MSI says you HAVE to have an EIN to get paid. Anyone shop with MSI and just use a SS#? I know they say it is easy to get a EIN...just curious if I really HAVE to? Do other companies have this requirement? TIA
> I believe the people who are still shopping them
> with an SSN were signed up before they started
> requiring the EIN.
This is true in my case. Although I notice my home page has a little yellow triangle with an exclamation point inside. Next to it, there is a warning that EIN and a W-9 are required. They always pay me for what I do. So, I’ll ignore the so called requirement at least until it becomes a hindrance to getting paid.
I'm wondering about this as well. I accepted a couple of jobs from MSI, but getting an EIN makes me nervous. If you do not receive a 1099 from them, does the IRS expect some kind of form filed? I'm considering cancelling these jobs and not working for this company, but they have several jobs in my area. I'm in Alabama. Is anyone here in Alabama that has an EIN and has it been a problem? I saw another post that warned someone to check their state before getting one because it could be an issue in the future.
First, in most cases an EIN is not a big deal and won't cause you a problem. From the standpoint of tax filing for an independent contractor the EIN make absolutely no difference.
Second, and most importantly, you are expected to file with IRS whether any company sends you a 1099. Companies are legally required to send 1099s to contractors who have earned over $599. Contractors are required to report all their income from all sources.
Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

I have never had to give either (which I don't have) or my SIN number... They did ask me for a valid form of provincial/federal ID though which is fine because they expire and numbers on them change anyway.
