Indeed. Legitimate companies only very, very rarely front cash for shoppers and generally it is only when you have proven yourself VERY reliable and it is for a specific job that there has been significant communication between you and the company over time. Your check is the 'classic' SCAM--an amount that is too big to ignore and a 'job' that is just too easy for the money. You will be pressured to wire transfer money--usually as one of the 'jobs'--within a couple of days of depositing the check. The check is likely on a legitimate account number at a legitimate bank, so if you call, you will find that there are funds to cover it. But the check is a forgery and if it is caught by the bank it will bounce in 10 days or so, but if it goes all the way through to the actual account owner, they will disclaim it and your account will have the amount of the check backed out plus any bank fees your bank charges. Please do not fall for this!
