my next trick, I am going to find out more about that.

UH OH...This will be J&J's first hospitalization case that I know of. I wonder if this gentleman or anyone else may have gotten "tainted" J&J vaccines by chance?

The thread title & my post above should have probably said "near 100%" prevention of hospitalization and death w/ the "Big 3," since technically there was 1 Moderna hospitalization in the past:
[twitter.com]
Dr. Dena Grayson is more accurate here vs. the NBC News' medical reporter I relied on in the video above.

Still, those are great numbers and it WOULD have been 100% if not for that 1 Moderna person (notwithstanding this latest J&J case).

This cluster of "negative" J&J news makes me wonder. . .Anything majorly inferior about J&J's vax ...was it just a very rare random hospitalization case...was it a tainted vax (one of those that maybe should have been disposed of)?
@shoptastic; Eh, statistically, that's below the noise floor. The J&J vaccine is also of a more traditional virus-based technology than the mRNA types. It's something to be watched, but not surprising in the least. Remember, all of these vaccines to date are only FDA emergency use labeled. None are FDA "approved."

Yeah, a few hospitalizations (out of 7 million J&J vaccinations given thus far) would not be statistically very significant. I was citing that news out of a nerdy interest in the science/numbers/news. smiling smiley However, the FDA is now pausing J&J's vax (announced today) out of caution after 1 person died and 6 people developed blood clots:

The Food and Drug Administration asked states on Tuesday to temporarily halt using Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine “out of an abundance of caution” after six women in the U.S. developed a rare blood-clotting disorder.

“Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare,” the FDA said in a joint statement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “COVID-19 vaccine safety is a top priority for the federal government, and we take all reports of health problems following COVID-19 vaccination very seriously.”

BOTH vaccines use the same platform: an adenovirus, a common type of virus that typically causes mild cold symptoms.

“The clots in recipients of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine have drawn heightened concern because of their unusual constellation of symptoms: blockages in major veins, often those that drain blood from the brain, combined with low platelet counts.”
Let's hope J&J's issues turn out to be very rare only. Still, one thing that could happen is a perception change of J&J from this. After AstraZ was paused and then returned to use, people were hesitant to take it. The same could happen with J&J. The "look" of the pause could lead some to avoid J&J later down the line.

Important to note that 1) these clots are VERY RARE, and 2) we should have enough of Pfizer’s and Moderna’s #CovidVaccine shots to vaccinate EVERY American by the end of May.
...also from Grayson.
The great thing about the J&J vaccine is that it can be administered in situations where getting a second appointment might be hard (homeless shelters, house visits for the home bound, etc). If the one death is indeed conclusively linked to the vaccine it is of course tragic - but one is 13 times more likely to be hit by lightning.
@shoptastic; 1) Nerds/Geeks rule! (fist bump) smiling smiley 2) The pause in J&J vaccine is for public perception / virtue signalling / political correctness. It is the equivalent of CA Gov. Newsom indicating that he is now willing to open up his state post recall passage. In other words, "science" via public image. No supporting data to stand up. The J&J vaccine, I believe, will likely be provisioned for third world countries or any area with refrigeration deficit. Furthermore, preliminary data from the National Safety Council show that as many as 42,060 people are estimated to have died in motor vehicle crashes in 2020 in the US. No one paused automobile manufacturing because of this data.

@maverick1: We're getting some new numbers in...:

(CNN)About 5,800 people who have been vaccinated against coronavirus have become infected anyway, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tells CNN.

Some became seriously ill and 74 people died, the CDC said. It said 396 -- 7% -- of those who got infected after they were vaccinated required hospitalization.

This is the CDC's first public accounting of breakthrough cases, and the agency is searching for patterns based on patient age and gender, location, type of vaccine, variants and other factors.
Not happy about the deaths. sad smiley I would still rather be vaccinated than not certainly, but was hoping we'd continue to see a "perfect" death record post-vaccination.

I do plan to still be careful even though my elderly family members are double-vaxed and I am awaiting my second dose. Even after being fully vaxed, I plan to be very careful for a while longer. I would hate to see variants/mutations emerge that totally circumvent the vaccines and/or are more deadly.

The post-vax news will be interesting/important to follow. In addition to hospitalization and death numbers, I'd be interested in seeing it broken down by vaccine type (namely, which of the "Big 3" ).
I understand. My inner perfectionist who wants this is somewhat mollified by the fact that individual differences confound things, including vaccines and other medical matters. OTOH, perhaps in due time we will know more about the major and minor differences and can prevent more deaths. ?

More new numbers:

U.S. health officials have confirmed fewer than 6,000 cases of Covid-19 in fully vaccinated Americans, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky said Monday.

That represents just 0.007% of the 84 million Americans with full protection against the virus. Despite the breakthrough infections, none of the patients have died or gotten severely ill, indicating the vaccines are working as intended, she said.
The 0 deaths/severely ill statistic seems to contradict the earlier article posted above this. Hmmm.
