Netbook

Does any one have any experience using open office instead of microsoft office on a netbook. Does it take up much space?

I put open office on my netbook. No problems!

From the Open Office site: [www.openoffice.org]

The current recommendation is 3GB.

The source code is ~400MB

The build requires about 3GB in total including source.

The creation of an installation set requires ~300MB.

Adding symbols to the build will add a further 5 gig approximately to the build size. Developers typically only build specific directories with full debugging for this reason using `build debug=true`

If you are concerned about space you can install open office on a usb see [portableapps.com]

or just use google apps for documents though u need internet for it.

I tried installing it and had some installation problems.I do have microsoft office 2007 on CD from my laptop, how would I install it on the netbook.
You would need a CD reader to plug into the netbook.

I'm not sure if it will install on a flash drive or not, but it might be worth a try. I'd do the custom install and only the components you will use, and just the bare bones of them. That will leave your netbook with more processor power and RAM free when you use it. There's no sense tying up system resources unnecessarily. Open Office is a great alternative.
