Shutdown?, What shutdown?

While we end our "vacation" from retirement, I'm reading that our elected officials couldn't come to an agreement. Fine. Shut it down. It won't impact our ability to hike in the national Park. We just won't get park services. No problem.

Now we can better evaluate what services are really needed. Are they worth the cost? Does the benefit make sense/cents?

When it does get resolved, there should be NO BACK PAY FOR ANYONE INCLUDING ELECTED OFFICIALS.

Not gonne happen. They found a way to staff a bill that will make it in a way to prevent them from not getting pay even when government got shutdown long ago. The only to not paying them is to not vote them into office
Elected officials don't need back pay their pay isn't being held. Oh and the TSA employees who are forced to work shouldn't be paid? All of the others considered essential -- military, FBI, etc who will go in to work despite not being paid should not be paid? Really?
Bottom line: government shutdowns may dominate headlines, create challenges for federal workers, and disrupt important services, but they have historically had minimal impact on financial markets.

Investors should continue to focus on their financial plans rather than daily events in Washington.

My bottom line? Up over 15% YTD. When is this AI bubble gonna burst? Nobody knows. But in the meantime, I'm in for a ride.
Republicans control the House, the Senate and the White House. They own this shutdown.

It's not about investors.

It's about human beings.
No. Republican do not own this shutdown. Republicans want a clean easy bill to keep government door open with a bill that only focus on keeping the government running, no string attached.

On the other hand, it is the democrats that is putting out proposals with languages and terms that would causes chaos and issues such as medication plans eligible for "legally presented immigrants".

Before you jump in and say this is right wing lies. Look at this interview from CNBC. This exact phase actually bring up by the CNBC host and Hakeem Jeffries dodge that question as usual, because they know very well that language, does indeed, covers illegal immigrants, even tho they keeps on saying that it isn't for illegal immigrants.

In the U.S., it is illegal to provide major federal welfare benefits to undocumented or "illegal" immigrants. Federal law makes undocumented immigrants unqualified to receive food stamps, Medicaid, etc.
The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act of 1996 (PRWORA) established these restrictions and created two main categories for benefits eligibility: "qualified" and "not qualified" immigrants. Undocumented immigrants fall into the "not qualified" group.

By the way, I will repeat that the Republicans control the House, the Senate and White House. They are in charge. This is on their watch.

6 min 6 sec. Somehow the link didn't work as it's supposed to. The timestamp thing for youtube no longer working.

And just in case and point. Yes it further shows that the republicans are indeed watching and making sure they are not letting the democrats getting what they want and doing what they have always done best: putting language and terms that so loose and can be "interoperated" in so many ways as how the democrats deem necessary, as in current term, phase it as "illegal immigrant" if they needed to.

If you want to argue that the law does not allow non citizen to get welfare, then why are you putting "legally presented immigrants" instead of just putting US Citizens and permanents residents(people with green cards) in the first place?

Oh that's because the immigrants who entered that US legally have also vowed that they are not allowed to apply for welfare. Ask me how I know? Because I am first gen Immigrants, my family waited 10 years with the lottery system just so I can get into this country. I had to prove that I am able to provide for myself and my family during my stay.

So no, the welfare is supposed to be for US citizen, and US citizen only, not permanent resident, not even so called "Legally presented immigrants", and definitely not illegal immigrants.

The republicans are definitely on their watch doing what they are supposed to do.

You can blame democrats all you want. But on Sept 30, there were no (zero) republicans in the house or senate to try to work out a deal. They weren't even trying, they WANTED the government to shut down.
Deal? What deal? Republicans don't need any deals, it's the Democrats who need deals, and they overplayed their hands. If they really are telling the truth as just want money for the US citizens only as the Democrats claim, all they need to do is to change the language from "legally present immigrants" to us citizens" and it could have been passed.

But no, the Democrats are so keen on putting loopholes on their bill for their need they have to leave that in.

The fault is on the Democrats. Republicans were clear on the issue with the proposal, it was the Democrats that refuse to "work out a deal". The Democrats did not even try, and now it backfires on them.
“While the government shutdown introduces a new layer of uncertainty for markets, they have historically been short-lived and, as a result, have had minimal impact on the economy,” Turnquist wrote. (Adam Turnquist, chief technical strategist at LPL Financial) “Investors have generally looked past budget-related disruptions, prioritizing corporate earnings, broader economic trends, and other key macroeconomic factors.”

Prediction markets indicate that bettors expect the shutdown to last 10 days or longer.

Myself? I'm not batting an eye.
From the news media:

"Democrats voted for a full-blown government shutdown, which has inadvertently given the Trump administration the greatest gift ever: the ability to revive DOGE-style efforts to cut waste and fraud."

Or as someone replied in the comments to the article; "Every time a democrat’s spending is reduced an angel gets its wings."
Nobody in either party is proposing to provide routine health insurance to undocumented immigrants. Democrats are mostly upset about the deep federal cuts to routine health insurance subsidized by the federal government under Medicare and Medicaid and the marketplace insurance plans more commonly known as Obamacare. The Republicans stripped Obamacare so badly of subsidies that a health insurance plan that would cost somebody $300 a month previously will now cost them $900 a month.
Having said all that, one of the smaller healthcare funding squabbles is over the unfunded mandate for hospitals to provide EMERGENCY care to all people, regardless of citizenship. There is already a federal law requiring this and for years, to compensate hospitals for providing this legally mandated care, congress has funded a special program under Medicaid that reimburses hospitals for treating patients in the ER that have no insurance or ability to pay. Trump’s administration specifically stripped out treating undocumented immigrants from the eligible reimbursement list for hospitals, but have never removed the mandate under federal law to provide emergency care to that population. ****If the federal govt is going to force hospitals to treat everyone in the ER (including undocumented immigrants) as mandated by the EMTALA law, then they need to provide reimbursement for that.

Here's a very specific question: How can the government mandate a service and not pay for it?

It's an easy answer, people, I am sure anyone here can figure it out.
The democrats are at fault. They want to fund illegal aliens. Not a good choice.
Still waiting for Mavi to have a SHRED of empathy for anyone who was not from a privileged background. You know, the ones who are defined as ‘essential workers’ who keep this country running and pay their fair share of taxes. The one’s who are willing to accept less to serve others and often get treated the worst, esp. by the current administration. The ones who are not worthy of reasonably priced health care and home ownership. The one’s who will never be able to invest any savings they have into the market or employer retirement plans, or if they do, have it stripped from them due to corporate greed. The ones who are granted temporary citizenship due to the severe labor shortage, who pay taxes and get NOTHING in return, except low wages and harassment due to their skin color - and poor English skills.

Republicans lie. They’ve been caught doing so at every turn, including the latest that illegal immigrants are getting on welfare rolls. IT’S AGAINST THE LAW. The only people who believe otherwise are the one’s who trust that anything on FOX NEWS or on TIC TOK has to be true. They lack ‘CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS (look it up kise) to be able to discern FACT FROM FICTION. Due to the fact these people are equally entitled to vote, their ignorance has led our country to a very dangerous place. It’s not the same country that non-citizens craved to be a part of, who were shown empathy in giving them the legal right to live here - whether they have command of the English language or not. Some of whom go on to open ‘cash only’ businesses to avoid paying their fair share of taxes and take full advantage of any government assistance their citizenship affords them.

Living in a state where Caucasian citizens were the minority I’ve observed these things and have heard the talk. The loopholes in the system are used as a tool to get ahead for themselves and their families and it’s all laughed at. Some may be hard working but it’s for their own benefit and they give nothing back. I’m all for fixing that problem. The republicans take these people under their wing for their votes, and through deceit convince them that they part of their affluent party, whose wealth is threatened by the very people who supported them to begin with. The ones who are the backbone of our economy and are more deserving to receive what they paid into their whole lives. The ones who have been informed about our politics for decades. The ones who, when they achieve success and financial security, turn around to lend a helping hand to the less fortunate to raise them up and make them feel that they are valued. Sorry to say that you two will never be that type of person. All you do is complain and play the victim, as if nothing is good enough for you.

You are right, we don’t need or want these types in our country. Be grateful you got in under the wire.

Start by explaining your truth in your own words instead of parroting other people’s crap to back up your smack. The Kool-Aid you drink comes from the same people who think they’re better than you and don’t give a crap about your rights or questionable legal status. They would sooner raid your home, or charge you or a family member 100K to live here.

When you have an original thought, and much better English writing composition and grammar, get back to us.

Oh booo~ The democrat party is the definition of the party of love and tolerance, the party of care and diversity, EXCEPT, when you question their believe, you are now racist, fascist and nazis. This Minime's response is the prime example of such. This person was presented a video of the truth, he/she/it/they/them/thus/thy cannot swallow the truth, and instantly turned into personal attacking mode, attacking my origin and my grammar, as a 1st gen immigrant. So much for the love and caring and tolerance and diversity party.

My empathy extends only to people who deserve it. Trust me when I say that very few democrats would feel compelled to defend you because you aren’t even true to people in the same boat as you were - illegal aliens who long for the same thing you and your family were afforded, so in that way you’re the hypocrite. Your family wasn’t able to cross the border by foot, that’s the only difference. Many FOBs enter Hawaii for extended vacations, education etc., and stay there. Then they have ‘anchor babies’ and get on welfare by way of a legal US citizen. Are you against that? I would bet my net that you are not here because your work was in high demand. That only applies to the IAs who are here on work visas. They bust their tails, or contribute to the economy and their employers due to their specialized skills. If they’re in need of health care they are just as deserving, if not more, than you are. You are no better than them, so get used to it. Becoming a part of the Republican Party won’t change that.

Yet you are wrong AGAIN

Let's look at 1994. What happened on 1994? President Bill Clinton, a president from your beloved party, has appointed someone named Barbara Jordan, a democrat from Texas to do an immigration reform. What does the reform do?

The Commission covered many facets of immigration policy, but started from the perception that the "credibility of immigration policy can be measured by a simple yardstick: people who should get in, do get in; people who should not get in, are kept out; and people who are judged deportable are required to leave".

Source: [en.wikipedia.org]

In short, until mid 1990, both Democrats and Republicans agrees that all illegal immigrants should be deported. It's actually not until recently that the democrat has changed their tone and believes that all illegal immigrants have to stay. What the changes? The minority far left extremist.

So no, the statement that you make about very few democrats would defend me is not true. In fact, this sentence is only fractionally true if you only consider far left democrats as the only democrat on you spectrum, which is pretty much the case since you guys has pretty much push all moderate democrats to the right after Charlie Kirk incident anyways.

And no, if you think I get into US easily, you are just assuming again, and that is also furthest from the truth again.

Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/04/2025 12:06AM by kisekinecro.
I’m not seeing your point. Going back to 1994 doesn’t strengthen your stance and bears no relevance to what’s going on currently. You’re generalizing about what happened back then and now. You have no proof of a ‘far left’ pushing the moderates to the right either. I don’t see that happening. They’re not divided on most issues like the GOP, and they certainly don’t support an open door immigration policy which affords them welfare and healthcare. That’s a lie.

The difference between the parties is the dems look at immigration from a perspective of do no harm and follow the existing laws. Don’t kidnap children and raid people’s homes without a warrant. Don’t ship illegals to a different country of origin with no due process. If there’s an overflow of immigrants, it is due to the culmination of both parties following existing laws, until Rump came along. The blame doesn’t fall solely on democrats. Assigning the blame to one party is ignorant and intentionally divisive.

Rump’s approach has been to flout existing laws and our Constitution, hence instilling fear. If there’s a decrease in border crossing it’s b/c we are now perceived as a lawless nation that doesn’t respect basic human rights. It’s mostly targeted against one race but that could change. Who’s going to stand up for your rights if that should happen? Your only hope would be the far left, so take a second to ponder that, as well as your obvious lack of knowledge and talking points regarding our politics. Reverting to using YouTube videos as a way to make your point is totally lame. Something that an uneducated Gen Z slacker would do. They and other dumb Rump supporters have a habit of dropping one sentence inflammatory pot shots on sites like these, then they disappear because they can’t go toe to toe with more intelligent people. They are responsible for creating the mess we are in now and are mad that they’ve been had. All of Rump’s promises have not materialized. They know they’ll suffer the consequences like the rest of us, which is where their anger stems from. None of them will ever admit fault for their poor judgement of character in voting these jokers into office. So do us all a favor and don’t vote.

In California, we do it by funneling money through NGO's or churches.
