Computer issues

I am running Win 7. Over the past week or so some of the Windows updates have not been installing. This weekend I had my geeky son working on my machine and it is a real Catch 22. Updates were not uniformly not installing or installing, so I had updated parts of the program conflicting with unupdated parts. Eventually we used the 'restore' function to reset the computer to its status 6 weeks ago (and had to use Safe Mode even to get that to work). We then attempted to install Service Pack 1 and still ran into issues because the machine was running Internet Explorer 8 rather than nine.

Long story short, I now have Internet Explorer 9 on the machine and the updates are updating appropriately BUT some of the single company proprietary websites are not able to deal with IE 9.

Upshot of story: You seem to get to choose between IE 8 and being able to work or IE 9 and being able to do Win 7 updates. Classic rock and a hard place. Luckily I have a Win XP desktop machine still running IE 8 so I can 'commute' between machines to check for work.

Can you use Chrome? I have no trouble with any websites when I use Chrome. Well, there may be one, but I don't recall who it was. The beauty of Chrome is, you can use extensions to synchronize your bookmarks, add-ons and other customization across whatever computers you use. For sites that require IE, you can use an extension that opens a tab in Chrome with IE running inside it.
I messed around with Chrome and thoroughly disliked it. I can't say I am thrilled with IE either. Certainly my browser of preference is Firefox and there are only two companies I deal with that ever have issues with Firefox and one of them it is only intermittent.
I was a Firefox fanatic for years, but it made me crazy at some point after an update I can't recall. It was always locking up and crashing. I tried deleting existing profiles and tweaking, but it just drove me nuts. Chrome's been smooth sailing for me. I love the omnibar. I didn't like it at all at first, but I made myself use it for a week solid and got used to it. Then I loved it.

Google's implemented something else really cool with Chrome: Shared browsing history. It's tied to your Google account, so when you login to your Google account with any Chrome browser, your history is there along with your bookmarks. That makes it so nice for revisiting sites. I just start typing in a site I visited on another PC and down pops the history in the onmibar with that site ready for me to click. I <3 Google. smiling smiley

There are a lot of aspects of Google that I find are absolutely 'right on!!!' but Chrome was not one of them. I have my old laptop awaiting a download of their operating system when it has been out for a few months, but I haven't heard anything about it in a while. The old laptop is my 'experimental machine'
I have not downloaded Internet Explorer 9; I am still on 8. Has anyone downloaded 9 without a problem.

Flash, perhaps, you could uninstall Internet Explorer 9 or use a restore point on your computer before you had the problems.
The issue was that Win 7 updates were not properly installing while IE 8 was in place. I was running into conflicts where the machine was complaining that it was working with old versions when newly install patches and updates were looking for information in patch versions that had failed due to IE 8. In order to resolve conflicts we needed to go back to a restore point about a month previous, install IE 9, add Service Pack 1 and then allow the machine to download and install all updates all over again.
That is what my son says as he buys the third battery for his MAC laptop that was purchased since I purchased my HP laptop (that is still on the original battery). He also offered to try to get his old mini-Mac running for me. It too was purchased since I purchased my HP laptop. I'm really not into 'disposables'.
At my office, one of the machines running Win7 and IE8 won't completely update Windows. I've ignored the problem, figuring that one of these days if it gets ugly, I'll have to get tech support to remote it. Sometimes, that cure is worse than the disease though. And, restore points is their absolute last resort. I've never known them to go that route. Doing nothing hasn't bitten me yet. Flash, did the conflicts interfere to a significant degree?
Mostly my machine hung every morning for more than a week as it tried to install updates that wouldn't install. I would end up crashing out and on reboot select save mode for it to clean itself up. So when I had a little time it made sense to try to figure out what was goofing up. At that point most of the diagnostics under Win 7 would not respond, including checking the computer properties to see if Service Pack 1 had ever been installed. In order to even get to the restore option the machine had to be booted into Safe Mode. So I took advantage of a geek son over for the afternoon (and free dinner at Chez Mom), to have him run diagnostics, search the web for solutions and eventually do the restore and download of IE9 and Service Pack 1. Things are running smoothly now except that I must check that one company on the other computer.
